Okay I thought it would be fun to have a little contest guessing the Gross score of my moose sheds. I will need an official scorer to tell us all what spread is given for sheds, I realize it will be smaller than the actual spread would have been, but for the contest we will go by an official credit, until then go with 40". Also, if there is a scorer in the Tacoma area that could help out, I can bring them to you to score.
I will have a HuntWa hat sent to the winner, assuming I can still purchase one? Please use this thread for your entry, your first entry will be the one used so any posts with modifications will not be eligable. The information already given in the previous posts and pics is all you get. Sorry admins and mods are out, lets put a final date of midnight, June 26th. Sorry Pope, M-Ray and WF70 are out as well, I don't want anyone thinking it was rigged :chuckle:
I am going to add a HuntWa shirt in the pot as well, it will have the HuntWa Moose logo and the winner will pick which shirt on the moose page they would like.

Cool. I'll go with, hmmm, 137 6/8.
-
I need to study the pics and the score sheet...Ill get back at ya
-
Don't study too long, someone may put the score you want up before you do. For the record, if there is a tie :dunno: the winner will be the person that entered first, good luck all.

200" even ;)

You took mine!!! :bash: :bash: :bash:
I'll go with 139 7/8". I have no idea how to score a moose though.
-
I am going to go with 138 1/2 and that is a complete guess.
-
What is the "official" spread credit? I'm unfamiliar with scoring sheds.
-
200" even ;)
LMAO, now thats funny chit right there Moss. Since I know that was a joke I won't count that as your official entry, unless you really want it :chuckle:

Don't know, thats why I need one of our official scorers on this site to pipe up and let everyone know.

I'm going with a 42" spread credit and will say 138 2/8". Can I get credit for the time of this post if the spread credit changes? This is gross also. (Or can I say 96 2/8" + Spread Credit = my answer)
-
You sure can, I will add or subtract based on the 42"
-
I amended my post to kinda say that.

winging it on a moose's score is a tough one.
i don't know a 150 from a 180. most people think moose they think spread, not score i think.
a 50" bull means a lot more to me than a 150 bull.

I have a running list of entires at the top now.

I know I am not eligible but I gross it at 135 since the one paddle has a bit more length. I'd call it a 130 bull in the field. There must be some great squirrel control in that area. All my sheds are hammered the minute they hit the ground over there. I am trying to get a pic of a rodent eating on one while still on the animal. Nice finds.

Go lay one out with a tree stand over it, of course then the whole "baiting" thread will get going again ;)

the 5 that we picked up that day a couple years ago don't have a chew mark on any of them after being on the ground for 5 months or so.
:dunno:
-
The moose shed M-Ray found last year in October didn't have any chews either, it was hard white and looked as though it had been there the previous year as well. The deer shed I found close to the moose sheds is also chew free. :dunno:
-
I only went low since I am guessing you are going to get hammered for a spread credit, but I have no idea what I am doing.
Heck, with the early snow and the amount we have got these past two years the rodents didn't get a chance at them. The 8 years prior to that we didn't get much snow.

Didnt try and add anything up, but I'll go with 127 3/8.... nice bull...
-
Matching the antlers with the skull plate should be a cinch to get the right angle and spread on those. Should be able to get a very accurate measurement. Have you had a chacne to match them up? I think someone asked that earlier in your other thread maybe.

might be right on that. Would keep them from bleaching too. I've noticed that moose bleach the fastest of all the bones. Probably just becasue of surface area. It doesn't take long even for freshies.
-
Well even though I'm not eligable I'll throw out there what I thought just for fun! I have only seen the same pics as you guys (even though I'm itchen to see them ... maybe today) :) Rob knows that after his first pic was posted with just the one side of the shed I had a score of 141 assuming that the two sides were similar. After seeing the other side here's how I see it:
48+26+24+9.5+9+8+7+7.5+7= 146

Just got home from the Columbia with M-Ray, Pope and Cohoho. If you read post # 77 I did let you know it would be tonight. So I met Bow4elk yesterday so he could put the tape on the sheds. He measured each shed and then decided that a good average distance between peds was 7", so we used that. We propped one side up and he had me hold the other one opposite so he could move it to make an approximate layout and spread, obviously just a guess but he is a official scorer. He stood back, took a good look and when they were where he thought they should be he measured the spread. He came up with an approx. spread of 52". He totaled it all up and came up with a gross score of 155 2/8.
In the original post I set the contest spread at 40" and told everyone to base their scores on that. Based on the gross score we need to subtract 12" from the gross, leaving 143 2/8. Based on this the winner of the contest is dp1175
Congrats dp1175, I will find out how best to handle this and send you a PM :brew: Thanks to everone else for playing along, and a big thank you to Bow4elk for donating his time and expertise.
-
Lets see, 139 5/8 + 15 = 154 5/8 Man I wasnt far off .....well I guess If I added 12 to my origional I wasnt to bad offf anyway @ 151 5/8 :)
Greta find Rob, and congrats to the winner!!
-
Pretty impresive Charlie, based on a picture.
-
I apologize for short siding your score so much, but never in my right mind would I have imagined it was bigger than Paulas bull.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2FIMG_1344.jpg&hash=bb22038f7101a0eaac49baf225aa7bef6f0ec503)
I think my biggest flaw must have been in the spread. I never saw him alive obviously, but if he would have fit the genre of most bulls, would have been turned in moreinstead of flaring with those big swords. Most of the swords I have point mostly foward. The average distance between the 4 bulls antlers I have at my house is 6 inches, not that one inch matters, just stating that for future reference. Thats big OLD bulls to a young snapper, so that must be kind of average. Nice!
-
Man that's a gorgeous bull
-
Man that's a gorgeous bull
Thats an understatement!!!
I think the P&Y and B&C scoring method really does a disservice to moose. I'm told that longer tines means younger moose but I prefer the look of the longer tines myself.
-
correct me if i'm wrong, but the way i understand it is the length of the tines is immaterial in a moose's score, right? each tine counts as 1 point or inch, whether it is an inch long or a foot long.
phool, can you post a pic of the score sheet? it would be interesting to see...don't think i've ever seen one, plus i'd like to compare it to my sheds.
-
I will take a pic and post it tomorrow Josh. You are correct with the scoring though. The points must be longer than they are wide and each one only counts as 1", thats why I don't like their scoring method.
