Payton notched both turkey tags opening day of youth season! After the Tom’s flew off the roost and went the other way we had to play spot and stalk to where we saw a few big Tom’s strutting on a flat. We got up there and up popped a red head above the grass. She raised up and shot him free hand at 30 yards and down he went, along with a 2nd LOL. Ended up being Jake’s but she was tagged out!
Next up was little sister, Rylee. After missing a nice Tom earlier today, Rylee got redemption when 3 Tom’s came charging into 10 yards strutting while we set up behind our silhouette decoy. First one went down and then the other 2 started beating him up and she shot the seconds! Both kids are tagged out, opening day of youth turkey season 2025!
Will be hard to top 2025 youth turkey season opener with 4 tags punched!

This is a Hail Mary, but thought I would throw it anyways. I've been hunting around Hunters for the past two days with my 12 year old son looking for his first gobbler. We've found plenty of Toms but they have all been on private land and we can't get them to leave their hens. We've put in quite a few miles on the public to no avail. I've killed plenty of deer and elk, but am a relative turkey novice myself. Tomorrow we head back to the west side.
If there is anybody who has a gobbler or two they would let a youngster go after tomorrow morning, that would be much appreciated. No worries if not. Congrats to all the youngsters who nailed one.

I can’t help ya with land access but I can give ya a piece of advice. If your son shoots a bird and it’s flopping on the ground don’t wait for it to die! Go finish it off. My 9 year old daughter and I found that out today. She absolutely peppered this big ole Tom and he flipped and flopped for a whole minute then got up and ran off then flew off🤦🏻♂️
-
That is a brutal lesson. Tough animals.
-
Yeah my daughter was tore up after that! Especially since we had hiked 6 miles and climbed a small mountain😂

I don’t have a private land spot, but I can send you some pins for spots not far from there that produce.

Lota of great photos, congrats to all.

Thank you for the kind offer Sundance, but we ended up just driving home today. It was a fun weekend.

Finally pulled one of my son’s birds out of the freezer to try my hand at feather art. Big learning curve, fan got away from me, about 4 hours total. I’ll try it again after my neck stops killing me 😂
-
That is awesome! Definitely gonna try that one!

That looks great, Sundance.

Thanks for the flip Karl, I haven't been able to figure out how to get pics to post correctly from my phone :bash:
I'll do a post hopefully after this weekend, still learning myself but I watched a lot of videos before trying. Big thing I learned is to use an easel, my neck is shot from standing over this for hours on end. I also ran out of feathers (plus I was tired) when I decided to use the wing in the right lower corner. At first I was just pulling/cutting feathers and making a pile, but quickly I learned you need to make an order to things to keep the right size/color pattern. I'd also use a plastic shield to prevent overspray on the feather that have already been laid, the spray glue is supposed to be clear but definitely started to pile up. Big feathers need to be stapled since the glue wasn't enough, I used a 1/2" sanded board and would possibly go to 3/4" to better hold staples. Paint the board black so nothing shows through in light areas, and do a layout for the fan with marks for placement so the fan shape doesn't run away on you (which mine did). I went 4 hours straight through, and by the end this is probably why the fan got sloppy. Next time I'll go in stages to stay fresh and keep the quality higher.

Well imo the effort was worth it because that's the coolest fan mount I've ever seen :twocents:
