I'm concerned about the heat in August as well. I'll be hunting about 45 mins from my house, and will be nore more than a mile from my truck. How long do I need to get it on ice? should I field dress immediately?

Sharp knife
If your trying to do a rug.
Sometimes it's better to do the diagram cuts first.
Then try to do long straight cuts, without starting and stopping a lot.
That's how I do it ,seems like if I stop a lot .
I get jagged edges on my hide.
Sharp knife will allow you to make the diagram cuts in one long cut without stopping.

Carry a cooler with frozen 1 gal water bottles in your truck they last longer. Carry a small tarp in your truck too.
It helps to skin if you can elevate on a log or tailgate. Once to get skin off spread frozen bottles around meat on tarp. If you can elevate meat for air great.
Cool,clean, dry.
At nearest point grab more bags of ice and surround meat.

Does anyone have good resources for me to look at that teaches very simple bear field dressing for a first-timer that will be doing it alone. I want to preserve the hide for a mounted rug.

Go give black river taxidermy a follow on FB and looks at his diagrams. He also does some videos.
