It's about time for a new truck. Currently driving a 2012 f150XLT that I bought new, and have absolutely loved. I'm moving up to a 3/4 ton because I frequently tow a heavy dump trailer that is at the top end of the F150's capability. My biggest concern with moving up is ride quality, but admittedly the only 3/4 tons I've owned were 1979 and 1981 Chevys, so a lot has changed! Also want gas, and the shorter bed. Would like to hear about your experience with either.
Thanks

Our work trucks are Chevy 2500 diesels in the 2015-2020 range and they’re extremely powerful but at any moment you could lose your high pressure fuel pump and get a bill for 15k not covered by warranty.
-
My kids service work truck has a Ford gasser (7.3 or .2) He said it is reliable but sucks fuel like Rosie Odonell in a buffet. Again it has a service box so a lot of weight on it all the time.
I have a 2020 Ram 2500 6.4 and use it to exclusively tow (camper, boat, utility trlr) It has a ton power. I get 15mph empty driving like a church lady. As soon as you hook a trailer 10 is it no matter how you drive. It replaced a 2012 Ram 2500 and there is zero Comparisions. The 2020 is 10000% percent better in all facets.

I’ve got the new 2500hd with the 6.6 cast block and Allison tranny. It’s a nice ride and tows very well.

I also have a new Silverado 2500HD gas, and I've been very impressed. The ride is good considering what it is, but it's definitely stiffer than a 1/2 ton. The 10 speed transmission seems to do a good job of finding the right power band all the time.

From what I'm reading it sounds like the F250 with the solid front axle is a little beefier, but provides a stiffer ride.

Have you ruled out Dodge?
Hasn't their pick up won Motor Trends Truck of the Year for like 10 years running?
-
i have a silverado 2500hd gas 6.0 as well (2008), definitely rides harsher than a 1/2 ton, but its not my daily.
im going to throw the sulastic shackles on the back...supposedly makes it ride more like a 1/2 ton.
what year/budget are you looking at getting into?
-
If you want to go down the rabbit hole, there is a channel on youtube called the fast lane truck, where they load all sorts of different year, make and model trucks and tow them up and down "Ike gauntlet" some steep mountain pass in Colorado.
Out of the gas variety at least until 2016, dodge preformed the worst, chevrolet was a dramatic step up, but at the end of the day, the fords did the best. All 3/4 tons mind you.
I will personally say. I had a 01 silverado 2500hd 6.0 v8 and loved it for the ride quality.
Then I fell into a 2012 f-250 superduty 6.2 gas and It tows SO much better than my chevrolet did, both trucks are extended cab, 4 wheel drive, short box pickups.
The ford has substantially more power, but thr ride is very harsh.
Understandably, it's not a true apples to apples comparison.
We have alot of newer 3/4ton trucks at work, chevrolets and fords, and I honestly would say if you want the ride quality go with a chevrolet, if you don't mind a stiffer riding truck, go with the Ford.

New, and no specific budget. But I have no need for a decked out truck. I'd actually prefer and and XL or XLY in the Ford or a WT or Custom in the Chevy.

Ya, I just don't have any Dodge love for whatever reason. Unless it has a 440 Six-Pack!

Whatever you get, get it with the adaptive cruise control and navigation. The new Ford F250 Super Baja edition is just out of my price range at $150K.
-
6.6 Silverado gas all day, great comfortable powerful truck.
-
Absolutely love my newer GM 6.6 gasser....
It's a beast....and rides just fine for a 7k lb truck.. wife even likes driving it...

Ha, I'll pass on that one. I'm doing OK, but I don't have White Center money!

Why aren’t you considering a diesel?

Why aren’t you considering a diesel?
No need for the additional torque, and the old days of cheap fuel and low maintenance appear to be a thing of the past.

