Grouse?
What am I missing?

trolling...

Missing? I went grouse hunting today since it's opening day for grouse season and didn't see any. Not sure how that's confusing.

Ok, I am confused, so I thought maybe an emergency regulation came out, nope, sept 15 is the opener unless you have privileges

It's like hunting with Murphy's Law as your partner. A lot often doesn't go as planned. When the dog is pushing brush and the hawk is following the dog for flushed game it really can be something to see. Sort of like watching cattle dogs working. The rest of the time it's "Now where's the dog going? He's pushing something, where's the hawk? No! It's a skunk!"

What breed of dog do you use to flush game for your hawk?

Two dogs actually either together or singles. One's a beagle. The other a 3-way cross of Beagle, Dachshund, and Jagdterrier. While I love the Beagle, the cross is smaller and gets deeper into heavy brush. Either on a good day will push game.
