Title: What do elk like for treats
Post by: Goshawk on October 26, 2024, 02:29:59 PM
Over the years I've tried several items like wet COB to see if Elk will eat from a feeder. I've always struck out except for apples.  Does anyone know what an elk would come back to eat in a feeder in Western Washington?

Knew a person who lived in Idaho and he said that alfalfa and black strap.

Corn
Corn? Haven't tried that. Whole, cracked,  or they don't care? Sorry couldn't help myself there.

Apples by far #1

Whole corn if you can get them to eat it. Some love it, some won't bother.

I've also tried alfalfa cubes and they let them sit and rot.

Whole kernel.  Cracked will probably work as well, I've never tried it.

On my place I had in North Bend they preferred pears over apples but loved them both

I've tried both. I have never had a blacktail deer or elk eat cracked corn.

Dried garbanzo beans

Tried those last year at my place and my buddies place. The elk around here let them turn to mush and never touched them. These west side elk are picky.

Apples and more apples.  We make apple cider every year, and I take all the pulp down the hill, usually about three tractor buckets full.  It's all gone in a few days.  A few years back, I dumped a load of carrots down at the bottom of my property, the herd came by a couple days later and ate them all.

They like young apple trees a little too much.

pretty sure they like candy corn and the little Snickers and KitKat bars we'll be handing out on Thursday evening. Worth a try.  :dunno:

I've used apple flavored whole kernel corn in the past and the deer love it.  Never tried it on elk. Get it at Tractor Supply.

Apples for deer and elk.  I didn't have trouble finding bins of apples available, after I ran out of yard apples.
