Title: Opinions on Deer Hunting in 100° weather?

Just curious on your success with super hot hunting? Next weekend is when I'm going, and it's supposed to be 100 degrees. I'm just kind of disappointed about it. 🫤

Never hunted in that kind of heat, but have always seen deer in the hottest parts of the year. Probably going to be bedded, but active towards the last bit of light. Depending on your area, I’d be looking for shaded slopes, water options and have a plan to cool the down quickly. But, doubt it will hinder your success that much.

If you think your spot holds deer now. And will hod deer two weeks from now, then go.

If the deer are there, then they are there. This isn’t the first hot hunting season .

Maybe change up your tactic. Hike up above a water source find a place in the shade and spend the day will a cold beverage and bag of inthe Shell salted peanuts. Enjoy being out there. :twocents:

It’s a grind. It’s not for the weak. But doable. Be prepared to make quick work of any meat. Deer will be most active the half hour before light till about a hour-ish after shooting light. Evenings are harder because they typically won’t move till the last 20 or so minutes of shooting light.

When I lived in the Palouse, we'd get really hot days on occasion during muzzleloader season.  Like Bone Collector 13 said, deer wouldn't move until last light. Never had a problem with meat spoilage, as we'd get the deer field dressed within 10-20 minutes, and the hide off within an hour. Hosing the skinned carcass off with cold water also probably helped cool the meat as well as clean it off.

Don't let the heat stop you, if that's when you can get away. Maybe hunt closer to water, or north-facing slopes with dense cover, etc. Good luck!

I watched 8-12 bucks this year bed in no shade the entire summer, when it was 106 those bucks were up till 7-8 am and evenings up hours before sundown. Deer are going to do their thing no matter the heat. What makes bucks not get up till late is pressure

It makes my butt sweaty, but the deer don’t seem to mind 😂

Right now with these temps the yellow jackets are about the worst I’ve ever seen. I’d be more concerned with that.

This is my experience as well,  driving home the last few nights from work the deer are up and out in the alfalfa fields or getting water by 7:00. They will be up and out there until too many people start showing up and then they will move locations to avoid you.  :dunno:

Wooden pallets under the elk.......a tarp......5-6 large bags of ice in the cavity........haul ass to the butcher.

I saw tons of deer this morning and made a few stalks. It was miserable coming up the ridges in the heat but all part it the experience. Heading back to the truck this guy trotted right to me in the wide open along a fence line. Shot him right at noon. Got him boned out and into the cooler that already had ice in it within an hour. Was 98 when we got to truck. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240902/27087b36d9ec4f4a74cc2dcdebd65caa.jpg)

Wife and I had sat through the afternoon heat, first deer showed up at 630, legal 3pt that the wife shot at and ducked the arrow, then half hour later the big 4pt came in and shot him at 25yds

Erronulvin that's a beautiful buck! Lots of little burly eyeguard trash! I love those bucks! Don't forget to post in the success thread!

Have a plan to get the meat processed and cooled down fast. Have the right tools. I believe most of the time when people complain about gamey-tasting venison, it's because the meat stayed warm too long.

Last time I was on a long hunt during the heat, I had ice chests full of ice in the shade just in case.

Used to take a small, cleaned out refrigerator with us on the desert hunts. Little generator ran it but did have to pretty much debone the meat to get in there. Couldn't hang the meat with the heat anyway and where we hunted was a long way from any where to get ice.

I have a buddy in Alaska who takes trash compactor bags with him when he does early remote hunts where he plans to stay a while. He skins and quarters his meat then seals it in the bags and either packs it in snow if there is any available or more often sinks it in a water source, either a stream or a lake, until he is ready to leave.

During hot weather I will take a small freezer along and run it after we make a kill. One of the bigger inverters connected to your truck battery will run a small freezer. But don't let it run extended time with your engine turned off, it can make your battery go dead.

All I know is ,I seen a dang nice WT on my way out of the woods last nite. Sorry no pic. As soon as I pulled my phone out he busted off .
Guarantee almost any archery hunter would of sent an arrow his way.
They still move around in the heat, that was a few hours before dark .

Critters live in the weather year round. They dont  let the weather dictate what they are going to do. They are going to do what they normally do with very few exceptions to what the weather is doing. Thats my thoughts anyhow.

We bring a large cooler and a couple bags of ice. If we knock an elk down, it’s typically opened up once tracked, quartered out, and hiked to truck/cooler. This cools meat way down and we can make multiple trips, not having to hurry. We typically get it to the butcher same day and he hangs in a cooler for a few days before processing. Seems to work great, always get great quality meat. Simple meat care is huge: air it out, get in shade, debone and get on ice. One hunt we were in a remote river canyon so I deboned a buck and stuffed heavy trash bags, zip tied them, and sunk them along the river bank that night. Meat turned out great!
