Title: He messed up
Post by: Rainier10 on September 29, 2024, 06:43:02 AM
I have had a nice 4x4 running around my place all summer. He was the biggest deer we had seen and I was hopeful one of my senior or youth guests would get him.

Of course as soon as archery season opened he went completely nocturnal. He would show up on camera at 8:30- 1030pm, 2:30 -5am and then be gone. I knew he was close and knew it was just a matter of time.

I have a disabled senior that I let hunt every year. Lots of does, spikes and two points and an occasional small three point but he was holding out for a good shot and the chance at the 4point.  Light was always fading fast when the three points were there and of course the big four wouldn’t show until after dark.

My daughter graduated with her teaching degree last year and this fall is student teaching. She is super busy so we got her the multi season tag. She ended up not making it up for archery season but did come to the cabin last night for an evening hunt, dinner and a morning hunt.

We headed out for the evening hunt and I asked her what her goal was for this year. I’m just too busy this year dad, any legal buck will work and I don’t want to cost you any money on a taxidermy bill. Sounds good.

We aren’t three minutes away from the cabin when my wife calls and says there is two bucks and three dies in the sage below our cabin.  We head that way and get on the ridge above where she had last seen them going down into the thick stuff.

As we are working our way down slowly the wind is strong in our face. This couldn’t get better. As we move along we keep seeing deer, does with fawns, so we stop and glass the sage and move on.

Finally we see three does and a small buck below us about 129 yards. As we start to get closer a doe steps out at 70 yards and we are busted. I’m glassing to see if anything is behind her. The other deer are still at 110 yards. The for doesn’t like us being there and trots back to the other deer.

As she gets to them they all start going up and to our right. That’s when the big guy steps out closer to us completely broadside quartering ever so slightly away looking down at the other deer trying to figure out what is going on. Wind is still hard in our face. I set up the sticks and say that’s him. She steadies on the sticks and squeezes the trigger on our brand new cva lrx muzzy with Nikon 1x scope. She hits him a little far back on our side but good enough because of the angle. He hunches up on the shot and walks about 15 feet slowly and lays down with his back to us.

Just keep your eyes on him while I reload. What I don’t like about this new muzzy is you have to run a patch through it after every shot. The breech comes out quick, I run the patch through and reload. He is just laying there head up.

Wind is still strong in our face which is good because we have to get closer and adjust our angle a little for a clear shot. We get to 50 yards but he has himself position just over the rise from us, she can only see 9” of his body. We move ten yards closer and she feels good about the shot. Steady on the primos three legged trigger sticks and she squeezes off the shot that finishes him.

This was the buck that we had been watching all summer, super glad he finally showed him self during daylight.

Nothing better than hunting with your kids. I said it the first time she shot a deer when she was nine, I’ve said it a lot and I’ll say it again, I don’t care if I ever harvest another animal if I can be there and watch my kids succeed at hunting that is all I need for the rest of my life.

She is super excited.

When I saw him this year that’s exactly what I thought. I couldn’t help but think of what he would be next year if he made it through the season. The problem is there are ton of other private land owners around that hunt and a ton of public land adjacent to me. I figured if one of my hunters got a chance we should take him.

Nice wide frame.  Good story and congratulations to your daughter.  PIA about the patch, definitely would.find an alternate solution.

What scope is she running and what were the thoughts compared to open sights?

It’s a new muzzy so never hunted open sights with it. Nikon buck master 1x.

Still working on load and bullets. Another member just had a thread and said weighing powder is what is needed. So we will continue to work on it.

Might end up going to a Williams peep.

nice buck and good times !! Try the Barnes T-EZ bullets super accurate and you can reload many times before having to swab the barrel

From the time we headed out after him to the time we walked up on him dead it was 52 minutes according to her social media posts. :chuckle:

It did go the way I planned it but it is really rare for things to actually go according to plan.

I could not agree more!  I haven't shot a deer since 2017 but we have put quite a few in the freezer!

Congrats on a great memory and fantastic buck!

That’s a tough one.  We were always watching hunting shows when they were little and we took them out with us as hunting and to the range as much as we could.  It probably helped that my wife hunted as well.

:yeah: We did all of those same things. I didn’t hunt until I met my wife. She said if this is going to work you are going to need to go hunting with me.

Talked to a neighbor today that had seen this buck in velvet also. He said the same thing, this guy just disappeared. I’m glad he made a mistake and my wife saw him.

@bugs n bones has been to my place and knows what an eagle eye my wife is. Always scanning with the Swarovski glass.

It all worked out great for my daughter, not so much for this buck.

Thanks for all the positive posts.
