Oak creek has quite a few elk already and some really nice bulls. No huge ones, but some really nice ones. I expected this to be a big year there with that fire this year. If you are loking for some entertainment and happen to be in the neighborhood.

I heard there were some really nice ones shot before the gates were closed. Some good looking bulls up there currently though!

Great pics! Never get tired of looking at big antlers and animal behaviour.
As a kind of unstated going away gift a few months before he married, my younger son invited me on a winter safari to glass game on the wintering grounds, and Oak Creek was on the itinerary. Fabulous. For a few long days we glassed deer, elk, coyotes and sheep in WA and Idaho and made never forgotten memories.
Merry Christmas!

Love all of the pics. I have a few days off next week and would like to bring Suzyque over for a little road trip. Any recommendations on a comfortable place to spend the night in Natchez or the general area?
Also, breakfast and dinner recommendations please!
-
Awesome pictures. Thank you.

THank you. Holy smokes HntFsh I have no idea. Are you thinking Hotel or camping?

Little bit of a drive to Yakima, but the holiday inn, in Union gap is very nice! You could also check into staying at whistlin Jack lodge in one of their little cabin rentals.
-
If money isnt tight, I'd probably recommend Reds Flyshop, canyon lodge on the river between Rburg and Selah, or Whistlin" Jacks. Food is good at both and both would be a nice experience. If more into hotel, the one in Selah is okay. A bit thin walled but clean and safe. I have no idea about Yakima lodging. @jackelope may have stayed at Reds.

I’d look at the cabins before you sign up for that. We rented one at whistling jacks and it was a dump. That was 2018 so maybe they’ve cleaned it up.
Attached a pic of the hot tub. Doubt you’d want to have a nice romantic evening in the algae!

I know they have new owners so hopefully they have made it nice again

I've been to Red's a bunch and have stayed there a couple times. It's a great place. My favorite part is the food. Get a table, Order your dinner, get your drink and go wander around the fly shop while you're waiting for dinner. I haven't stayed there since Ron and Bobbi left to Wyoming. The accommodations are super nice. It's been a few years and I don't know what the rates are now. It wasn't super expensive but it wasn't cheap either. LAst time I was there for lunch with my daughter while we were touring CWU and it was corked full of people at lunch time, so I'd probably recommend reservations.

We use to stay at "Jacks" allot years ago. Last time was in 2017. Here's what the same hot tube looked like then at the same cabin (Grandview cabin). When we arrived I inspected the cabin and found EVERY smoke detector in the cabin.... with NO batteries installed. The ele. outlet for the microwave did not even have a face plate!!!!! Notified the front desk, nothing... Prices had increased crazily.... never went back...

There are some nice little VRBO places to stay on 410. Private message me. Paul
-
I think the Trout Lodge in Rimrock Retreat has a small 3 or 4 room motel across the street from the Restaurant.
Good food as well, but only open certain hours/days a week.
-
Vrbo like someone said on 410 by jacks to elk lodge. We stay at elk lodge during the late season, they have small cabins and one big log cabin.

Very cool!
Awesome picture!

Oh my, great picture Bone.
The stance is great but then you have the color contrast in the elks hide and rack.
By the way, does anybody else besides me like seeing Bone posting pictures more often again?
-
For Sure! Thanks Bone. I just went by there and there were a ton of elk. I wonder if that last storm brought a bunch more in.
-
That was fun, thanks Bone!!!!
-
Typical Yakima elk....they all got weak 3rds... :chuckle:

I need boneaddict to be my mentor for taking great wildlife pictures!

So ... having never been to Oak Creek before .... is it open all year? When is the best time of year to visit? What days of the week are best? Same goes for time of day?
Also, are there any other sites in Washington similar to this?
-
The lot is open all year dawn to dusk. I’m sure the visitor center has hours. The elk come in depending on the weather, but usually going good by Christmas. This year was earlier because of the fire. The more it snows, the more that come. Weekends are busier than weekdays, but that is lesser now since no one seems to work. Truck tours out in the lot start about 11 I think or what I have seen, every half hour or so. They feed at 130. Elk get Andy and start moving down about an hour before. Actually when they start their first tour truck, gets their attention. There used to be other lots, but some were closed due to natives shooting them in the lot, and this year I was surprised to see Joe Watt closed
-
They also have another feeding station 1/2 mile north of the Hwy 410 / Hwy 12 split on the old Naches Hwy where they feed. That station has a large flock of sheep as well as a few elk
-
Why is Joe Watt Closed? Shooting elk?
-
As for sheep I was told they weren’t doing that one this year because of exposure to the pneumonia. I didn’t confirm.
-
Why is Joe Watt Closed? Shooting elk?
It closes in December. Has been that way for quite some time. They still feed there, but you have to view from the fence. Elk feed up the canyon. Need binos to get a good view of them. Elk not right at the fence like Oak Creek
-
I was there day before yesterday. They weren’t feeding yet :dunno:

Thank You
