2025 deer, Let's see em! I've started this thread 2 years in a row now with my archery bucks from the first 2 days but not bow hunting this year so I won't be the first! I figured I'd start the thread anyways, so let's see those deer!
-
Brother , I was waiting for you to get this started. But with a deer harvest. I think your slacking this year. Haha.
-
I was hoping to see an opening day buck on here.
-
Saw a pig of a mule deer shot outside Loop Loop Pass today. Don’t want to post it, hoping it’s someone on here.
-
:peep:
-
Wife kept threatening to stick this one yesterday morning as she's convinced it's the one causing hate and discontent with her flowers. I finally ran her off for her own good. As long as she's cleaning the dropped plums under this tree she's good with me as it keeps the hornets away

Happy wife, happy life :chuckle:

Your wife is correct, fence them out and you will be amazed what grows!!!

Very typical, looking for something special or just not ready to be done?

Good choice, it will look way better after its rubbed out anyway.

It's not just your phone. I only post from my computer and about half of my pictures do the same thing. BUT, they are pictures I TOOK on my phone. I think it might have to do with the way the picture is oriented (portrait, as opposed to landscape) when you take it on a phone. The only thing I have figured is that if you download the photo and crop it until it appears in landscape (meaning that it is longer side-to-side than it is tall), it posts correctly. Not all pictures can be cropped like that though. Drives me nuts. :bash:

I think you are correct. I post photos all the time here no issue. But last night I had some grouse photos on my other IPad and when I posted they were turned.
I edited the photo on my iPad and turned it. That did the trick for me.
Good luck and congrats to OP on that deer.

Hey Hey! Danewb got 'er done! 3x1 Buck!
2nd season, with a Bear Cruzer G2 & Magnus Black Hornets
9 days into the season, hunted 7 of those, morning & eves...9 miles of hiking getting in 'n out of my hides.
Damn thing ended up less than a 1/4mi from home next to my access road. The wife brought the jeep 'n trailer up and we gutted it and loaded it up...didn't even have to pack it out!!
Bucket list checked!

2025 opening day Muzzy buck.
Dandy buck!
-
Took me three days, but I'm thrilled to have tagged this buck yesterday. Solo, OTC, public land. After getting skunked last year and being completely out of venison, this is a big relief. Huge shout out to my husband for leaving work and helping me with the brutal pack out. I'd probably still be out there without his help :chuckle: PTL!

Muzzy loaders are getting it done, nice job everyone.👍

I want to move there so bad! But my 7 kids, 20 grandkids, my mom, mother in law, My 8 other siblings and there families, and my wife's 7 siblings and their families all live here so it wont happen anytime soon I am sure!!! Property taxes are getting so high here that it wont be long and they will be taking our homes even though they are already paid for!!! Gas was $2.90 in Evanston compared to $4.30 here! Crazy! Side note, we also got a cow elk yesterday morning right before we drove home so that will put some nice meat in the freezer!
-
Great bucks so far all! Congrats!
My 2025 Wa muzzy buck.

Great buck Buddy!!
-
Not a big buck but I am happy with it. Been a struggle to find a buck hereabouts in recent years so I made my mind up I was not going to pass on anything.
Maybe 8:30 Saturday morning. I forgot my shooting sticks so had to offhand about a 100-yard head shot. The shaky old man devil looked the other way for an instant.
Probably about 10-miles of biking in the day before it was loaded in the PU. Good and tired! By the way three points on one side even though it looks like a spike,2x3. :chuckle:
-
Good job Bruce ! Good eats

I took my twins out this weekend for their first hunting season.

My 12 year old drew an antlerless permit this year. He shot this big doe around 8:30 this morning. His second deer. Still trying to get my youngest son on his first deer.

Daughter got it done tonight in North Idaho. Got her first buck at 11. Down hill 100 yard shot, bedded and quartered towards her. It jumped up and bolted downhill about 60 yards, 140 grain boattails, 7mm/08 in Youth Ruger M77.

