Set my first camera out last week. I put it out in a spot where I have dumped 45 beaver along with other critters in the last year. I was hoping to get at least one of the bears that's coming in along with some of the yoties and maybe a bobby. I guess I needed to format the card on the camera before I left it, as it only took 40 pics over a two day period, and then stopped???????? :dunno:. I had a 2MB card in it with only 42kb used up. It should have taken a tone more images. ( Stealth 540IR)
I got this vulture that came in about an hour and a half after I set up. It or another came back again the next morning, and that was it. There is a 44 lb beaver wired to the tree in the middle of the shot. When I went in yesterday, the beaver was long gone and the double wrap of bailing wire was busted. I found fresh bear scat on an adjoining trail. I was not happy when I found out my camera didn't get any of if. :bash:
I re-baited with PB and some old canned goods that needed to go. I also added a second camera on the trail that I think the bear(s) are coming in and out on. I will check them later this week and see what I get.
The last pic is a pile of :crap: (with my SAK for reference) from last year at the same spot. I saw that big boy one evening while dropping off protein supplements ;). I dropped 100 lbs off that evening. It was all gone the next morning.
-
Both cams worked!!! :IBCOOL:
Just caught a bear on the approach trail...
-
And a yote at the bait station. Had about 40 pics of the doggy...
-
Cover up the beaver with some logs and sticks and the birds and yotes will leave it alone. Only a bear will be able to move the logs. Also maybe switch to a faster trigger speed. Sum camera's will only take a pic every three minutes where a faster trigger speed setting will take multiple pics, one right after another. The only down fall to the trigger speed is poor battery life. A 44lb beaver, wow didn't think they got that big, crazy.
-
You do realize that is a crime scene...looks to me like that beaver committed suicide. :chuckle: Thanksa for sharing the photos. You trapping the beaver on a nusiance permit, if so would love to see some of you before and after photos on your sets.
-
that would kind of freak me out seeing a beaver out in the woods like that at first. Glad to hear you got it working good. Cool pics~
-
Nice nice ;)Mark
-
How high was your camera set? looks like Pooh Bear walked under it..
You do realize that is a crime scene...looks to me like that beaver committed suicide. :chuckle:
:yeah: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
:hello:
Trigger speed - I have the cams set to take five and then sleep for 1 minute. I was having trouble posting a whole series, but have figured out how to reduce file size now, so here you go -
Beaver size - I weigh all of them that I catch for my personal records - I have gotten them up to 59 lbs here in Washington ( since I started keeping track about 3 years and over 100 beaver ago). My dad had caught them up to #110 lbs back in the mid west. The fur dealer he sold to gave an extra $20 for the biggest of the year. The year before he had caught one that was #105, but lost out to one that was #120....... :yike:
Nuisance Trapper - Yes, I'm a state certified NWCO ( Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator). I pretty much focus on Beaver in Snohomish County. In the last year I've caught almost 50 beaver for various clients. It's amazing how little water those buggers need to do a lot of damage. My trapping is only limited by how many phone calls I get and by how much spare time I have after work - year around. I keep my traps in until all the animals are taken or until the client wants to stop spending $$$. It generally takes me about 2 weeks to totally clear them out, but I just finished a farm that it took me a year to catch one animal - that was the one in the pic - it went to living in tunnels in very marshy area or would just leave entirely. I finally got him in the end though..... :chuckle: The next job I do, I will try to take before and after shots of water levels and of sets. Right now, I don't have anything lined up. I use killer' traps exclusively as of right now.
Trail Camera Height - I've got them set about 5 ft off the ground. That bear was supposed to go up the incline to the right.. :dunno: I guess I forgot to tell him that. I wanted them up higher to try to minimize critters chewing on them. The one at the bait site is tilted downward slightly to get that shot.
-
I set mine at waist height...but then again I will probably go check it tonight and find that it got eaten (now that I opened my big mouth...)... :chuckle:
-
Why don't you skin those beavers. They make nice pelts.
