Drop some doe in rut pee down.
They'll be rutting in no time . :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

A gallon or two should get them worked up ...real quick. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

I drove through Heyburn state park next to my house couple days ago and a smaller 4pt WT was tailing a group of does. Besides that all the bucks I’ve seen this weekend, around a dozen, have been loaners still. I hunt mostly unit 5 & 6.

Seems like a good plan to go with the timeline.
Washington timeline is to rut hard day after rifle closed. Lol.

Last weekend I saw a good 4pt (8pt) whitetail who STUNK chasing does in my neighborhood, near Kidd Island Bay, CdA.  Should be getting some snow up there.

I'm headed back to N Idaho on the 21st for 4-5 days.  I really miss the forests and woodlands there in E WA and N Idaho!  I just took a 2x2 blacktail here in W OR's general season, so I have some game in the freezer.  I might "hold out" for a slightly older whitetail buck this year.

Went out again tonight. Fresh snow outside St. Maries and zero rutting activity. Last year the 8th was the light switch here.

No rutting activity, but the last three days I've suddenly got all kinds of bucks showing up on my cameras.  They seem to be coming out of the woodwork all of the sudden.

That’s great to hear! Went out again tonight. Saw couple small bucks alone and around 20 doe with no bucks around them. Still doesn’t feel like it’s kicked in here.

None of the bucks in my area seem to be rutting (Just South of Sandpoint).

I think it was still a couple weeks out from now last year.

Saw 3 bucks last night, one with 5 doe out in a clearcut and the other nose down trotting along the edge of a field. Both smaller 4pta. 3rd buck was still by himself in timber.

With that said saw around 30 other deer and no activity with them.

It certainly seems like the last couple days of late modern the younger bucks are starting to get stupid. November 17 and 18 of 2021 and 2022 I killed two 3.5 ish yr olds with no neck swelling and they weren’t stinking at all. Last year I shot a same age class buck in Unit 1 on the 17th running with a forky, same story. They were however moving during the day. Seems like a lot of mature bucks get killed in late archery up there!

Saw 12 bucks between leaving one of the restaurants and the start of my driveway tonight, got a few texts from people that said there was a really nice buck hanging out in my yard today and seen him trying to run a basket buck off when I came in tonight.

They’re definitely in the dumb phase right now, especially with the break in rain and the bright moon.

Just got to the hunting grounds today (NE corner) and checked trail cams.  Young bucks are cruising (but nocturnal)….usually a sign the rut is 3-5 days out.   No big bucks spotted, which is also what I’m used to seeing pre rut.  The big boys just show up one day when the does go into heat.

I was set up on a tilled wheat field just out of timber two days ago and had a doe, yearling doe and fawn come by. 30 minutes later here came a good buck nose to the ground right where they came by. Fatal mistake for him.  Not a monster but a good buck.  Was not seeing any scrapes 5 days before that and all of a sudden they were everywhere.  Think it is a tad late IMO

I’ve seen at least two or three good shooter buck a day for the last three days. Messed up on one and couldn’t make it happen on the others. Saw one tonight in the 170-180” range, tried to get my buddy on it when I should’ve taken the shot. The world changed overnight 😎

Pre-rut definitely
Or what I said yesterday....lol
There just cruzin, establishing territory, pecking order.
Not necessarily with the doe,but not too far off.
Scraping trees and pretending,that stuff.

Actually working on getting my nephew his first buck / deer ever.  He got a bear earlier this year for his first big game animal.  We have through the weekend to get it done....then I get to hunt the last couple days when they go back to school.

NE got snow and sub freezing weather the last 2 days.  Just saw a doe in estrus and a young buck following her with his nose in the air and lips curled.   Hoping this is the start of a good couple days.  If not…..I probably should have shot that little bugger.   :chuckle:  He actually had a decent sized body on him.

Unit 5 has been DEAD. Seeing way less deer than normal.  One in our group did get an ok buck, but other than that it's been slim picking compared to the last 7 years.  Not even seeing does in the usual spots.  It snowed last night and we're fairly certain we found wolf tracks today.  Not saying that's the reason for it being slow, but we haven't seen their tracks in the past here.

Sheesh! I don't have a quad and I'm having trouble finding public drive in access points.  I did move to a different spot today for a bit, but still only 1 doe there.  Never had a reason to hunt elsewhere til now lol.

I saw a group of does yesterday,  figured a buck would show, no such luck. This morning was a different story, told my wife I shot the first deer I could since she is sick and I missed the wind storm from hell and need to go back to repair. Took a spike, but let me tell you it’s about as cool as a spike can be.

Absolutely nothing on my cameras but does and small bucks for the last 3 weeks.  Prior to that, had lots of decent bucks on camera.  Fast forward to the 20th......that's right, the day after the season closed....Two of the bigger bucks show up on camera.   :bash: :bash: :bash: :chuckle:

I could have filled my tag a couple days with a 2x3 and a spike I named "Wrecking Ball".  Wrecking Ball would have scored in at a might 6" (1.5" symmetric spikes with an approx. 3" inside spread.   :chuckle: :chuckle:  He was all kinds of horny and would run into the middle of 5-10 does and it would look like a bomb went off.....does running every which direction.   :chuckle: :chuckle:  I imagine all us guys acted like him at one point in our life....and got the same response.   :chuckle:

With full freezers, I had told myself I wouldn't shoot a buck unless it was a nice one.  I still have archery season if I really want to get after it.  My experience is the Archery season is the time to be in the stand anyway.  Now that the bucks are showing on my cams, they will be visible for the next month, all hours of the day.  Decisions, decisions....

I don’t know WT well enough to have a good time frame, but I think this time of year you just have to find the right pocket. A doe will be hot somewhere, and it will be popping there. This is where having multiple people hunting and looking probably helps tremendously. Unfortunately if your solo, that could consume a ton of time. I didn’t see any rutting behavior where I was, but for all I know it was hot a mile away. Based on others reports they were rutting near where I was.

Saw a buck running around like an idiot today while driving to a restaurant.   Plus a newcomer on the property yesterday mid-day.  Even our resident Spike seems to be getting worked up.  Looks to be heating up around here
Seems to always be a litttle later up north

Saw 26 does today and only 2 bucks.  Both were cruising but in the opposite direction of the does that were within 150 yards of each of them. :dunno:

The weather has been pretty bad with rain and fog, and the deer haven’t been moving much were I’ve been at. I turned this guy up yesterday morning he was chasing does  but it was a pretty slow week for our camp.

Don't make eye contact, stay very still.
That's what we did ,they will still bust ya eventually.
May give you enough time to draw and shoot.
Any doe that come to the rattle ,try not to spook them, very still-no eye contact, let them pass. Wait for biggin.
Good luck out there, seen a few since modern closed.

I've never had an issue with eye contact. I don't take my eyes off them so I can position for a shot when they put their head down. Noise is what usually gets me busted.

I do believe the rut is ON.
I've gotten a few trail cam pics of bucks actively following doe.
Most of these pics occurred at night.
Night or day ,seems like it's on for sure.

Good luck out there.👍

November 25 was a good day!  I had a hunting "apprentice" out with me, same one as last year, and she was so pumped to get out, rattle, sit, spot and stalk, use different tactics, etc. and above all, see deer!   Next year she'll have a rifle in her hands.

Long story short: squirrelly winds disrupted our "sit and rattle" plan for the afternoon hunt, so we headed cross-country to get out of the fickle canyon bottom breezes.  We hunted through some old timber harvest units, glassing as we went. As we crested a ridge, we heard two bucks grunting at each other in an open timbered draw across from us.  There they were- two bucks having a significant difference of opinion over the two does with them.  I was tempted to let the bucks fight, but I had a good 110 yard shot at the slightly larger of them.  I eased slowly into a seated position, got the buck in my scope, and let the bullet go.  He dropped in his tracks, and my student and I glassed him hard to make sure he was down.  Then it was celebration mode, and the work that comes with success.  We had one of my great lifelong mentors along on this hunt, and he hiked up from the creek valley to help as well.

I thought I'd include a photo of a great gray owl I walked by the prior day while hunting alone.  The peaceful and wise aura of the owl gave me a sense of calm and hope.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all.

Here's the great gray owl.  Couldn't load the post with both images, for some reason.
