So drew this moose tag. Excited to get over there and start some scouting. Got too many spots I need to try and check out already. I am curious if anyone knows someone or has horses or mules that would be able to help pack out if needed for either money or some meat if I am so lucky? Strong backs could be welcome also. Trying to find some resources close by in case I can’t always have someone hunting with me. Since I’ve heard moose come in one size HEAVY!!
-
Congrats on the draw!!! Tons of info on that unit on here, lots of guys have had that tag. Smart move trying to line up resources ahead of time, until you have had a moose on the ground you don't realize just how big they really are.
Maybe stick around and share some stuff about yourself and past successful pics, you might meet a few guys and I'm sure there are guys who would love to help out, this is a great community that way for those who are active on here.
-
I also have the tag and depending on where/when you kill one, I could likely help you pack it out.
-
I would always pack for moose meat.

I will be back and forth over there as I have family in Spokane. Hit me up and if I am around I will help out. I am sure my brother would do it as well and he lives on the North side of Spokane.

I’m not big on posting things and whatnot mostly the wife’s ball game. I like archery elk hunting is my go to, but do muzzy and modern Deer, elk, bear.. got um. Moose not yet but hopefully this is the yea.ill try and post my best archery elk pic with this.
-
Another archery bull
-
Nice bulls, congrats on them, and the moose draw. Enjoy every minute of it, the planning/scouting is just as much fun as the actual hunting.
PS, how long are your arrows in the 2nd pic? Prolly just angle/perspective, but they look loooooooooong. :dunno:
-
I live in the area. Don't have horses but I can help pack if I'm around. Just shoot me a PM.
-
Moose are not difficult to pack. As long as you kill them close to the road.

true fact!

Capstan winch is a life saver.
We drug this bull 1400 ft around three turns to get it close to a truck.

I have the 49* North early bull moose tag as well. You can hit me up if you need some assistance, my plan is to spend about 20 day maybe more if need or until I get a moose down. I live about an hour away from the ski resort
-
Looks like about half the tag holders are on here. I have the tag as well. Plan on being over there as much as work will allow. Always willing to help. Will hopefully have some extra hands with me that could also be of assistance.
-
I’ve packed plenty of elk. I know they are a bit heavier than elk. Yeah if your close to road and I had one other person I wouldn’t be calling for help, but I don’t want to limit myself to only places I can drive or being close to the road. I’ve used cable before and always did want a chainsaw winch like look might be used in one of the posts, but even with those if your miles in won’t be help much. There’s spots i know I’ll be in few miles from nearest drive to road access. I’m in shape and wouldn’t be asking for any help on something easy, but more people can make a hard job a bit easier.
-
FWIW..... I would not want to be packing moose parts for miles. They are considerably bigger than an elk. IMHO, you will regret shooting one "miles away from a road"
I killed one in 13, was 100 yards from the truck where it died, still took me 5 hours to get it all in the truck.
:twocents:
-
22 ish hours from the first trigger squeeze to everything in the bed of the pickup. I want to say we were right at a mile and a quarter.
-
My goal is to try and kill a bull as close to the road as possible but I am for sure not putting a limit on how far I will go looking for a bull if I have to. I train year around and also have some buddies that will be with me here and there to help. Even solo, if it takes me two days and 10 trips, I will get it done. Its just one step at a time.
-
It’s truly not as bad as everyone makes it out to be mine was just over a mile from the road on a steep brushy slope I had my 2 sons with me and it was raining only took 3 hours including caping pictures and the excitement of it all 4 quarter packs to boned meat packs at the head and cape so 7 packs total shoot them where you find them then worry about it I would of honestly had no problem shooting one on the road but actually preferred the experience of finding a bull farther off and having to grind a bit
-
How’s everyone’s scouting going for the early hunt? Seems like lots of forum members pulled this tag this year.
-
Covered a lot of ground. Saw fresh sign, saw old sign. Saw a ton of huckleberry pickers. Have not laid eyes on a moose, but as everyone says, don't expect too in the heat. Getting excited. Just over 4 weeks to go. Just curious if anyone knows where one might be able to hang one if successful? Rather process myself but with all the new cwd stipulations, trying to have a plan in place.
-
A mature moose is a big animal. Been on two hunts here in Washington. 1st moose was a 3 year old. 2nd was 8. Crazy how much bigger the mature bull was. Both were shot from the road and brought out while. At camp hung and quartered. I was hoping to get one back In a ways. Packing to me is the best part! Wouldn’t bother me if it were 5 miles from the road.
-
12 days away from the opener. How is everyone feeling?
-
My son’s tag is for across the highway, i can’t believe how quick it got here. We’ve been doing tons to prepare and been on six scouting trips now. Have a camp trailer full of supplies stored at a guys place over there already and will be bringing the rest of camp over a few days before season. We Have not seen the one yet, but we have got pictures of a couple from other people that would be worth catching up to. I’m definitely feeling more pressure trying to get my son a decent one than I felt when I had the tag. Hopefully he’s not feeling any of that.

