Title: Christensen Rifles QC issues??? Anyone heard this??
Post by: jrebel on February 08, 2025, 06:17:16 PM
I was in a local gun shop today and fondling a Christensen rifle.  I have only owned one and was not happy with it at all, but continue to read good reviews from others.  Was considering giving them another go.....but then after this talk, thought twice about it.

This employee says they have sent back 3 or 4 rifles in the last couple months with what he described as QC problems with their actions.  He didn't qualify and I didn't ask what the issues were.  Anyone else hearing or seeing any QC issues with Christensen??

That dude at Stan’s just wants to sell you something else so he can earn his credits and score a free gun. All my Christensens shoot.

So he wouldn't get the same credits for selling a 2K rifle from Christensen??  Also.....not all christensens shoot.....I had one that was the most finicky rifle I have ever owned.  It liked one bullet and one bullet only and otherwise was a let down for the price I paid.

I get that all manufacturers have issues at some point.  I am trying to remain open minded....... but I don't know why he would lie about sending 3 or 4 back for QC issues.  Do enlighten me though....do they not get credits for selling all their firearms?

Bought a used S&W .300wm around 1988 never missed
New guns are over rated

I sent one back for excessive tool marks in the chamber. I sent Christensen pictures and they said that's not going to effect the gun, but that's and sloppy and not normal or acceptable. I had the gun back quickly and it shoots lights out, shooting sub 1" groups with several different factory offerings. I followed their break in instructions exactly. They are a mass produced rifle just like many others. Mass production will lead to errors.

I'm curious, was the rifle they mentioned sending back the evoke? Its a new proprietary 60 degree throw action. The other CA actions I believe are rem700 clone.

I bought a 338 lapua MPR a few years ago and the folding stock had a little more play than I thought it should have and the timing was off on the cam for unlocking the bolt (very common for that style of action). Neither would affect how it shot but I can be real picky. I sent it back and the stock is tight when locked open and the cam timing is better. So far working up loads with a couple different bullets it is grouping 1/2" at 100 yds. Would I buy another with the experience I had..... definitely if I was in the marked for the type/style of rifle they are making. Again most people wouldn't have noticed or cared about the reasons I sent it back for but in either case they fixed the issues to my satisfaction.

Yes, certain firearms manufacturers offer sellers incentives to sell their products. So in any given month, let’s say Bergara might gift a rifle if you sell so many of their products. I’m sure he’s sent some back but I take all their info with a grain of salt.

I have seen several threads where people have problems with them.  Personally I don’t have any opinion of these rifles, never even handled one but a few searches on many of the popular forums will reveal many threads about issues with those rifles.  Though the same could possibly be said about many other rifles as well.  But in my mind the Christensen name sticks out as quality control issues.

I really wanted a Ridgeline when I was purchasing my last rifle. Through my research I did find some people had issues with theirs and like stated earlier, they could be finicky with ammo selection. This was not the rule, rather the exception. If the build time wasn’t over 9 months at the time (covid) I would have went with the Ridgeline. The one thing I noticed is they stood behind their products and any issues were resolved with no fuss by CA. My buddy has two of them ( a Mesa and a Ridgeline) and they are both great shooters with zero issues.

Yes, I have heard of it when I was shopping last year. I also took note that when I was pursuing rifles, the majority of used rifles in multiple markets were Christensen Arms.

I’ve got a Ridgeline fft that I love and had zero issues.    Buddy bought the same rifle after seeing mine and his bolt would get stuck after shooting.   He sent it back and we will se once it’s back.   Personally I think that’s unacceptable for a $2000 doller rifle     My next rifles going to be a weatherby alpine 307 I think

All the Christensen’s I have handled or shot have been great guns. My 6.5 PRC Ridgeline is a tack driver! Used a Ridgeline in 300 PRC on a moose last fall at 450 yards, bullet right where aimed.

I was also considering one a few years back pretty seriously, but the volume of QC issues and ammo picky-ness complaint posts online were enough to steer me away. Re-reading a few threads it seems like 50/50 guys getting good shooters and guys that have to send them back or run a lot of troubleshooting.

Seems to be a common theme in that neck of the woods in Utah with Fierce being down the road  :chuckle:

My Ridgeline shoots excellent.   I’m way more nervous about the Fierce 22 CM that I ordered on Friday.  :chuckle:

I bought a Mesa .300 win mag from the classifieds here and it shoots way better than I can. Zero issues and drives tacks with factory 180 gr Accubonds.

Some people just hate them. id be willing to bet most of the time that it’s “operator error” and they end up blaming the rifle for sub par groups. I have an original ridgeline and the newer fft. Both are absolute tac drivers.

I have had a Mesa in 6.5 Creedmoor for 4 years. I love it sub 1" with factory ammo and zero problems. The best factory trigger I have ever felt.

My only experience with CA was four or five years ago I bought a new Ridgeline 6.5 PRC.  Got it home and scoped the barrel.   Upon looking down it with the borescope :yike: was my initial response.  I've seen new factory barrels that were worse but they were also on three hundred dollar rifles too.  I wasn't expecting it to be as perfect as a good custom barrel but I certainly wasn't expecting it to look the way it did either.  There were a lot of tool marks pretty much the whole length of the barrel.  I've had factory barrels that looked like sheeott before and though they were a copper fouling hog still shot relatively well but this was back when the only brass available for the 6.5 PRC was in loaded ammo and IF you could get your hands on any it was ridiculously priced so I didn't really want to burn up $80 a box ammo seeing "if" the thing would shoot.  I called up CA explained what was going on and how it looked and they were extremely good about it.  Gave me the option of shooting it first to see if it would shoot or they'd send out a FedEx label and I could send it back for them to take a look at it.  I opted to send it back.  Few days after shipping it off I got a call from them telling me they'd taken a look at it and agreed with my thoughts and apologized for it.  I think it was around three or four weeks later I got an email telling me they'd replaced the barrel and shot it at their test range with both Hornady 143 ELD-X and 147 ELD-M ammo with the 143's right at .5 and the 147's a little under that.  Got it back scoped it up.  I had the same ammo and shot both as well.  Pretty much like the test targets they sent back with it the 143 stuff went right at .5 and the 147's shot under that.

I'd be lying if I didn't admit I was initially a little pizzed off with how the barrel scoped but CA was stellar about taking care of it and making it right.  It wasn't necessarily the best way to start but we all know shhhtuff happens and based on my experience with them I certainly can't say anything bad about them.

Aren't they the ones that got their hand slapped for sending out a gun with no rifling that magically had a "test" target with a nice little clover leaf group included with it?  :chuckle:

I thought it was Fierce that was sending rifles out with smooth bore barrels.

You might be right, I know they were too but I had heard something about CA on a podcast. Can't find anything online about it though so maybe I'm spreading disinformation   :dunno:

This is why I am so skeptical in giving them a second chance.  This is the exact thing I found with the first one Christensen I owned.....only liked one bullet.  Makes me wonder if their carbon fiber barrels are just garbage.   :dunno:

I have two Christensen rifles. Both shoot well. I had a problem with the newest one, a 7 PRC in the FFT. The factory installed muzzle brake was cross threaded. I got it off using a barrel vise and a pipe wrench, but the threads were mostly gone.

Christensen replaced the barrel in less than a week no questions asked.

I loved the video.....love the honest review and not pandering to a company because their name.  I have seen way to much negative to consider giving them a second chance.    :bash: :bash: :bash:
