Title: Bucks Over 180” Thread
Post by: jjhunter on January 08, 2025, 07:16:39 AM
We did one of these a few years ago.  Let’s try another to get us through the post season blues.

Rules: picture, state, year killed only.  More of a picture book than a story book.

We’ll try to pull some of these bucks out of the cracks from guys like Ironhead and Huntinfool.  Karl could be sandbagging as well🤣🤣. I know 2many has 2many as well…

We’ll add bucks that got away.  Same rules: picture, state, year.  Must be hunting season with a tag in your pocket.

This one was a bit short, but close enough. I think it was 178. Maybe if he hadn’t whacked his eye guard.
Tradbow killed during rifle season (modern tag) 2007 ish, Washington

I can’t remember if I posted the mount on here or not.  I just did it not too long ago.  I used my Grandpas and then Dads pack board.   He packed his goat off of Pyramid (not Tripod, I was thinking of that buck) with it.  Simple, yet one of my favorites.

I dont know if you can read the little bit of the story in the RESPECT Photo or not, but in 2016 I drew an Elk tag in the same unit. I didn't kill the bull I was after but saw some truly great bucks. The one in the photo below is what made me decide on Deer hunting the unit.  It was unfortnately for me, killed by the governor tag holder and a friend of mine later that year.

Hide and Seek Buck.   Glory days of the Methow 92.   That was a big buck year.   I think the big winter kill was 96 or something like that.   There was one more rebound and then a huge slaughter one year in the 2000's and its never completely recovered.

Don't know if any of these qualify, only kept because of the special story attached to each. Not the biggest taken, but never scored.  Gave away a lot of sets like these and before cell phone days never took many pictures. Out of Utah in the late 60's.

Great bucks guys, I have yet to take a 180” buck, largest goes 170” personally. I saw this buck on hunt in Wyoming 2023, I believe he was 180”. Another hunter harvested him on private land the day I took this picture. Horrible picture quality, but you can see his frame from behind.

2016 Nevada.  When you could pass bucks like this and count on crushing a solid 180” buck on the last day.  If I could go back, I’d shoot him.  Can still see him standing there in the burn and contemplating letting the air out of him on day 2.

Idaho.  2013.   A buck I saw in 2012 while elk hunting.  Buddy drew a tag the following year found it, lived with it and got it killed.  ‘12-‘17 we were pretty spoiled.  One of Idaho’s greatest mule deer and in the 2nd edition.

It was indeed public land! Although I haven’t been able to get within 30-40 inches of that in MT since. My buddy did get a 177 this year, which is close to that 180 mark anyway.

I figured for sure he was killed…..but while looking for another buck, guess who showed up.(https://hosting.photobucket.com/68034e43-19b7-4de3-9566-c3ba9c52d3f8/b5cfc482-cd41-4504-ad25-6e82149bddb5.png).  Probably doesn’t score 180.  I’ll leave it to a panel for this one.  I wouldn’t care.

Boomer story
It all starts o.77 miles from the road,or parking lot.
With a 16 point buck(really a spike)
This thing was lightning, blink of the eye stuff.(Really it stood there)
Then the most accurate 500 yards shot,(really 25)
Blood trail like a river, didn't go 20(really took many shots)
Then drags it across no name meadow's down the backside of nopic mountain.( O.77 miles)
Grinds the horns up with the meat, cause you can eat the horns.
Sorry no pics ,battery dead ,long hike and all.

Boomers Rule! They are awesome 😎

The only thing cooler than a drop tine buck is a double drop tine buck!
Does anyone know if a drop tine is a genetic thing that can happen on any buck or does that specific gene have to be passed hereditarily? I've seen a few different antler abnormalities on the mountain I've hunted for 35 years. Stickers at many locations on the frame and blade like eye guards but never a drop tine. Lately, it's been just your boring everyday 4 points. Might be time to find another mountain to hunt?

I’ve only come across 4 drop tine bucks in the last 4 years. 3 mule deer, 1 whitetail. That’s covering a very large area as well. The 2 I had history with or knew of the year before did not have drop tines the year before. One was a young 3 point with a 1” drop on one side. The other one I only got pictures of in June and never found him again. He looked like he was going to grow one on each side but I’m hoping to find him this year. Might be good to start a thread on that.

Based on that info, it's possible that in those years where water, nutrients and minerals are all available in abundance, any buck could have the genetic imprint on his DNA to produce a drop tine.
This is what I'll go forth believing. I don't know how many years I'll be able to keep doing this, but with this belief, getting the boots on, doning the pack and heading out across the hill will be much easier now.

I believe it’s passed down . I have an area by my house that consistently has a drop tine buck around somewhere . Yet just a few miles away in places I’ve hunted for decades I’ve yet to see or get 1 on cam. Same with other features I’ve got 1 area that lacks eye guards or 1 on several bucks , yet everywhere else I hunt I rarely see that . Same goes for huge brow tines

We have taken many bucks on the hill that have little to no eye guards. In fact, my buddy took a massive 2 point one year that had eye guards, one that was 3/4 inch long and one that was 1 1/4 inch long. The day he killed him, the fog was so thick you couldn't see 20 feet and when I asked how far away was he, he said he shot it at about 40 yards as the fog was blowing through.

I agree
Double eye guards
Drop times
Seems like they are genetic or specific to certain areas.
Never harvested a drop tine buck.
Have seen a few WT and muley trail cam pics with it.

I've made observations on this for blacktail, and it feels like eye guards and droptines are to some degree a genetic trait IMO. My theory is that with blacktail they typically have so much access to feed, water, and minerals that the abnormalities are either genetic or because of trauma (getting hit by a car). The most unique bucks I've harvested span a 10-year period and come from the same 1-mile radius. Alternatively, 5 miles down the road I see a lot of typical bucks that won't grow eye guards until they hit 4.5+ years old. I did watch one buck on private land that had a crazy left-side abnormality, and he was favoring his right-side when walking. I assumed he was injured during velvet and that factored into the deformed/droptine.

I don’t disagree. I figured it was close. He has a little extra in his mains the photo doesn’t show well, and those extra eye guards pushed it close. The cool thing is it would be net, not gross  :chuckle:

That deer makes over 200 gross for sure with change to boot!  Lots of change!  Look at his bases compared to his facial features and eyes.  Look how wide the hunter is stretching his arms to hold him up.  He's a "Biggin" as they used to say and wide too!  You stretch your arms out and take a measurement and you will see just how wide that buck really is and he doesnt skimp on mass either.

190’s gross is my guess based off the pic, lots of extras but not enough tine length. :twocents:

I figure that buck has good main beams that come towards the camera, so hard to see in that pic. If so, I'm guessing that buck is pushing 220. Quite a bit of junk on that guy. :twocents:
