Title: Blackhorn 209 Cleaning
Post by: Gobble Doc on October 08, 2024, 05:39:46 PM: I’m wondering roughly how many patches you might run through your bore after a few shots with 209. I typically first do a couple dry patches to remove a lot of the initial residue. Then tonight I first used Blackhorn 209
Cleaning solvent for the first time. Then used Hoppe 9
Solvent as usual. Then went to Eezox. After 30+ patches I am still getting a lot of black color. I’m starting to wonder if I’m taking off some kind of barrel coating. I’ve got. Thompson Center bone collector version. Thoughts? Keep running patches?

Thanks. I had only taken a couple shots but the guess it is possible that I hadn’t cleaned it sufficiently before.

With my gun (CVA Optima) about 5 shots is max then needs cleaned. If im target shooting and want to shoot more just wet patch and a couple dry patches.

If im cleaning to load for hunting after a shooting session . I go wet patch , brush and repeat until clean , usually 2-3 times .Then dry patches 2-3 , then bore conditioner and a couple dry patches after.

Seems to work really well . Although unless something changes with Blackhorn powder and now these cleaning products I will probably find a different avenue ,after I use up what I have . The montana xtreme cleaning products have seemed to double in price just like the powder....But thats neither here nor there ..lol

Post by: Gobble Doc on October 08, 2024, 08:19:06 PM: Thank you. After all 4 cleaners, including Windex, I am confident that the barrel is clean. I still get some discoloration on the patches but I don’t think it is from powder residue.

Post by: callturner on October 09, 2024, 06:58:28 AM: Learning from the BPCR guys I start with a couple patch's of 10-1 Napa cutting oil and distilled water. Then I use the Windex on several patch's till clean, Then a couple dry patch's. No big deal in my Accura or Knight Bighorn. Works for Blackhorn or Pyrodex. Fire a couple of caps or primers and there ready to hunt.

A couple wet patches then a couple dry patches and everything was done and clean. With this Thompson Center with Blackhorn powder it seems like it never gets all the way clean. The barrel inside looks like a mirror but the patches continue to have color. I really do think the solvent is removing some kind of the barrel coating or something.

For myself and over the years I have created my "Easy Bore Cleaning" and best of all it works