Nice bucks everyone. Love to see the kids get bucks

Little Pathfinder had a baseball game Saturday morning in La Grande, finished his game, packed up his truck and bombed home for opening day. Made it just in time for an evening hunt. A mile from the truck this guy just popped up out of nowhere. Grass was too tall for the bipods, so he threw the rifle on my shoulder as a rest and a second later he was done. One of the better bucks we've killed out there.

The kids are doing work! Congrats to everyone that has had a successful season so far.

First kill from a treestand. Man what a different experience. Wind was perfect, I was perched near his bedroom. Saw him at 25 yards in the brush (right when I was getting ready to get out of the tree cause last night's chili was screaming to come out just like it went in) :chuckle: he slowly picked his way towards me without a care in the world. Got to 10 yards before he gave me a good shot. Could have punched a shoulder sooner, but with having time, I wanted to avoid damaging any more meat than necessary. Gave me a broadside, close leg forward shot. Both lungs and heart. Stumbled 10 yards and fell.

After 2 miserable days of high wind and rain, a few close calls but no luck, today was a beautiful morning. We spotted 2 bucks coming over the ridge onto property we could hunt. We were roughly 1000 yard away. We put the spotter on them and saw one 4x4 and one 2x2 who was equally as big. Perfect, one daughter has an any deer permit. We make our way across the draw and up to them. When we got there we found no bucks, and a big coyote standing right where they were. We had no way to know where they had gone but I guessed the continued on the same path as a few does we had seen farther to the east. We hiked up the ridge to find nothing. We continued on and I decided to peek over the ridge while my daughter was putting her jacket back on and there they were 200 yards below me with a bunch of does. I ran up to my girls and got them and we snuck down and setup. The big buck saw me before I could get a range but I knew they weren’t far enough away we needed to dial. They started nervous walking away and the 4pt got in the middle of the herd with no shot. Eventually he found his way to the back and broadside. She touched off the 6.5 PRC and down he went! I yelled at my oldest daughter to get on the gun and make the 2x2 but they went over a small rise and we could only see his head. By then they jumped the fence into property we couldn’t hunt, but we had one buck down! 12 years old as Rylees second buck, third deer! Nice work! I haven’t spent much time in a tree stand. I seem to lack the patience to sit in one spot very long. If I’m predator calling I’m good for an hour or so at a time, but it’s hard for me to sit and wait for deer.
Way to go!

A little late posting, 1st legal buck I came across that would hold still early in the archery season. I love the late season but am not sure I was going to be able to pull the time off, so just happy to fill the tag.
First year using Grim Reapers and was super impressed!

I got my deer (1st in velvet!) on the second day of ML season, stalked into 35 yards. My girls drew doe permits so my older daughter made a perfect 100 yard shot on hers opening day and it left a massive blood trail for 30 yards. On Monday my younger daughter stuck it out in the wind and rain with her mom and I to shoot her doe in a different area at 158 yards, her first. Then yesterday morning I went out with my wife to a new area. I was not confident we'd see anything, but after only 30 min in the morning we went over a hill to check a little pocket and found her buck with a doe and spike. They spooked but she got him down! Happy that the freezer will be full for a little while!
-
A true Family Affair! Great job all around.

Congrats on a full freezer!

I am always eager to hear the stories from archery hunts in WA - was this from a tree stand? Still hunt? Spot and stalk?

Kinda funny story, It was spot and stalk in open timber.... he busted me putting the moves on him at 116yds but he kept looking back over his shoulder so I froze and was hoping his dad was hanging around :chuckle:
Well, a big ole black moo cow came out of the brush and the buck all of the sudden was way more interested in that than he was with me. I hustled up to 55yds, still very much undecided if I wanted to take him or not, then he moved into the sun, perfectly broadside... I decided to just take a look through the sights, still not 100% sure I wanted to be done, well next thing I know the arrow was on it's way... he went about 200yds, pretty easy track.

This buck showed up at 6:10 and was giving a scotch broom bush everything he had.

