Quick question, as a resident of Idaho if I want to put in for a special permit elk hunt do I need to choose that region first to put in a special permit there? I’ve never really played the special permit game in other regions. Reason I ask is I’d like to try an area in southern Idaho but really don’t want to get stuck with a general elk tag for down there when I live in a pretty decent area already up north.

No you don’t. Apply, get drawn, then you have to purchase the tag before august 1. No general tag required to apply. There is a 5 day waiting period on general capped tags after they go on sale for residents if they applied for a controlled hunt tag.

With that 5 day cap would there still be a high probability of being able to purchase a panhandle tag? Appreciate the info 🤙🏼

I don’t believe the panhandle is a capped tag but i could be wrong.

You wouldn’t have an issue buying a panhandle tag.

As a resident, you are only allowed to buy an elk tag receipt until after July 10. They don’t want everyone buying their zone tags then having to trade in for controlled hunts
