Had my Silverado start displaying a “service 4WD” icon display on my dash board. My 4WD will engage sometimes still when I turn the knob but it’s a 50/50 chance.
I heard that it could be a ground wire issue under the drivers side? Figured I’d get some input before having to take it into the shop. Any input would be great. Thanks

It could be a grounding issue. If you can, follow the wires that come out of the shift motor & look for chafing points around clamps & here they go through the firewall & whatever else. I have a 2004 & it’s becoming a common issue for the electric shift motor itself to go bad. This weekend I couldn’t use 4 low when I wanted it & I just had the shift motor replaced at the chevy shop 15 months ago.

Love this guys Youtube channel. Maybe this is your problem. Stuck transfer case motor.

Earlier models its usually the dash switch for 4wd

Not sure same issue but had this happen to us in Montana on older model, maybe 2005 and heard of it happening to others also. Wouldnt shift into 4x4. The transfer case gets a hole worn from the inside and won’t go into 4x4. Could have been cured by 2016 if it was a known problem?

I replaced a simple sensor on my trans case. 2006 1/2 ton Chevy. It solved the problem. The part cost about $20.

Thanks for all the replies. I’m wondering if I plugged in a code reader if it would let me know more of what may be the issue.

That is probably a good idea.

Mine is 95 ,so probably pointless saying what my problem was.
It would only go in about half the time, then wouldn't go in at all.
Long story short.
Had to tear the passenger side axel out,in differential.
There was a slide gear in there. A gear that slides over when you hit 4 wheel. Ended up replacing some washers, seal, lock key.
Then it was still not going in all the time. Found a broken wire on that sensor,on transfer case.

When the chain wears a hole through the oil all leaks out and then you sell the truck for $5k and walk away. Don't ask me how i know....

Pretty easy to install a pump rub kit to prevent this. It's not from a chain though.
If you start seeing oil spots on your rear bumper or tailgate you better start looking at the transfer case.
