Title: Before & After Bear Rug ( Michelle Nelson's Taxidermy )
Post by: Michelle_Nelson on June 17, 2009, 09:44:13 PM
Before I get to carried away this bear was a wholesale job I did for another Taxi that was behind and trying to get caught up.  This was one of the Bears he sent me.  It was already tanned and the Rug shell already in.  Needless to say about pissed my pants when I pulled this one out to work on.  :yike:

Here is a Photo of the entire Bear hide right after I rehydrated it.

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi126.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp115%2Fmichellestaxidermy%2FSANY0398.jpg&hash=50726a1607135d3e9d637eb65ed47b3098c10d04)

Front right leg and the only one that was cut correctly

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi126.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp115%2Fmichellestaxidermy%2FSANY0402.jpg&hash=47f69355022723f18470c7e7172271a26845d2aa)

This is the Front Left Leg.  The arm was skinned to high across the chest so the top of the arm is actually in the arm pit.  That is why it lays the way it does.

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi126.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp115%2Fmichellestaxidermy%2FSANY0399.jpg&hash=cf41c3a64e3b6f212b368a0b34030ff6b5bbbd52)

This is the Left Rear Leg.  I have no idea what was going through their minds when they skinned it out because the foot was being held to the hide with a 2" wide piece of hide.

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi126.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp115%2Fmichellestaxidermy%2FSANY0400.jpg&hash=af32e8d901b05be6874c63924e3ec6ef8d090a3e)

This is the Right rear leg.  Who ever skinned out the leg started their incision on the top of the foot and skinned around to the butt hole.  So the flank is actually on the bottom part of the leg.

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi126.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fp115%2Fmichellestaxidermy%2FSANY0401.jpg&hash=7651649b22cba26105b7bcab4ac0a70320f4a9bc)

Here is a picture of the Bear after all the repairs have been made and it is stretched out on the stretching table.  I got a rough measurement of 137 inches of sewing to piece this Bear back together.

Wow, beautiful work Michelle!  Looks like someone skinned their bear "all by themselves" as my kids would say...  I'll be that drives you guys nuts...
Title: RE: Before & After Bear Rug ( Michelle Nelson's Taxidermy )
Post by: Michelle_Nelson on June 18, 2009, 07:13:00 AM
  Thanks for the comments guys!

If I had to guess it was either skinned by someone that just happened to run across a Bear and had never skinned one before.  Maybe a friend was trying to tell him over the phone haw to skin it.

Yeah some times it drives us taxi's nuts to see this kinda stuff.  Especially when it is a repeat thing from the same person you have told a dozen times how to do it and they still do it wrong.  I think it bites the customer more, especially after they get the extra tack on the bill for it.  I probably put 5 - 6 full hours into piecing that thing back together.

Michelle that was a awesome job.  Very nice recovery for sure.  I watched a guy skin a bear in the same fashion one time, he wouldn't listen, so came time for him to turn it in to the taxi after tanning, they gave it back to him and said maybe a shoulder mount would be better for you, except the face was hacked also......   You got some talent for sure recreating that one....

Yep I know the kind cohoho, I get a few like this every year.  That is why I charge to make repairs like this.  Because if I do it for free their really isn't an insintive for the hunter to do it right next time.  It took almost an entire working day for me to repair this bear and get it stretched.  When it should have only taken me a couple hours to get it stretched and sew up the arm pits and bullet holes.  If I would have done the repairs for free I would have been making way less than minimum wage.

:chuckle: Patches #2 wasn't quite as bad as Patches #1.  I think I only had 1/2 the sewing.

Just don't start your back leg incision on the side of the foot, to the pecker, and to the inside of the other foot.

Start your incision on the back of the foot down the back part of the leg to the butt hole and than to the back of the foot on the oposite leg.

It's amazing what a taxidermist can fix.
I hit a bear low in the front leg and just about blew off that leg. There was just a thin piece of hide holding the leg on when I took it to the a taxidermist together rugged. The rug turned out great and you cant see the sewing. There was also a big whole fro a exit in the side behind the ribs that you cant see.

And I have never skinned anything, so perhaps Michelle, I should just come live with you for the entirety of the season and somehow put you in my pack when I go hunting...  well except when I am just out with the dogs for Grouse....  Do you do Grouse mounts?  Hope you have good cable and a BIG HDD DVR....  Or do you maybe have a red phone hotline I could call if I manage to kill something I want caped/skinned/...  ?

In seriousness though - OMFG that is a gorgeous rug.  I only put bear (& Cougar) tags on mine in case the stupidest bear/cougar on earth stumbles upon me in the woods and doesn't manage to kill and eat me.  I figure if I have to shoot a bear/cougar it means it was probably rabid for me to ever even see it AND *censored* I am taking it home with me.  In fact, that rug is so gorgeous it has me rethinking my "not hunting bear" intentions....  I, too, love the green edging.  Crap, now I want one....

I skinned my first bear out last year for my cousin because he didnt have a clue.  I've skinned most everythig else so just went on line real quick and looked at a diagram and did my best. He hasn't got the rug back yet but I'm eager to see how it looks.  Hope it turns out as good as this one.  Great Job!

I think 4 of the most common mistakes I see when people skin out a Bear for a rug are;

1.  Cutting to low or to high across the chest when they are making the incision from one front paw to the other.

2.  Cutting from the back foot through the genitil area to the other back foot.  Instead of cutting from the back of the foot to the butt hole and than to the other back foot.

3.  Starting there incisiong on the legs from the side of the foot.  Start your incisiong from the back of the foot!

4.  Removing to much skin when they remove the male parts on bears.  This takes away from the flank area on rugs.  Don't cut big circles around them like your afraid to touch them.  For a Rug cut right up through the center of them  (For guys if you have to cross your legs while doing this it might help).  If your not sure if you want to do a Life Size cut to one side as close as you can.

Sounds like you just got my bear skin back from the tannery.... :chuckle: :chuckle:

Actually, I think I only made mistake #2 and mistake #3...

I think 4 of the most common mistakes I see when people skin out a Bear for a rug are;

1.  Cutting to low or to high across the chest when they are making the incision from one front paw to the other.

2.  Cutting from the back foot through the genitil area to the other back foot.  Instead of cutting from the back of the foot to the butt hole and than to the other back foot.

Thats OK, your only having me soft tan it.  Unless you want me to charge you extra for the mistakes I would have had to fix, LMAO
