If anybody is looking for the backdoor to Utah’s draw, go to the points and previous license purchases page, there is a tab there that says letters, click on that tab and you should be able to see results letters there. Appears I’ll be hunting general muzzy deer in Utah this year

backdoor was not kind to me this morning.......maybe now that they are down there is a chance for better results when the front door opens lol.
I suspect quite a bit of point creep as there was one tag I should have drawn.

I had a muzzleloader pronghorn tag this morning when it was showing

Results are up! Bunch of U succ for me…

Wife drew 1 of 2 of the random San Juan mule deer tags . Her odds were .175% :IBCOOL: 26 pt unit last year. Researching begins as I know nothing of this unit

Have you hunted the La Sal unit before? If you have the muzzy tag be prepared for a crowd, just as crowded as the modern rifle hunt.

Compared to Idaho unit 39 muleys? How’s the crowd?

The actual huntable area in the unit is squeezed in between 3 cwmu units. I'm not familiar with the Idaho unit but muzzy hunting in Utah is way more popular than Washington. You'll find virtually every road very busy. That area was hit very hard with cwd and is also a very popular area with the assorted Moab crowd. Don't be surprised if you pass bicyclists off and on all day. Hunting is fairly high, around 8000 ft+ so be prepared to take a day or two climatize.

I'm confused, looks like a fairly large unit on paper with +/- 200 muzz permits. How is the hunting pressure so high? I get rec pressure in that area but for a general season I can't see this being terrible what am I missing?

I think you'll find the actual huntable area to be fairly small. Most of the decent country is along the Taylor flats area along pine ridge. Area is kinda ringed with roads so it's difficult to find an area where you can get away. Their so called conservation programs in the area actually wiped out acres of public ground habitat and left the prime habitat in the cwmu units. You'll find that 200 permit holders will balloon to a lot people as it's popular in Utah to bring the family and friends along camping and seems everyone of them has a quad or side by side. Don't know if you'll be taking an orv but they require a permit to use in Utah. Hunted that area for years before cwd decimated the herd and you saw more quads than deer. Hope things have improved - it's an incredible area and I'm sure you'll be impressed

How are the big mountain basins at 10k plus for deer up there in late September? Still be a few big boys hanging up high?

Could be. Not much easy access as most of the routes go thru private property. Know of one route up but you've got a be mtn goat to take it. Most of the good holding areas are on the cwmus. That area can get really nasty in late September, not unusual for snow up high. Those dusty roads can turn into slippery mtn mud very quickly. That unit used to have several hundred permits, the fact it's down to 200 tells you something. It was closed to 5 days of hunting for a few years as they tried to help it recover from the cwd. Several units in Utah have far fewer permits these days based upon low census numbers. Kind good to look back to get an idea of what the f&g people are seeing before applying
