My 81 year old father found this coast blacktail shed this spring while looking for mushrooms near where I grew up. Keep in mind that this shed was found about 25 or 30 miles from the Pacific Ocean. It was on the west side of the coast range. So there is no chance of this being a hybrid Muley blacktail. I grew up in this area and have seen and killed a lot of bucks. I’ve seen a few that would match this guys spread and height, but none that would come close to its mass. The pictures have a standard 12” ruler next to it to give some scale. After my father described where he found the shed I knew exactly where he was. I went up there and spent about half a day looking for the other side. The area this ole’ boy is in dark timber with very few openings. It has fairly dense brush too, aside from the game trails. I have seen elk in there quite a few times but very few deer. Probably explains why he was able to get to this point in antler growth as it would be a difficult area to hunt. I plan on making another trip back to my folk’s home in the near future to continue the search for the other side. I have not measured it out yet, but plan to once I can spend the time to do it properly. I hope to be able to come up with an approximate score that his buck might get if I estimate the other side a similar size and use one of my mounts at the house to figure something close to his spread.

Holly crap

Now THAT is a "Big ol' goodun". Find the match! My cutting partner found one that was big and heavy one time when we were falling a unit out South of Aberdeen, but it wasn't nearly as big as your! Wow.
How was the mushroom picking out there this season?
-
awesome blacky
-
THAT A RIPPER!! LOVE THE MASS
-
Oh my god. . . . That is my dream buck. Exactly why I can't bring myself to change my residency to Idaho while I'm in school over here. Have to get back home and hunt the blacktail!
-
thats a hellofa find.
-
thats a great shed, u better be huntin that buck this fall
-
Are you sure that is a standard 12" ruler? that shed is a monster for a blacktail! WOW. That thing would be impressive on a mule deer.
-
Now thats a buck!
-
Wow thats a really nice BT :o
-
very nice

I did not get out for mushrooms this year. That thing called work got in the way. My father got some Morels. He didn't say much about them so I gather it wasn't too exceptional this year for him. I'll be on the Chantrelles this fall though!
To answer the other question, yes that is a standard 12" ruler. I can take another picture with something else for scale if you like. The pictures really don't do this antler justice. When your holding it, the mass is just really exceptional with this one.
This just shows that there are exceptionally large blacktail out there. The big ones are just real hard to find.

All I can say is WOW. Awesome find
-
Man that's a freaking TOAD!
-
wow! what a pig.
-
wohh that is a nice one!! :yike:
-
Wow!! If you want to enter it in the state book, let me know. I'd hate to see a WA blacktail like that go unrecognized.

That's a monster blacktail! Wow
-
Go kill him and show us what his face looks like
-
Measure that thing man, it will only take a minute :chuckle: Awesome shed man!!
-
To all that have been asking me to put a measurement on this shed. I took a shot at it using the B&C guide as to how and where to measure. Please understand that this is the first time I've ever measured an antler in an attempt to score it. So, consider this a real "rough" measurement. Until, I have it measured by someone who really knows what they are doing (not me) we will not have a definitive answer. Since, Charlie (bucklucky) had been the last to ask me to measure this, I asked him to look over my measurements and see what he thought. With the measurements I provided him on this antler, his response is that assuming you double the typical frame and add in a 16" inside spread this looks to be a 170 class blacktail...
-
Where did you say you found it???? :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
 holy c@*^ that is the biggest blacktail shed I've ever seen! I would imagine that deer to be in the thickest crap possible. What amazing genetics!!!
-
Ya it is a MONSTER blacktail for sure. I just wonder what the other side looked like. If you find the other side I can find a cape and mount that badboy up for ya!! ;) ;) Or you could sell them to me  Thanks for taking the time to measure it out, thats very impresive.
-
Whats all the fuss about its just a little bone :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
I think in need your dad up around my stomping grounds to help me out!
-
:o
-
Lets see some more pics of that monster from a different angle.
-
Sure, as requested byrdman, here are the only other two angles I can come up with. If you have another you want, let me know what it is. Excuse the prop used in the one picture. It's the only way I could get the antler at that angle.
-
:o WOW! Its thicker at the top than at the base!
-
That is a monster blackie
-
what a toad of a blacktail wow
-

Great find! COOL antler!
I do need to arrange a meeting with bow4elk so I can have it officially measured. It came from a true hog of a buck. I will post the official numbers once I have them. It should make the book...
-
It should make the book...
Uh Yeah!

That thing is so tiny i wouldn't even pick it up.
THAT THING IS HUGE HOLY !@#$ Nice find
-
WOW, you need to find that other side and put it on a mount.
-
It should make the book...
Uh Yeah!
How to prove it's all black :dunno: Might be a dumb question :dunno:
-

Not sure how to prove other than the finder's word. There's a whole record book full of sheds. Wonder how they proved those? This one was found within 20 miles of the ocean. No question to me it was pure blacktail.
-
DNA testing.. Hell of a shed.... Get that thing scored!!!
-
Giant blacktail!! offical score?????
-
this post is 3 yrs old :dunno: are we that bored :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle:

LOL! I guess they are bored. After bird season is over I hope to arrange to meet up with bow4elk and get a official measurement done.
It is still here and still very impressive...
