Title: Oryx or Magpul experience/reccomendations.
Post by: Blacktail Sniper on September 21, 2024, 07:46:40 PM
Looking for some feedback from anyone with experience with either or both:

MDT Oryx chassis:

https://mdttac.com/oryx-chassis-system/

Magpul Hunter:

https://magpul.com/hunter-110-stock-savage-short-action.html?mp_global_color=118

I am not happy with the blind mag on my Model 12 and would like to switch to a detachable mag style and both say they accept ACIS mags.

Between the smaller size of the .223 cartridges and my clumsly fingers, loading the blind mag currently is an exercise in frustration.

The rifle is a heavy, varmint barrel with the 4.4" bolt spacing & top bolt release, with the bi-pod and nightvision scope, it is far from a light carry, but it was not intended to be packed around a lot, so weight is really not a critical issue in this case.

Aside from the price difference, what are the advantages or disavantages of one over the other?

I have heard Oryx does a decent Black Friday sale and am in no rush to get either at the moment, so looking for folkes thoughts on which one might be the better choice.

Also regarding the MDT Black Friday sale, has anybody taken advantage of that and was the sale price worth the wait till end of November?

Thaks much!!

I put my Rem 700 in Magpul Hunter stock and got the bottom pieces for detachable mags. It made a huge difference in shooting pleasure and the cheek riser options we great for me, plus the adjustable LOP. What I don't like is having to take the cheek riser off to get the bolt out.

I have a r700 short action Oryx that came with a used rifle. Wasn't sure if I was going to be a fan of the geometry and pistol grip but I have found I much prefer it to traditional stocks. It's pretty heavy, billet aluminum - that may be a pro or con depending on your needs. You might also consider a KRG Bravo.

All that said, I am planning to sell it and swap in an XLR chassis for the weight savings.

Thanks again for the feedback.  Watched some YouTube videos on both and went with the Magpul.

Arrived late this afternoon and just finished swapping it out the factory stock.

First impression is very happy, fits well to both myself & the rifle.  Dropped right in and the barrl was fully free floated without having to some adjusting.

It is a touch heavier, as hunted (minus ammo since stock it would hold 5 rounds and I went with a 10 magazine) the rifle with the factory stock with optics & Harris Bi-pod, weighted in at 12lbs 12 ozs.

The magpul with empty magazine and same Bi-pod and optics tipped the scale at 13lbs 7ozs.

It would have been heavier had I not previously had the barrel shortend from 26" down to 20".  That probably shaved off close to a pound by itself.

It was never meant to be a pack around rifle so the small amount of extra weight, to me, is moot.

Now have to find some time to recheck or adjust zero.

Again many thanks for sharing your experiences.

I have a couple friends with magpul stocks.  I have an Oryx.  I would have recommended the Oryx.  But both are great stocks and I'm glad you are happy with your purchase.

I agree with you that loading/unloading an internal magazine is cumbersome when hunting in the dark. Especially if you are driving around between stands (repeated loading/unloading).

Looks good. Which scope are you running?

I have a Sightmark Wraith, definately starter level as far as nightvision goes.

Sighted it in with the day mode and was realitativly easy, night mode takes a little getting used to.  But for a chance to experiment in nightvision for a realaitve low cost, it is not bad.

The IR really seems to be the limiting factor and I would say maybe 75 yards give or take depending on weather conditions for good target id.

Battery life in night mode is a consistent issue from what I have read, really tends to drain it, so best to not turn it on till ready to shoot.

But it does have the ability to run off an exeterior power source so I have one that I will be trying.