I understand the pressure and I feel like it is kind of normal with OIL tags because you know how rare they are to draw and its your one chance at it. Part of me wants to have lots of encounters and get to fully enjoy the experience but another part of me would love to kill one opening morning and take the pressure off

wait for a good one. I was at Idaho fish and game office Wednesday and Thursday. Saw the gal check 3 bull moose. All were very small. Like paddles not much larger than you hands.
-
Headed out tonight to hopefully tie one to a tree tomorrow. Forecast is looking good with off and on drizzle the next few days and dropping close to freezing overnight this weekend. Good luck to all the other tag holders.
-
Hunt of a lifetime
Enjoy
Good luck
Hope you get one 🍀🍀🍀

I agree wait for a bull that you will be happy looking at the rest of your life. Don't shoot something small the first day just because its an OIL tag. Take whatever time you have to get something you will be happy with. Took me a couple of trips to find my bull(even with 6 month old twins at home). At the time it caused a little stress on the homefront but over time that has long since faded and everyday I get to look at the bull I had dreamed of getting. Still plenty of nice bulls in that unit, time to go find one!!!!

:yeah: I drew with a buddy on my bull moose tag, he killed the first bull I called in for him, prob a 1.5-2,5 year old dink. He regrets it every time he looks at it. Mostly regrets it because I killed a good bull 8 days later.
-
Shoot what will make you happy. I personally like to eat them, more than I like to look at them. I usually set a date in my mind that says, any legal animal when hunting OIL or guided hunts out of state. What hurts worse than looking at a small bull.....is looking at an unnotched tag of a once in a lifetime hunt. I cherish and remember all hunts equally....regardless of the size of the animal. Heck, some of my most memorable hunts are of the smaller animals.
Good luck to all the lucky tag holders. Moose hunting is one of my all time favorite hunts.

This is where I am at. I very much want and look forward to a freezer full of moose meat. My plan going in is to just trust the first instinct I have when an opportunity presents itself and if the bull/encounter gets me excited, I will send it.
-
Excited for all the moose hunters, there just isn't nothing like it. One day we say about 4 different bulls and they were getting each other wound up, the size of them is really surreal. Was even chased out of the woods by a bull one time, exciting but way too close for comfort. Best of luck and take it all in.

I have to work tell Friday. Once I get home jumping in the truck and headed to camp, fortunate enough to have my son-in-law setting up camp for me. I will keep y'all posted

One big bull hit the dirt today in this unit......plenty more out there I'm sure.

Any moose is a good moose. Let’s see it!!! We have 11 moose kills in our party of hunting over the years…..yeah, some are bigger than others….but we celebrated them all equally. Great eats and great memories are made in moose camp.

I agree. I’m sure the shooter will post pics and a write up soon, maybe. I was just an observer twiddling my thumbs in the background.
