Title: About time to shoot the hunting bow
Post by: Hoytstaffshooter83 on June 23, 2009, 04:19:59 PM: Well today was the first day since the redding shoot that I have had time to shoot my bow, its been quite a drought for me, the normal 400+ arrows a week has been a long time coming, back then I shot my Pro Elite Target bow, but with Oregon and Wa seasons coming soon I had to pick up the new alphamax 35 and start to shoot. as I said before IMO this is the best hunting bow this year, for what I look for in a hunting bow it has it all, and no other bow I have ever shot holds better then the AM.. period. I have MXR custom strings/cables that should be broken in soon, id guess they have less then 200 shots on them so far, including the 15 or so I just shot. I also have a black custom 7 pin ignite sight, its awesome! and my old doinker stabilizer i have had had for over 10 years.... I dont see any reason to change, along with that I still have my copper john CAT series fall away, that was one of the first fall aways back in the day, also something I have seen no need to change.. I sighted in 20 and 30 then 40 and this was my first 3 shot group at 40 after dialing her in...... for not shooting this bow for over 3 months and any bow for almost 2 im pretty happy, a little fine tuning and regular shooting and this should be a great season!!!!!

Post by: Todd_ID on June 23, 2009, 08:30:04 PM: Oh how nice it would be to be able to have a hunting bow and a target bow instead of being a middle aged married guy with A bow for all occassions that I have to tune for the different arrows each time I do one or the other. Spring Bear and Turkey seasons are the worst because they're in the middle of the 3D season!

The good news is that I know the bow very well, and it's pretty much never the bow's fault when I miss.

Post by: BULLBLASTER on June 23, 2009, 10:10:18 PM: i need to start shooting my hunting bow too... but which one will i set up for hunting? i have been playing musical bows lately :P probly should sell one though. the faithul 70 lb x force is tempting, but there is a perfectly good 60 pound x force holding up the wall with no accessories on it too, then there is the sweet shoting madness xl. i just dont know what to do.

It also helps that you know what you're doing. If you're like me on the other hand who learns through trial and error what you just explained would take forever.

No bear hunting was done. My buddy couldn't make it, so I was a good boy and stayed busy around the house.

I'm only 35, but the trial and error method for the last 23 years of bowhunting is the source of my information. So, yeah, it does take forever to do it the hard way. Thanks to the internet, there are plenty of teens and 20-somethings who know bow tuning better than I do now. Experience is learning what doesn't work; how you get it makes little difference.

Yeah, I can feel the pull: especially when I see those beautiful works of art that you guys are shooting and building. I'm just not ready to accept that a miss couldn't have been anything but my fault. :chuckle: :bash:

I shot with a guy at the Montana State Championship 3D shoot a few days ago that shot a longbow well and had killed about everything under the sun with it. It was pretty impressive to say the least. His version of bowhunting was a little different than mine, for sure! One of these days I'll find a left handed one to try for a few weeks to see if I could get used to hunting and 3D shooting with it.
