Here in the Evergreen State we are blessed with ruffed (forest) grouse and blue grouse (hooters), and some guys like to hunt the lowlands while others go after their birds waaaaaay up in that high country.
I lean toward blue grouse in the high lonesome and look for them back in the timber where most people never seem to go for the single reason that some of these birds have never seen a human, or are rather complacent because no human ever did anything but freak when the bird blew cover in a flurry.
I have found loads of grouse in high places, like the top of Teanaway Ridge or up around Walupt Lake, Pinto Rock, Takhlakh Lake, along Sawtooth Ridge between Lake Chelan and the Methow River valley, up around Black Pine Lake out of Winthrop; all kinds of places.
But others really dig those ruffed grouse and I've killed a fair number of them with my Beretta S/S double in 12-gauge and an old H&R 16-gauge single shot back when I was a kid.
So....which do you prefer and why?
-
I like blues because they are bigger and I like the high country but I typically shoot more ruffies because they live closer to me.
-
I like both,get mixed bags around 2500 to 3000 hancock..mostly ruffed
-
I like them all. Grouse is my favorite bird to shoot.

Same for me but either will do. Grouse is about my favorite table fare! ;)
-
I love to shoot the blue grouse the best. Bigger is better!
Besides, I can get into large groups of blues and get several at a time, whereas the ruffed do not seem to group up as much IMHO. (at least where I hunt them...)
-
I'm a blue grouse fan only because thats what we get into the most, plus I like hunting high elevations. Grouse are my fav because they open first and I can hunt them while scouting for deer and elk.
-
Blues. Nothing like those big birds flushing and breaking through the cover.
-
I shoot both but like to go for the blue bigguns........got some ridges that are covered with blues!
-
Um, I like spruce grouse... :P The country is in-between that of the blue and ruffed grouse.

:chuckle:
Well actually I love hunting sharptail grouse. Such easy targets always roostin in those trees and the game department always puts up those signs showing you where there might be some sharptails at :P
-
I like spotted owls :P
-
Just for laughs, how large do you think an adult blue grouse can get?
How many pounds?
How tall?
-
Blue grouse are by far my favorite. They're in more open country and easier to hunt with a dog. Plus as others have said they are bigger and obviously that means there's more to eat. It's going to be nice having a daily limit of 4 this year.
-
Have to like those high mtn Blues. Now you talk about a tough bird!! I work to get my limits every year, but its worth it. Now that it 4 to a limit I am all over that.
-
I like Blues High in the Olympics me and the setter or the pointer. Single shot 410 is what I prefer up in the high country
-
I usually get 5 to 10 birds a year and all but one have been ruffed grouse. When I got the blue I showed it to a couple hunters a few hours later and they said it was the smallest one they ever seen. :yike: I don't care though because it tasted great. I don't really ever go out after grouse. I just try and keep a shotgun or .22 with me in case I see one. I did make the mistake of trying to take one out with my 300 win mag. I aimed for the ground about 2 feet in front of it with hopes of only a couple rocks killing it. The breast was so full of gravel I couldn't chew without hurting my teeth. :bash:

I've seen one that would rival a sage grouse once. Biggest grouse I've ever seen. The breast was bigger than a northern greenhead's.

Been there before. I've shot two with my 30 06. There was nothing left to eat, what a waste. I only shoot at them with a shotgun or a 22 now.

How bout shooting them in the head? I have shot the heads or necks off of a lot of grouse with my .270 and 45-70. Me and my dad always keep track of how many grouse we kill every year. One year for some reason I wrote down how many I shot with a shotgun and how many with my rifles. Out of 32 grouse that year I shot the heads off of 18 of them with a rifle. That is also the only year that I have ever killed more grouse than my dad.
-
One more reason I like Blues.....
-
Awesome Ice!!!

Thats what I was trying to do. Just kept hitting them in the body so I quit trying.

Iceman...What on earth is that gruel into which you have inserted perfectly good sections of grouse?
That looks awful.
-
Cant make everyone happy I guess. :dunno:

A rice dish, not quite done yet, so a little wet still. We like it.

If ya like curry and mushroom soup Ive got a decent recipe
-
My brother shot the head off one at 5 yds. with a 7mm STW... no head left. Tasted yummy though! Oh, an I like blues the best, just because I like the high country more. But I will shoot either.

Its like chicken and rice...with grouse and more seasoning :chuckle:
-
I cooked grouse in many a camp with just the breasts and legs lightly floured with a bit of salt, pepper and seasoning salt, and a couple of slices of bacon. Simply superb!
If I could figure out how to post a photo on this _)(&&(R$$#%$#(&*(*& forum, I'd post a photo from flickr I shot last year on the Maverick Saddle north of Sugarloaf lookout out of Leavenworth.
-
Man... I just ate lunch and those pics made me fricken hungry again!!! I prefer the blue too.
-
I'll be the odd man and cast my vote for ruffeds. Kind of like asking whether I prefer porterhouse or ribeye though.
-
I've shot lots of big blues with my 30-30. only 1 i have shot has blown to pieces .
-
I've hunted and bagged both, but prefer blues over ruffed.

I have seen a blue grouse way in the middle of no-where, that was the size of a smaller turkey! :yike: I am not kidding at all, :o

I believe you. I have seen really large blue grouse over the years; big enough that one bird's split breast could provide the main course for two people. That's a lot of grouse!
I am anxious this year to try Grouse parmigiana. That ought to be delicious!
Of course, first I have to shoot one of the buggers...

Hey, I thought you were a grouse purist? Parmigiana? What gives?! :chuckle:
-
My fav way is sauteed in a bit of butter.
Second fav is sauteed in a bit of butter then poured over some noodles with cream of mushroom..
-
I prefer blues because of the size but I'm not into discriminating.
-

I am a grouse killer and eater. Nothing pure about me, at my age! :chuckle:

Blue grouse are fun to hunt by walking and wing shooting them...........similar to pheasant hunting. Ruffed grouse are more of a PIA since they are usually in a brushy creekbottom and many times you never even see them when they flush.
-
I saw 11 ruffed grouse yesterday while i was bear hunting.I can't wait till september
-
Gruose any type gotta go with gruose courdon bleu. but then again pheasant cordon bleu is tasty also. heck it's all good
-
Love 'em both, but we have more ruffs here (either that or they are easier to find), so blues are like a "special treat". 8)
-
Either or but I prefer blues. I like to cut the breast into chunks, marinade in Yoshida's and shishkabob with sweet onions, bell peppers and pineapple. Mmm m mm.
-
blues are the ultimate but consistently get more ruffed.
-
One of my friends father use to own the Entiat Tavern. We use to stop in after Deer Hunting with some Blues and he would toss them in the Broaster for us!!! Brews and Broasted Blues!!! :brew:
-
My son spotted this one on our Montana scouting trip.

I like big blue's they actually make a meal

Yeah theres a few spruce grouse running around. I came across a couple and killed one. thats the one and only time I've ever seen them.

There's just something about those big high country blues on a crisp September morning that does it for me!

Amen!
-
doesn't matter,It is nice getting a blue,mostly ruffed where I'm hunting
-
saw 20+ blues friday :) been seeing alot everywhere actually........should be a real good grouse year.....I think most gamebirds around here got two good hatches out.......been seeing alot of quail, chukars, and huns also  but no pheasants :'(
-
I am a blues fan and so is my dog. We were hiking towards PCT and my dog flushed 2 huge blues.
I will be going back there come 09/01/2009.
-
HoofsandWings:
Good luck along the PCT Tuesday.
To everyone else...shoot and scoot.
Come this Labor Day weekend, be sure and take care with your shots because there will be a lot of hikers and other recreationists out in the woods, and most of them will NOT be wearing any kind of fluorescent orange.
-
Spruce grouse, I have yet to find a bird more stupid than them, You can kill them with a rock, if you miss they usually won't fly but just stand there. One time there were 7 or 8 in a tree and 2 of us used a 22 pistol and took turns head shooting our limits. No wonder you don't see very many of them anyone.

Thanks Dave, on Sunday I will be trying out your honey hole at Snoqualmie Pass. I have been there before, but now I think I should be hunting that grove to the west of the road by the pond. I am hoping there are some pickable berries too.
-
OK, all you guys that got out....let's hear the results and see the pics!
-
I have been seeing grouse all over, and yesterday I was out all day only to see one bull elk and one rabbit (that I did not get a shot at)
Need some wet weather me thinks.