-
The fur is not any good this time of year - best from December into February.
Fur prices are in the crapper - that one may have brought $10 if caught during the winter. :bash: There's a lot of work in taking care of the hide to get it to the point to get that $10 out of it. Tanning hides is an option - again when fur is prime in the winter. Getting them tanned can add up to a bunch of $$$ in a hurry. It still makes me ill to just pitch them but it comes down to time and money unfortunately. Skinning, scraping, stretching, drying, and the shipping that would be required are not worth the time away from my family and other endeavors at this point.
I've got another one "cooking" at the bait station right now. I'll get some pics up from the last couple of weeks and post some pics of the short line I've got out right now for beaver. :hello:
-
I generally catch about 20-25 beaver a year. I try and get my clients to wait until the fur is prime, but most of the time they just want them gone. Caught 2 coons and 2 skunks last week, it was a slow spring for me.
-
Couple of does, one was big time prego, the other a yearling. They don't seem to be bothered by all the other scents that are at the bait site.
Couple of bears too. Pretty sure that these are two different bears. What do you all think. :dunno: Guess on size?
I also have some pics of my latest short beaver line ( 5 traps) that I will post in small game. The protein supplements for the bait station are coming in :chuckle:
-
;)

cool pics, did he dump over there next to the tree?I put some stuff in a small wire cage yrs back..he ripped the cage down and crapped on it..I had to laugh outloud
-
He looks good to me! Love you set up :chuckle:
-
I have the same camera and just checked it for the second time. It has a 2 meg card and the first round had over 300 pics . I put a new 2 meg card in it and it took 27 pics and said "full". There was a ton of fresh elk tracks in front of my camera, but not a single elk pic. >:( :bash:
Now I am wondering if the new card I put back in it will have the same problems? Any ideas?
I am excited about this new hobby, but this was a huge dissapointment and I need some help!
-
Nice pics! Thats a good looking bear.
-
Last bear from August before I pulled the cameras, and then new ones of a kitty :) after dropping in the 44lb "protein supplement" and putting the cams back in. I have to say I was a little concerned when I walked up to the site and saw the beaver half buried - not sure if it was going to be a cougar or a bobby, or even a bear. I started cabling the beaver to the tree to try and force them to chew on it right there - I had it wired to the tree in the past, but that didn't even slow the bears down from packing it off. When I saw it buried, I looked around quite a bit to make sure there wasn't something guarding it.
-
All great pics. Its an addiction. Mark :o
-
:) (5) 'protein supplements', :dunno: (1) bad Sasquatch impression, and lots of bear pics :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: ....
The 3/32 cables I added to secure the 'protein' did the trick. This seems to be a sizable bear and all of the cables stayed intact. I put the picture of myself in by the tree for sizing reference - I'm 6'1, 220 and that bear makes it to about hip level. Those beaver are all 40lbs plus and there wasn't much left after a 9 days - a few ribs, some hide, and some back bones.
The last pic was from Halloween - those shining eyes are a little spooky :yike: He's just about done with the beaver that was on that tree. He had it yarded around to that back side - I think he was a little camera shy..... :chuckle:
-
I take it you are pretty much after bear, bobcat or cougar then.
-
More pics :)
-
....and more
-
and more
-
good lookin pics and nice bears
-
I take it you are pretty much after bear, bobcat or cougar then.
For this area I thought that is all I would get, which is what I was after, but if you look back at some of my earlier posts you'll see a couple of different deer that weren't deterred by all the other activities going on there :dunno:
-
Good pics, What side of the mountain are you getting these, wetside or east? Just a hobby cause u sure cannot hunt them there now with bait stations.
-
Wet Side. Yep, every thing but bear would be legal to shoot. I hope to get a stand up some time this winter to try and take the yotes or hopefully a kitty.
-
That would be cool. I hope you are successful with a kitty. Lotsa bears still this late in the year. I still have a bear tag. What area and if I fill my tag I will give you some meat :)
I know I know, it's a secret. LOL
Darn black ghosts, I will find you :chuckle:
-
Didn't reread all posts, but is that you in the pic walking away? If not that guy is probably getting the hell outta there before the cult shows up!! :chuckle: Nice series of photos.
