Title: Things you forgot.....
Post by: rudedawg1085 on June 22, 2009, 05:37:57 PM
So I got a new trailcam the other day and thought today would be a good day to set it up in a spot that i have been scouting for a while now. So as i was walking into the woods it dawned on me that i forgot to bring a scredriver to mount the cam onto a tree. I figured no big deal im sure i can jerryrig something to make it work, which i did. So after i jerryrigged the camera with some rope i made (compliments of Man Vs Wild) i realized that i had forgot the SD card sitting at home so i couldent use the camera >:( ...oops. Not really a deer story since this is the Deer form, but i was intrested in hearing other important things you guys/gals have forgot at home and realized it in the woods. Iv heard stories of people leaving their gun at home so i dont feel all that bad.

i accidentally grabbed my wife's keys one time, she has a key to my truck so i didnt realize it until i was in the woods. the problem was that where i go i have a access key to a gate, well the gate was open and i didnt realize i had the wrong keys until i went to leave the woods and the gate was closed and locked  :bash: so i forgot to check my keys before going to the woods, never again

I have left my knife at home before.  I've actually done it a few times.  Once I ended up gutting my buck with a 2 inch pocket knife, which actually worked just fine.  It was a little dull by the end though.

Went elk hunting last season and forgot to bring the meat packs. Of course we got an animal. Luckily some super cool neighbors from spokane let us use theirs. Thank God for good people.

i went to e-wa to go coyote hunting one time and forgot my rifle at home on the west side. luckily my buddy had an extra.

i forgot my bino's at the truck one day...

forgot my knife one day...

i always seem to forget something, it's usually something minor, except the rifle. that was just plain dumb...can't fix dumb i guess.

There are two things I forget the most and I check and double check each time before I go out. Then for some reason I left them by the door or in the garage or sometimes in the truck. Water and TP :bash:

When I was about 19 my dad got me a pair of 10x50 zeiss binos. I left them on top of the truck when a buddy and I were out scouting, and drove away. Never say them again. I had to tell my dad when hunting season came and I didn't have them. Needless to say who bought the next set.

I took hunter safety when I was in 6th grade that fall hunting season came around and we were on our way to Winthrop on Friday night when we got there I realized I left my hunting license at home. The next morning i got to watch my dad shoot a nice little 3 point that was a tough leason for a 12 y/o.

Last elk season I drove over to Wenas from Stanwood and 5 minutes before I got to camp I realized I forgot my Hunting license at home.  So I drove up and down the roads trying to get phone service to call home cause the service sucks out there to.  I finally got a hold of my father in law and brought it to me.  I guess that was a good way to get him out hunting.  I guess I could have gone to walmart too or  something, but I've never had to get a duplicate so not sure how that works.

Left my keys in a spike camp after bringing a deer out 7 hours deep in the woods it was about 11pm when we realized what I did, no fun at all.

Forgot matches once when my wife and I went camping when we first got married.

Forgot to find out if my spare tire would let down after I bought a brand new pickup.  Had to wait about 8 hours for Lester Schwab to get there, no cell service.  That won't happen again.

Forgot my binoculars after gutting out my first deer when I was a little guy.  Found them that spring when dad and I went back to the spot hanging on the limb.

Forgot to take my gun off safety one time.

Forgot to make sure I had plenty of clearance when wearing my waders one time, had to cut them off!

A couple years back my boss decided he would start deer hunting again after a few years off.  So opening morning he gets up bright and early and walks out to his truck with his gun and cup of coffee.  Upon entering his vehicle he some how sets off the alarm to his truck.  Panic set in as he tried to figure out how to get the alarm off before waking the neighbors.  Finally he got the alarm off and went on his hunt.  A few miles up the road from his house, there is a nice three point feeding in a clearcut off the road.  He stops the car and reaches in the backseat for the gun, but it is not there, it was leaned against the wall of his shop. :chuckle:

I forgot my license when we went pheasant hunting once.  My dad left his deer tag at home on opening weekend a couple of years ago.  We were two hours away from home.  The funny thing is he took a shot at a whitetail buck and missed.  When we got home he realized that he forgot it... Good thing he missed!  I would'nt want to try and explain that to a game warden.  Oh yeah,  one time at elk camp my buddy locked his keys in his truck when he was warming it up on opening morning.  It's a good thing we had three trucks with us.  He drove my truck home to get his spare key while dad and I went hunting.  He lived in Zillah at the time and we were hunting outside of Yakima.  Missing opening morning always hurts.

