Title: Scouting trip
Post by: kodiak06 on May 04, 2025, 12:01:32 PM
Just got home from a trip up north. 1140 miles on the truck, 924 of that was the hwy portion. I had a guy I served with that was gonna hunt with me this year and scout bail due to health reasons so, SOLO again unless my son goes. Spent 3 days hiking hard and the last day SUCKED. I guess a BIG wind hit the mountain as I had to crawl and climb through blow downs to get to my cams I left for the winter lol. I did have a video of one in another area I hoped to have on cam, he'll be a stud I think if he makes it to this coming season.

Nice! I've been trying to get a whitetail like that for so long. But that's on me for shooting lesser deer, but a guy can dream.

I let a few bucks pass last year for that reason, I want a good'un. By the time my whitetail hunt takes place, I've already put an elk and blacktail in the freezer in Oregon. Having the freezer stocked helps me pass. I've got 4 that I hope are alive this year I hope to get on cams by August 18 to see the growth. I left 15 cams in the woods this past trip, I'll add more in August once I weed through a few of these spots.

Very similar to a buck I skipped an arrow off his back last late season. Great buck! Hopefully he sticks around and you get another chance this year at him. Wa?

Yes, Wa.  Threw 6 cams at him this past week so I'll see if he shows.. I'm hoping 2 others show in a different unit.

That's excellent meat security! Keep sharing!

I am going to attempt better discipline this year but no gaurantees!

Out of 35 cams, I currently have 15 cams in 2 units located in 6 areas. I have a 7th area I'll add 2 cams to in late June on a licking branch, bears suck there lol. Of those 35 cams, I use some here in Oregon just for fun to see the elk and blacktail in areas AND for people trying to scare the elk off private land before daylight and trespassers. I'll also add 2-3 on specific spurs in the whitetail areas I hunt to see if any people are accessing them just trying to gauge hunting pressure. I ALWAYS have one on my truck or the spur to my truck in case some jack-wagon decides to F-with it.