-
Just wondering but is leaving the beavers there like that considered waste of wildlife? Isn't that illegal? :dunno:just asking.
-
Just wondering but is leaving the beavers there like that considered waste of wildlife? Isn't that illegal? :dunno:just asking.
:yeah:
-
:hello: As they were all caught on nuisance trapping permits, there should be no issues with disposing of them. I figure this is a lot better than going into a dumpster in black plastic bags. I just ran through the regs and waste of wildlife only pertains to game fish, game birds, and game animals. As beaver are a furbearers, they do not fall under that rule. I agree though, it does not feel quite right just to chuck em. The fur will be getting better soon, so if any one wants one, let me know, and I'll hook you up with some big smelly beaver :chuckle:
That was me in that pic. I keep waiting to find some pics of some one freaking out when they find this spot - hopefully the cameras survive. It does look a bit gory. :puke: I also keep expecting to get a call from WDFW when some one finds it and thinks that I have a bunch of snares set there, catching entire herds of beaver at once.......
-
I'll hook you up with some big smelly beaver :chuckle: :'( :chuckle:

I would like a few of the carcasses

Here kitty, kitty, kitty. Just caught him. Haven't been up since early December to check. Added a 42 lb protein supplement and some left over baked goods tonight. We'll see what comes a knockin.
-
damn thats a light colored cat, eastside?
-
Wet side. National Forest just a bit East of Granite Falls. Wishing I had the time to get some live traps up there. :bash: Still considering it. Last year there was three to four feet of snow at this spot at this time.......
-

Ive got my traps on the edge,I worry about getting them snowed in.I havent seen a cat down here that color, all off the have a burnt orangeish color..
-
I'll hook you up with some big smelly beaver :chuckle: :'( :chuckle:
I knew this statement was coming. It was just a matter of time.
-
Went in to drop off the three protein supplements I caught the other day. The kitty is thinking christmas came late this year. He really worked over the last one and is looking pretty plump. The pics from last week made him look lighter in color, but these show that old wet side orange.
-
Thought I had a squirrel coming in when I first saw the tail, then I looked closer and saw old Peppy :chuckle:
So, you got to ask yourself - who's tougher :dunno: Bobcat or Pole Cat :dunno:
The bob showed up, then decided he was out gunned :guns: and came back a bit later. Check the time stamps on the sequence,
-
Warning Warning Warning
Beware the demon ghost munchkins :yike: - you never know when they're watching.
I think that's one attacking the boss - watch out behind you honey!!! :lol4:
-
Some good pics of the fam at sunset at the bait site :) On the first one, do you think that flash is a little bright :dunno: Fresh protein sups in the background :chuckle:
-
Great photos, thanks for sharing!
-
thats cool eric, looks like a spotted skunk...Tell the little one with the pink boots I want them for trapping,LOL ..that bob is one fat cat
-
Cool pictures. Is there a reason you are not trapping there?
-
Time :bash: :bash: :bash:
-
I hear ya. Trail cams are the next best thing. thanks for sharing with us.
-
I checked the cams on Saturday and saw ( just like Batsquatch did) that a romantic meal seems to set the mood. :chuckle: This 5 course meal was hosted by Peppy, the tuxedo clad matridi. (Rasbo - I think I can figure out why there were different colored cats in the previous posts :bash:)
I really need to get a stand or some cages up there :bash: :bash: :bash:
-
great pics
-
Pretty cool. I like the "spirit of the mountain" floating over the dinner table...
-
Cool pics. That kitty needs to reach it's expiration date.
-
Finally getting these up from last month. Mr. Stinky was back but the pics of him weren't that good. Back to one cat again as far as I can tell. Seems to be well fed for some reason :dunno:
Got to get back up there and see what's stirring. My bats only last about three weeks with the cold nights. Hopefully they're still clicking...