2 years ago we set out to Ride into Ingals Creek in early September.  It was a very hot day 85 plus so we planned to hit the trail later in the afternoon.  After arriving at the trail head and saddling up the stock.  I went back to the trailer to put my jeans and boots on.  I had been wearing shorts and flip flops.  To my surprise I had forgotten my pants at home and I had brought 1 boot from 2 pairs so I had 2 left boots.

The word that best sums up that weekend was "RASH"

Went to a small state out in the middle of the ocean last year and didn't remember bring my hunters ed card.  Wasn't planning to hunt there but got invited anyway.  Real big hassle to get a license there without the card.  I recommend bringing it along when leaving the state.

I forgot the release to my bow (pre trad days)once while elk hunting.  I figured no big deal.  Sure enough, got a nice spike standing in front of me and I couldn't pull the fricking bow back due to sore ligaments in my hand.  I tried and I tried.  THat spike wandered off and up came another.  I tried and tried, that one moved on and up came another.  To this day, I'm sure I've never seen so many spikes in the general season. LOL

After shooting and dressing my buck out last year I forgot my shooting sticks where I shot the deer (hope their still there :chuckle:)

The year before after dragging my buck down the hill I realized I left my new camo baseball hat with built in leds back up on the top of the ridge. My buddy found it the next year but the chipmonks got to it :bash:

I've left: One pair of binoculars and two monoculars in the woods -never to be recovered again.

Once I left my day pack in the woods after a nature call. I got back to camp after that afternoon's hunt only to realize what I did. It was a bitch finding a camo day pack by flashlight! Keys to the truck and trailer were in it.

I've lost gloves in the woods. Hats too. A comphy sitting cushion.

I don't know how many times I've left the trailer without my orange vest, the radio, other little schit that I've ended up walkin bak a hundred yards or so for...

Left the door wide open on the truck once. Remembered that hours later.

I've forgot a knife a couple of times on day trips for deer, I was unsuccessful on those trips,
I was going elk hunting up at clear-water one morning, about the lake Quinault area I discovered I had forgot to bring any ammo. Well it was a bout a hour before first light so if I went home for ammo I was going to get up there well after first light. I stopped at the Amanda Park Mercantile and seen someone inside moving around s I beat on the door until someone came to the door. I bought a box of 150gr win PowerPoint's for my 7mag. I killed a raghorn bull that day.

In a hurry for an evening coastal elk hunt, my partner shows up at the house and we start piling my bike and gear in, leaving my bow on the lawn for last.  In the mix of saying goodbye to my wife and kids, I just jumped in and we drove off.  45 minutes later I realized I didn't have my bow. U-turn.  45 minutes later we pull up to my house where my wife is standing out front with my bow and a "figures..." look on her face.  We still made it out that evening but man I felt like a complete moron :bash:

Not really sure how i did this but, My buddy and i pulled up so a nice spot that over looks a canyon, so we figured instead of taking out guns and gear (before the season..scout trip) that we should just take a hike down and see what we can stubble accross. So we go down the canyon and come back a couple hours later to the truck and realized i left my drivers side door WIDE open...Not sure if anyone drove by and noticed but we had two guns and  backpacks sitting on the back seat...luckily no one took them

My dad took my older brother out to go along with my dad on a day hunt in the late season with his bow, came up on there spot much before daylight, a couple inches of snow and tracks EVERYWHERE.. perfect conditions... got out of the truck to start hiking, and left his bow at home.

I forgot my brand new binoculars early archery a couple years ago, luckly, someone we where hunting with had an extra pair.

Forgot my ammo in camp this year, adn I had 5 rounds in my gun, we where two or three miles from camp, missed a buck four times, and only had one shell left, so I had to run back to camp to get my box of ammo, so I could go try to find the deer.

I discovered I had forgot to bring any ammo.

Popping into a local sports store would not work for me. Most of the time I've got my wildcat 30-338 Ruger77. I'd have a tough time finding any of the in the box. She'll prolly chamber a .308 Norma but I haven't tried. Still prolly will never see any of the on the store shelf either.

Was up in the hills one time. Tough climb with full packs -had just summitted the ridge and was taking a rest before descending the other side down another 1,000 ft to the lake. Wally starts walking off a leg cramp. We'd taken all our gear off and set our rifles down. From around the bend I hear him sort of whisper/yelling, "Bear, Bear, Bear". By the time I came runnin with ole' Bertha, that big blacky was ducking into the woods on the far side of the meadow.

Had he not forgot to take his rifle while walking off that cramp, he'd have a much bigger Bear on the wall than the one he does now. I remind him of that once in a while.

I parked at a landing and stepped out of my truck to get ready to start walking and the wind blew the (somehow) locked door shut with my pack inside and the truck still running.  It was first thing in the morning, so I just went hunting (at least I was wearing orange, had my rifle and 6 bullets in my pocket.)  It was an old truck and still had wing windows so later I was able to walk down to where some loggers were working and borrow some tools to break into it.  Screwed up the rubber around the window, though.

Shot a deer in Ohio many years ago, after confirming she was down I put my gun in the trunk along with my keys, too bad the doors were locked too.  Middle of a cornfield, deer down, locked vehicle with my gear inside. Luckily the land owner let me borrow his car and I drove 2 hrs home and got my wifes keys and drove back. That was a long night.

I once forgot my hunters education card on a trip to Wyoming. I didnt realize that proof had to be carried in person, thought that since I mailed in a photo copy to apply for the tag that it would be sufficient enough. I had to drive like 8 hours the day before the season opened to get to a store with a fax machine. My mom faxed a copy to me and I was back out hunting. Was lucky we got there a few days before the season, would have hated for something like that to cut into my opener.

Have also forgot my removable magazine once.

Binos on a shed hunting trip also. Which all you shed hunters know, is about as bad as leaving your rifle.

Went out duck hunting and we got the deeks all set up and the blind all set up.  Got in the blind had my coffee and then it was about 10 minutes before opening time.  The birds were already landing in the decoys.  Went to grab my gun and couldn't find it.  At first I though it had fallen out on the way over.  Headed back to the rig.  No gun, woke the wife up and she headed down stairs.  It was in the case next to the door.  I had left it at home.  I was designated caller until my buddy shot his limit.  :bash:

I have never forgot her again if that helps. Also all I hear now about every 20 minutes over the radio, what are you doing? Are you there? or pssssst just checking in. So now with me being half deaf I spend half my time with the radio to my head or it turned up loud.

Forgetting your wife takes the cake BLKBEARKLR.  I just about pee'd myself when I read that...I'll laugh about that for the next week.

My dad had the spring bear tag this past spring, and the guy we got the key from said "make sure it fits in the lock before you drive past an open gat" but we forgot.  Drove up the road, came down and it was locked.  6:00 on a Friday night, everybody up there was all ready headed out when we came up.  We where 13 miles up from the nearest public road, and it sucked.  But the guy that locked us in (on purpose)  told the security gaurd and he came up and found us.

Hmmmm. Maybe you forgot the wife for some sub-conscience reason??? :dunno:
I forgot my realease on the hood of my buddies truck as we drove off one time in eastern OR. I was like, well I'll just shoot with my fingers. So I took a practice shot and, yeah that wasn't going to work. My buddy went hunting and I went looking for my release. I found it right were the truck was parked!! Lucky me....
I was going scuba diving with my cousin a few years ago and he forgot ALL of his dive gear at home..We were 3 hours from his house..How does one go on a dive trip and forget EVERYTHING ???? He does dumb sheet like this ALL the time. He's actually pretty entertaining to have around....
