There’s a new trapper trying to trap it but didn’t have success last winter. The previous guy who was quite successful lives out East now.

You have a sled? Unit 6-9 are great spots, especially once the snow keeps them close to the logging roads.

Post by: bearpaw on November 02, 2024, 07:27:26 AM: I think going deep on a 4-stroke snow machine that runs quiet is your best chance at a wolf, go to any backcountry unit that has some road access to get in with the snow machine. More southern units will offer more open slopes for spotting, and that is an extra advantage. Call and ask an Idaho biologist for the region you decide on!

If you are asking about Panhandle units, all those units have wolves, plenty of wolves, especially in the more remote areas.

Unit 10 was full of wolves back in 2018 last time i was in ID hunting. We never connected with one, but we saw a few and we heard them every single evening.

Post by: Naches Sportsman on November 05, 2024, 10:39:25 PM: I did cut wolf tracks on Sunday morning where Redi and his wife got the wolves a couple falls ago.

Saw 11 this hunting season on the border of 7/10. Saw tracks near the border of 9/10 last week. Saw tracks in 10A near 10 Thursday. The IDFG jet A trailer isn’t out there yet. Didn’t check it last year to see how much they ended up flying.

Unit 12 is another good option in the winter for people that don’t have means to travel over snow. Spent a month this past winter up on the eastern half of the unit doing surveys and cut wolf tracks everyday not too far from the highway.

Even going on a back pack trip up the Selway in the winter isn’t a bad option as I always find wolf crap along the river out of race creek when the snow melts.

Post by: DeerThug on December 01, 2024, 06:11:32 PM: I saw one yesterday morning just west of Farmington while pheasant hunting. Big black one kicked up out of crp, trotted up through the winter wheat, skylined broad side ~ 300 yards ish for some time. Locals are seeing 3-4 a year in this area.

Not an area that if you are targeting wolves that I would recommend. All of the sightings are singles not the packs to target. You could spend a ton of time around there and never see one and not get a shot at it. Only an secondary wolf area. But they are there and a predator call might work

Post by: Naches Sportsman on December 29, 2024, 09:25:21 PM: So far, fairly similar to last winter (minus more rain this year) over here in the lower elevations and making it tough to pattern a pack. There’s still elk hanging out at 4K plus and not a great snow pack below 5k yet. It’s nice being able to drive places, but at the same time wish it would snow more to get the elk grouped up into bigger herds and wolves coming down!

Couple screenshots from one of my cams. These wolves Den between 4500 and 5000 and no reason for them to go down this far yet really.

Post by: Naches Sportsman on January 27, 2025, 06:42:15 PM: Got winded by a pack yesterday afternoon and they sounded less than 1000 yards from where I was posted at in heavy timber. It’s been a tough January with very little fresh snow except for the first week of the month. Here, there’s still elk very spread out up to 3500 feet above the valleys still. Cameras been showing wolves running roads between 10 and noon during daylight the last few weeks.

extreme luck too! Once you get one go buy your lottery ticket. I live in Idaho (unit 5/6) and spend quite a bit of time outdoors and I haven't seen one in 4 years.

Definitely extreme luck and a lot of commitment. Good way to stay/get in shape though!

I see 95% of the wolves on USFS, Army Corps or IDL land and the other 5% on potlatch. Been out 14 days this month both playing and working dawn till dusk and have yet to lay eyes on one. Hopefully trump administration can find a way to reverse the lawsuit to bring back full trapping season.

:yeah: Unfortunately, I think Congrees has to pass legislation to overrule that judge's decision or the USFWS has to take action certain species listings? Either of which will take time!