I decided to stay away from the diesel as well. The emission regulations have taken the benefits away, the cost of fuel is more, the maintenance is more, the def, up front extra expense ect. For what I was doing the 3/4 ton gas gm was the right fit. I’ll also say that I have driven several 2&350 gas f series work trucks that pull really well but definitely don’t have the ride quality of the gm but are real work horses. I’ve always been a gm guy but admittedly they have had some engine issues lately that are quite annoying
-
I'll add my 2 cents again, and I would say if I didn't have a budget, I would do a new 6.6 gas 2500hd gmc
-
What is really comes down to is this, if you want to drive it,buy the Ford, if you want to push it, buy the Chevy.

Well that's not true, our f series work trucks spend plenty of time in the shop trust me.
-
They all ride really nice now adays compared to the past. I’ve always been a ford guy, currently in a 2012 f250 with a 6.7 diesel 275k miles and it honestly rides really nice and drives straight down the road. The new fords are even better. One thing to think about, when you look at fleet trucks, work trucks, hot shot haulers…. They’re mostly fords, 2nd is dodge. Yes there is plenty of GM but you see far more fords and it’s for good reason. My buddy’s work runs a big fleet of flatbed diesel trucks, they’re all in fords now because they had constant problems with the Chevys. Drive train and front ends.
-
When ford moved away from the 7.3 they drug their followers through hell for a lot of years
-
I’ve driven/owmed/used as work trucks dodge Chevy and ford. Other than the 6.0 ford diesels I’ve not hated any of them. I’ve pretty much liked them all, and loved a few. It would honestly come down to who has the best price for me, or looking for continuity in my “fleet”. I’d go gas for sure unless you are towing a lot and heavy. I’ve been super surprised at what towing has been with a couple Chevy gassers around the farm and can’t say I’ve complained about the one ford gas truck I have either.
Consider a flatbed too, once I got into that I was surprised how I’ve literally never missed the sides of the bed. I’ve got stake sides on one but I think I’ll be going flatbed from here on out.

I think you have to define ride quality.
Ford super duty’s are stiff, but they ride really nice. Just avoid the potholes and speed bumps. You probably don’t need to worry about “max” tow capacity in any of them so I’d focus on F250 or a GM 2500 truck. You won’t need a 1 ton and you’ll get a little better ride out of either one that way.
If it’s not going to be your daily driver I’d go gas too, but going gas with a daily driver is going to hit you in the wallet with gas. The Ford gas 7.3 engine is a beast and a great engine but it’s single digit gas mileage. Going diesel with a daily driver will hit you in the wallet harder with the combination of maintenance costs and low teens mpg’s.
I’ll throw a cog in your wheel and say that if your trailer is currently hitting the max weight capacity of your existing truck and you only tow that trailer once in a while, maybe take a hard look at a newer F150 with the Ecoboost and the max tow package. Super crew with 6.5’ bed and the right other options will give you 13k tow capacity. Buying a super duty type truck to tow a heavy trailer once in a while maybe is overkill and will cost more than it’ll help.
Feel free to stop by anytime if you want to drive something.
-
Gmc just issued a massive recall and stop sale order on 1 or 2 of their v8 engines. Can't remember what engine it was. Make sure you look into that.

Towing the dump trailer will be a multiple time a week event once I retire. It will be a daily driver, but not a lot of miles.

A good friend of mine had the chevy 2500 w/ 6.6 gas & he loved it. A tree fell on it in your big windstorm this winter & he replaced it w/ a new GMC w/ the gasser in it & he loves this one, too. He hauls his 28’ travel trailer all over the NW corner of the country with it, all the way to Wyoming.

Picked up a new 2500HD Wednesday. Basic truck (Custom) with the right options. 6.6 gas. Just drove it to Sequim and it's a nice ride. Still need to get a canopy. Time for it to get dirty and do truck stuff.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250517/48b80199587fbe66a5c624c25af6d769.jpg)

Thanks. I think it'll be good. Crazy how big/ tall these things are nowadays. Will haul some horse manure tomorrow and report back. :chuckle:

I have the same in 2021. It is a little hard to see over the hood right in front and I put step sides on it. Tows trailers campers and boats like a champ. Was getting 17 mpg to Montana.

Sweet good choice. Mine is almost identical. Wait till you price new canopies :chuckle:

For about $100 bucks you can get the rear wheel well liners, easy install and really help to contain all the junk for easy cleanup.