-
sweet, got a cage to put in there??
-
sweet, got a cage to put in there??
or 2?
-
As long as you have had this station set up I am surprised you don't have more predators stopping by.... that place has to stink pretty bad by now....
-
Looks like some of old pics were lost with the last upgrade/ shutdown - I may go back and add them back in.
Here are some from FEB of a very healthy kitty and a very mangy yote....
-
Great pics, that yote is looking nasty.
The cats eating well though.
-
lots of wallets on the ground LOL..that is one ugly yote, thats avatar material for gutpile...all my traps are in,hoping for some phone calls..you have some out...you have a name for that bob yet...Maybe robert
-
Whats wrong with that yote? Is that the "Mange"? Or how ever you spell it :dunno:
-
Nice!
Mulehunter
-
Whats wrong with that yote? Is that the "Mange"? Or how ever you spell it :dunno:
Mange is my guess - not sure what parvo or distember leaves them looking like. I'll make sure and feed him a lead supplement if I get the chance :chuckle:
-
A few more of Tommy Boy ( there Rasbo, ya happy now - I named him :chuckle:), a Vulture ,and a Raven. Both the birds actually came in while I was dropping the latest protein supplement and jacking with the cameras. :)
-
looks like the beaver in pic three bit off more then he could chew. (the skull) looks like he was cuting wood. died then the treee grew with the skull still attached. lol
-
thats a fat cat...is steath cam the brand of that camera..I gott get one.Mine is the old 35 you have to develop...what a place for a cage
-
These are the Stealth 540 IR ( AKA Rogue). I see them for $99 quite a bit from Cabelas/ Bass Pro. I have to check them about every three weeks this time of year or the bats go dead. They take good pics, but I know they are missing a good amount of activity too :dunno:
Hopefully I can get a cage or two up there next season. Or at least a stand - all these furry critters do seam a little lead deficient :chuckle:
-
thanks I will check wally world, momma gets a discount also..
-
:IBCOOL:The Boys are back in town. I believe this will be the first bear of the year for the Trail Cams Forum. :IBCOOL:
I relocated both cams to the approach trail that I had set on last summer. The 1st pic is from the new spot - the "old" primary location was at the crest of the hill you can see in the background. I wanted a little more seclusion ( a spot less likely to be stumbled upon by 2 legged critters). The next 4 pics are from the same location I had a camera at previously ( approach trail) , taking pics at a right angle to where the other camera is now.
Pic list:
1) A much healthier yote than the mut that had been showing up.
2) Tommy Boy going up a tree - center top of the shot
3) Good sized boar
4) Another shot of the boar
5) The big man with a vulture feather and protein supplement in the background.... Beaver man in training ;)
-
thats awesome
-
Looks like a good new spot for the cam, great to see the bear
-
Fun pic's. I can't wait to see more.
-
More pics of the yote, Tommy Boy, and now the Three Bears. :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:

Healthy looking bear  thanks for posting the great pics

He looks lean and hungry...
-
The chocolate is rolly polly for sure
-
These are from last month, hope to get another batch on here before I head to Taiwan for 45 days (hopefully that's all the longer I'm there)
The last pic of Tommy Boy was the only usable one I got after a two week soak :bash: cameras are being finicky again. :bash: Not sure whats going on. Still some good ones though. I added some reference marks to the hangin' tree on one foot increments. The bottom one is 2' above the base of the tree. You can see them in the last pic of Tommy.
The two helpers are gettin lots of milage out of that buzzard feather
-
those are awesome pics, that cats so fat...the young ones look to be enjoying them selves
-
Nice Bobby. Like Rasbo said. Sure looks fat.
-
Great pics!!! Some nice looking bears in the for sure!
-
that is one fat cat! nice bears too.
-
Where is it legal to trap beaver? Or to buy it, of someone?
-
cool pics
-
Where is it legal to trap beaver? Or to buy it, of someone?
The beaver are caught under special permit. There is some certification to go through to get the permit. Theres a thread in the Trapping forum discussing it I believe.
As stated earlier in this thread, I can hook you up with some big wet smelly beaver. Just let me know what your after. The fur is best during the winter, but they do make good bait as you can see. I won't be doing any more trapping until at least July as I'll be out of the country for at least 45 days starting next week. Let me know if you need a date..... I mean a critter :chuckle:
-
great thread! really enjoyed all the pictures!
-
Yeah i wanted some to use as bait. My email is surgehunt@hotmail.com if you could email me i would appreciate it, to get in touch with you.
-
eric,I have had no smelly beaver for some time, will travel for wet beaver :chuckle:
-

Czar, remember what happened last time? :yike: :yike: :bdid: :bdid: :chuckle:
-
Bearhide, I'll see what I can do when I get back from Taiwan. I know I've got one area waiting for me when I get back.
Rasbo - sounds like a personal problem to me :dunno:.....:chuckle:
-
Sounds good, cylvertip, thanks and ill be waiting. :IBCOOL:
-
Thanks for sharing, those are great pics. I bet your bait station smells!! it would freak me out if I randomly stumbled upon a bunch of dead beavers hanging from the trees. :yike:
-

Imagine if you were a beaver and you stumbled across it... :yike:
-
those pics sure are neat with the bobcat pullin on the beaver. im gonna have to try that bait!
-
-hey 1 horn :hello:
-
Cool Series Man!!!
Imagine if you were a beaver and you stumbled across it
:yike:
LMFAO.... Me and my buddies were busting a gut last Sept.... we had snuck into an area where they killed two bulls in 5 minutes the year before. The skeletons were very visible...littering the area... there were no elk to be found.... we started making up stories from the elk's point of view... about the place having bad Voodoo and them avoiding it for a few years! :chuckle:
-
Had went in on the 25th and had over 300 pics on the two cameras, but only one that was worth posting. :bash: But that's how it goes.
Wont get to check them again until at least the second week in July. Not much over hear in Taiwan to get pics of......
No beaver this time, just dog food topped with fruit punch coolaid mix.
Here's one of those little fellers back again.
-
Yeah something is better than nothing ;) I usually have the nothing part :chuckle:
-
Why do you use beavers for bait vs. road kill? Is the beaver a better bait???
-
Why do you use beavers for bait vs. road kill? Is the beaver a better bait???
Look at some of the earlier posts. He is a nusciance trapper as I gather.
-
Why do you use beavers for bait vs. road kill? Is the beaver a better bait???
:dunno: I thought everyone/ everything loves eatin beaver. :chuckle: :chuckle: ..... oh I'm going to hell
Seriously, muskrats and beaver are like ice cream to predators. Since I have them available, I put them to good use. Technically, I think using road kill could be a legal issue.
-
I will pray for you Eric....no beaver for me,I do have some bob meat and some badger...
-
I think that was supposed to make me feal better..... :P
Thanks, I think, Rasbo 8)

Hey beaver station you back in the states from your trip already? Waiting for my beavers :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: give me a holla :chuckle:
-
Got back a week ago :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:- Good to be stateside again- :)
Going to go check the camera's tomorrow - hopfully they worked...
I've got one trapping job lined up to start in the next few weeks so we'll see what I can do about sharing some beaver :chuckle: I've got two prospective 'Johns' wanting some right now.
-
No it ok im good, going this saturday, start scouting for bear signs, but thanks anyways, i got couple other tricks i want to try. Bear here i come, two weeks and counting. :IBCOOL:
-
welcome home :hello:
-
We'll, I was excited to see almost 500 pics on my cameras when I went to check them last week end. One with 438, :IBCOOL: the other with only 52 :dunno: :bash:. Batts were long dead on both. Only one worth while shot that looks almost the same as the last pic I posted. :bash: :bash:
Should get better now as I'm back to mind the store. Hopefully will be able to go procure some more 'protein supplements' in the next couple of weeks. No real time for chasing bear this August unfortunately :bash: :bash:, so I might as well keep feeding them..... Might be able to sneak some time in after Archery Elk. Plans again to get a stand up to provide lead pills for the yotes and kitties - but I've said that before too
-
:hello: OK, I will be adding some pics - finally. Quite a few from last summer of one of the bears, a nice coyote and some skunks from this winter. It's been really slow. The cameras have worked sparadically for the last 6 months and there where lots of blue jay and raven pics :bash: Cat walked right through them but no pics (tracks in the snow though)
I pulled the cameras three weeks ago because I think the area is going to be logged - they needed to dry out after 19 months of almost continuous use anyway. Good thing to, cause there was close to three feet of snow there two weeks ago...
I have a trapping job lined up for next week, so I will see if I can get the cameras back in with some protein supplements.
-
This should get you all fired up for Spring Bear  - though the pics are from August - he's 3' at the shoulder. The last one is the supervision in October.
-
Yote from November and the supervision in the snow. Then a pair of skunks in January.
-
With renewed protein supplements comes renewed critter activity :IBCOOL:
The "Supervision" with some supplements in the back ground and then a few of Tommy Boy. He really needs some lead in his diet. Looks like it will have to wait until next winter to help him out on that with the season closing tomorrow :bash: :bash: :bash:
-
That's a beautiful bobcat!
-
Sorry it has been a while - I've been in Tokyo working on my Radiation Tan since the 22rd of April. Here are a few from the last set I got before heading over here.
There are two cats shown in the pics with snow - a smaller one in the first few, then Tommy Boy shows up - you can actually see an ear sticking out from behind the right side of the large tree in that first pick where the bigger cat shows up. Hopefully it's his girl friend and there are some youngin's running around by now...
Hopefully I will be home by the weekend and be able to see what the cams have on them next week - they are about done - too much moisture for too long. need to get some of the newer ones that run on AA's for a year instead of 8 C's every couple of weeks :bash:
Enjoy
-
good to see ya up and posting..
-
:( Well, apparently two years of almost continuous use is about the limit of the Stealth I-540 Rogues. I got back state side on the 25th of June and finally made it to the bait station on the 5th of July. I was hoping for some good bear shots as there was plenty of activity, but when I opened each camera, water poured out of them - generally not a good sign I would say :bash:. One did take a bit of harassing from a bear, but nothing significant. One had a grand total of 7 pics and the other had 17. Most were of my ugly mug during the last set up. New batts made no difference - both cams are dead :'(.
I now have two of the Bushnell 8.0 trophy Cams in root and hope to get them up by early next week ( I got them for $287 and change for both with shipping from Big Supply Shop on line). I do look forward to only having to spring for AA batts a few times a year instead of 16 C's every three weeks on average.
-
I just hung my 8.0 bushnell yesterday. The box available from Bushnell is a good choice and fits like a charm. I'll look forward to seeing new pics when you get back up and running.
-
bummer on the old and cudo's on the new ones,,,I only put up other people's cams now,I feel much better when the bears eat them :chuckle: sorry epq21
-
awsome pics
-
awsome pics
:yeah:
-
Well, the new Trophy Cams are working Great - pics aren't quite as bright as the Rogues, but they seem to be performing really well. I put them up the last week in July, so they had about a two week soak for a total close to 3000 images!
First three show a few members of the squirrel family: Douglas, Chipmunk, and Western Flying all on the same perch at different times
Then it' Tommy Boy follow by a yote.
Followed by The Supervision and The Inspector delivering protien supplements.
Next post will be Lions, Tigers, and Bears - Oh My! ( minus the tigers)
-
One bear (2 times), two bear, three little kitty kats.....
Can't say I'm entirely happy to get the cats on here. :bash:
-
thats awesome pics there
-
I really love the setup and the thread  many of my non hunting coworkers enjoy these pics as well
-
thats awesome pics there
:yeah:
-
That's a lot of cats
-
:yeah:
Wow. A whole herd of cougars.... :chuckle:
