So far January has been kind. Still packing. I backed away and left them be.

I went for a hike this weekend and all the deer I seen were bedded until around 2 pm. They all got up and in groups of three or four started feeding and then went around the mountain to lower ground. All the bucks I seen were still packing and all the deer look really good. Once again, nice pictures Bone. Your pictures almost always look like you are standing next to them! Beautiful pictures!

That second one has some really unique antlers.
-
Beautiful pictures, they look very cozy soaking in the sun. I'd like to find the sheds of that second buck, lots of character.
-
Tough time even in an easy year, hope they both make it, thanks Bone!!!

Bone, your title "looking rough", is there something about these deer that appears unhealthy? Or was there another meaning? I can't really tell but the first guy almost has a sad look in his eyes! Great pics thanks for sharing!

First buck reminds me of my father in the later days. He hated January. He’s tired. Many winters would claim him. The second young buck was very thin. No energy.

Love your photos. Buck 2 is sooooo cool.

As always, great pics Bone. with all the hunting SEASONS I'd be tired too! the deer are all run ragged. My son talked to a rancher in Loomis area and was told of trouble they are having with wolves killing their calves. They graze them on government lease land. They went up and moved over 100 calves down to the ranch to protect them better. The wolves came down and killed over 30 calves. supposed to get reimbursement from WDFW for kills, but the WDFW a pain to work with and they make it hard to get anything back. So pretty much gave up on the WDFW.
Sad

that program has been in place for years. It has never had any money in it.

Thank you for that. Puts it in perspective. The more I look at the first buck—he does look scrawny.
