Hi all,
I’m wondering if anybody can recommend a good fishing lodge preferably in Baja/sea of Cortez
I went down there many many many moons ago and had a crazy experience, and I still have a marlin on my wall to remind me of it.
Granted this was the spring after 9/11 for context, so, almost 24 years ago, but the company grandpa and I stayed with is still in business, I just have zero idea who’s who down there anymore. We fished with Van Wormer/East Cape Resorts. What I remember was the guides were spot on, but you got what you paid for, and the food sucked. Not because I don’t love Mexican food, but it was the fact they tried to cater to an American palette and we were hoping for authentic cuisine, but other than that, it was spot on.
My girlfriend is just learning the ways of the ocean, and we need a vacation.
I’d love to do a day or two of big game fishing, a day or two of inshore/near shore fishing (roosters, dorado, wahoo, etc), maybe some fly fishing, but we’re looking for a low key authentic outfit.
We don’t want to break the bank but thought I’d see who can recommend what on here. I can speak a little Spanish, but ya know, also want to be safe.
Was also thinking about Sayulita, but Baja seems pretty low key…
Thanks!

Just got back from a week of surfcasting Los Cabos. Easy to do. Just as easy is mis morning cruise through the marina and deal with a small boat owner. Avoid excursions. For the price you'll get more trips and should be at least one that id stellar.

Go to LosBarriles, about 1.5hr from the Cabo rat race. Very low keyed, excellent authentic food, freaking awesome town folks, safe! I fish there twice a year for the past 7 years. I stay at place that I like cause it is small and off the beaten path - Los Pescadores. Our friend Patti (American -owns the place) can book you fishing trips with her guys or some other local good captains in the area. We usually book six days of fishing and take the last day to hang out. Her hotel has 10 rooms all are super clean, neat, comfy and A/C works perfectly! She can arrange for transportation from Cabo Airport to her place. We typically rent dune buggies to have some fun after fishing and get dinner/drinks elsewhere, but her place does have a great restaurant, so you could stay and eat there all meals without renting transportation if needed to save some funds..

It’s been quite a while but we stayed at and fished out of Rancho Leonero on the east cape. Super fun. At the time, they weren’t very well versed in fly fishing. We tried and I caught a bonito on the fly rod but that was the only fish we caught on flies. Caught lots of dorado, roosters, etc. We didn’t do any offshore fishing.

Been a long time, kind of seasonal for the fishing and would love to chase roosters on the beach. Los Barriles is a great choice.

Buena Vista Oceanfront & Hot Springs Resort for best fishing & not in town vacation experience at Spa Buenavista this is a skip South of Los Barilles
The non-tourist town of Buena Vista is a touch North of resort, other places in town also but still beachfront and reasonable. This one has cabanas and great authentic food.
Good Luck! Uhm, and we will need fish pics. They bring in dancers and put on a show Sat nights. Pangas and cruisers available. You have got me thinking about going now!

Brad with Bobber Down Guide Service out of Wenatchee has a place down on Baja. Never been fishing with him in Mexico but he has always done great fishing salmon locally.