HECK YA!
-
Got my buck around 8 am , second deer tag Miley doe about 930. Headed home by 10. Best Friday I have had in years.
-
After passing multiple does and small bucks last weekend and dealing with the crazy wind, my oldest and I set out to deal with more crazy wind again today and see if we could fill her any deer permit. Found a couple bucks and got into position and it just didn’t work out, was heartbreaking to say the least and there were some tears shed, and I realized as a father with this kid I have to work extra hard on preparing for the season. With talk of just heading home I spotted a whitetail doe bedded in a perfect spot for a stalk. She was unsure if she wanted to even try a shot but I talked her into it. We got 107 yards away and I got her settled in and more confident. I talked her through the shot and taking her time. She touched off and I knew the deer was dead. Perfect heart shot. She went about 20 yards and piled up! Payton is 14 and this is her 8th deer.

@ljsommer It absolutely is! A Weatherby that I bought my middle son for his forever deer rifle.... It happened to be in the safe, so I took it instead of my trusty Model 70, which looks worn out and tired but still shoots great.

Got my first buck on opening morning. I am self taught and mostly hunt solo, so it was a big moment for me. Shot it offhand with my lever action 44 mag from a treestand. So exciting to see years of determination and hard work finally turn into success. Ill be honest, had a hard time getting out of bed that morning since I heard a lot about the EHD in my area, but sure glad I did.

Got this nice 3 pt. Mulie at.about 830 opening morning. Looked for him for about 40 minutes before I discovered I rolled him into a tree well! LoL!
-
I drew a good Idaho tag, went hunting for mule deer in the snake river breaks. I know some people might shake their head at the deer i decided on ‘cause I KNOW there’s some bigger ones in there :chuckle: but I was really happy about this one. I hiked 15 difficult miles in 2.5 days, not a giant but I WORKED for this one. I know I could have held out for a bigger one but I don’t care, I’m super stoked about it! Also, my kids are a little extra difficult so after a few days gone a guy gets to feelin guilty about being away from the wife and kids. I texted my wife all the details, after all the niceties she said she’s going hunting (here in Wa) in the morning whether anyone else goes or not! So I quartered the deer up, hiked him back to my truck, headed to camp, slept good, next morning broke camp and on the way home headed to my favorite breakfast spot in Lewiston. While I was eating, I got a text from my wife, just a picture of her and a blacktail :yike: the biggest blacktail either of us have ever been lucky enough to get and I couldn’t be more proud of her! Here they are

Awesome!

My son shot this Muley this morning. Also, first time having my daughter tag along on a hunt.

Little Washington buck my son in law got with grandson Porky! Not big enough for me but I am old and picky! Porky was happy!

My wife got her biggest buck to date! She’s super stoked about it. 369 yards. Absolutely hammered him.

Another young lady with a buck, this is my youngest with her first deer. She was able to work her way up to shooting a legal caliber for big game this year and wanted to follow in her sister’s footsteps. I am one proud dad.

-
Another young lady with a buck, this is my youngest with her first deer. She was able to work her way up to shooting a legal caliber for big game this year and wanted to follow in her sister’s footsteps. I am one proud dad.
Right on, congratulations to both of you.

That’s fantastic lewy! First of many. Good job dad!

I really like seeing all the kids being successful! Having hunted alone a lot, and now hunting with my son the past 3 seasons, I can honestly say I’m way happier helping him get a deer and seeing him be successful than just getting a deer on my own!

Goodness that's a beast! Congratulations to your son!

Great deer all 👍

My son was able to make a great shot on this buck at 150 yards! This is his second deer at 11 years old and the suppressor has been a game changer! He took this with a 165 grain 30-06 accubond with a clean passthrough.
-
@rmadsen Congrats to the young hunter! Can you explain how the suppressor has been a game changer? FWIW, I am suppressor stupid, never even seen one in person.
-

I would 10/10 not recommend shooting one until you are ready to spend the money to get one and have a gun that will host it. They totally change the shooting experience:
It's hearing safe to shoot without ear pro and if you wear ear pro it sounds like you're shooting a pellet gun.
They reduce the felt recoil by a bunch and the perceived recoil by an insane amount (since there is no muzzle blast).
The added weight at the end of the barrel changes the balance of the gun- reduces muzzle rise and helps keep your sight picture between shots.
Because your ears aren't ringing and your brain is not in shock you can hear the impact on the animal and know if you made a positive hit.
I think if everyone shot rifles from day one with suppressors, basically nobody would develop flinches. It takes shooting a high powered rifle from a somewhat intimidating experience to a very pleasant and fun one. I would have never really been into shooting steel recreationally with a 300 WM until it was suppressed.
I know I wasn't the first one to make the comment, but hopefully that helps. Maybe he will chime in with other reasons it has helped.
-
Road my ebike 2.5m to a clearcut and sat this a.m. heard a shot about 8:30 from the timber behind me maybe close but not close kinda. I decided around 9 to leave the clearcut head down to the bottom and follow the road that looped back towards the area I heard the shot. I figured with the wind and rain I might catch deer in the road. Didn't even make it a mile and I saw this guy crossing the road in some good timber. I stopped and glasses to make sure it was a shooter and didn't even get off my bike. Pulled the rifle out of my gun bearer and shot him off hand at 150ish yards still straddling my bike. He nose dived into the brush and flopped right back out in the road. Ran into the folks that shot earlier when I was almost back to the truck. They were on there last trip of 2 packing meat. The 11yo son shot a nice 2 point. After we compared notes we figure bith bucks were shot within 2 or 300 yards of each other.
-
Congrats!! Nice buck!!
-
@rmadsen Congrats to the young hunter! Can you explain how the suppressor has been a game changer? FWIW, I am suppressor stupid, never even seen one in person.
@brokentrail, Dark2Dark did a great job summarizing. For a youth hunter, having a good shooting experience will make or break whether or not they stick with it or not. My kiddos have been spoiled as I set up a 6.5PRC with a suppressor for them out the gate and as a result they both are great marksmen and love to shoot (we had to switch to my 30-06 last minute due to a trigger issue on that rifle). I honestly think the recoil reduction is just as important as the noise reduction. Being able to be sitting there with my son communicating to him every step of the way knowing that neither of our ears were going to get blow out when he pulled the trigger was huge. He had some buck fever going and I was able to get him to calm his breathing with coaching and he made a great shot. If he had hearing pro on I don't know that we would have had the same outcome. Yes, a can is expensive, but it should last forever and it's made shooting my 300 win mag a lot more enjoyable!

Got it. Ty both!

There has been some good general season deer so far getting excited to see what the quality tag holders find!

Found this guy chasing a doe and spike. Tarsals and neck fully activated. Finally got to break in the savage .243! 100gr federal power shock and he got about 60 yards before piling up. Day 14 of the season for me

Wow, what a great buck!

Thanks everyone! It has been a blessing!I never expected to shoot a buck like this. Let alone on public land. Been seeing a lot of pressure since the start and did not see much activity until this last weekend. Grateful for all the people that helped make it happen! Taxidermist said it’s a phenomenal buck hope to take it down to the sportsman’s show and get it scored

My daughter's 2nd buck. She had very limited time because of volleyball and still passed on 3 small spikes before deciding this one would do on Sunday. 60 yards freehand shot, dumped him.

My son was able to get in done today. Was absolutely pouring down rain the whole time but he decided he wanted to hike in to his favorite spot. This guy jumped out right in front of us at about 25yrds and my sons shot him with his 7mm-08 freehand right in the brisket. Piled up right there and we got the fun quartering and pack out while taking a shower. His 3rd deer in this spot in the last 4 yrs. All within about a mile of each other. Congrats to all others in here especially the youth hunters!!!

Awesome job! Way to stick it out and get it done!
I hunted about 6 hrs today with my youngest son, trying to get him on his first deer, didn’t see anything.
My older boy got his deer the day after opening day. Similar story, quartering it out in the rain and ending up absolutely soaked!🤣

You would have to admit something odd is going on with that buck.

I know you know this area, I've never seen a buck with any Muley in it anywhere close to this area this buck was taken. Over the years I've had a handful of giant framed BT on cam that were true blacktail in my opinion, extremely rare but they do exist. This was the first time I've hung a tag on one of those. Other than a big frame it was as BT in every other feature as any I've taken. If I thought it was a bench I would be real upfront about it. Either way doesn't really matter to me.

I think he identified as blacktail 100%!

What a deer!

You never cease to impress. You shot an absolute stud.

Great blacktail Ryan !!

Dandy buck congrats

That is the biggest blacktail/ mules I've ever seen. Curious where it was harvested. I've seen some giant 2 points out of darlington that were mulies that got lost. Great buck an im happy for you!!

Holy jeez! Now THAT is a nice blackie!!!!

That is a silly size for a blacktail to be.

Judging by his avatar pic and this 2025 pic, he hunts steep, true old growth timber country. Not much under story in either picture just big, thick tall trees.

Congrats Ryan, that is a beast of a blacktail! The old, gnarly nontypical you killed in 2017 ignited a different level of blacktail addiction in me, I’ll spend my whole life looking for bucks of the caliber that you’re hammering year after year! That’s going to be a tough one to beat congrats

Very observant! I have questioned my sanity many times getting into that country in bad weather and deep snow. Crampons are a staple item in pack and often an ice axe and ski goggles. I cut tracks and tracked a couple bucks this year in snow as deep as 3'. Special weather combo sometimes gets them to bed up in more open timber without understory and that same combo has resulted in almost half the blacktail I've ever killed. 6 of my last 7 were in their beds when I found them.

I'm nearly 100% certain he's 4.5, so I'd say in his first prime year based on previous bucks I've watched grow.

I drew a late blacktail “rut tag “ with only a few days to hunt before Montana snd literally not seeing jack up in the snow yesterday I rattled this buck in and didn’t pass him , not huge but a fun hunt

That's awesome

Congrats @JakeLand! Maybe not your biggest but will still taste good. Good luck in Montana.

Kodiak Island Sitka Blacktail. :P Harvested November 2nd. Now on to late buck since I missed the last week of the regular deer rifle season in WA.

Today 11/10

Thanks all. First Sitka for me, and first time on Kodiak. I held out until late in the trip for this one. Biggest that was killed or seen. Not a lot of points to add up, but he exceeded my expectations. The bases are 7-1/4" around and the spread is 18".
Plus, I love beefy eyeguards. Had a big body and fairly worn teeth. Going to send a few in for aging and see what they say.

It was a rainy and windy Halloween in 663, I had missed most of general modern and all the stormy days prior when I kept seeing lots of people taking deer posted to Facebook groups. I didn't know stormy days brought out the boys. My daughter is too young to trick or treat so I got her some clothes from the thrift store and we went out dressed as deer hunters.

I've been hunting this property for a few years but hadn't recently seen any activity so the plan was to walk the road and hope we get the drop on a buck. Normally I sit in my blind but, that wasn't an option for still hunting this time.
We got the property about 5pm, got suited up and got to walking. Something about an extra 20+ pounds on your front will make you walk a bit slower. 3/4 of a mile in we come around a bend in the road and see black tails feeding. I got the rifle up to glass them, saw some antlers through the brush and they moved on. We crept real slow to where they were and then we saw them again in a clearing just off the road bit, maybe 40yds. The closest deer was clearly antlerless and the other one I couldn't see the top of the head because of the brush. Rifle up again and I'm moving around trying to find a window to check for antlers. Ah, yes, there's definitely a buck there. The window, with a solid shooting stance only give me the face and neck. Well I know this rifle will give me what I want at this distance so I'm taking this neck shot. PEW.
Deer move on. Buck isn't in sight. Walk over and there's the buck laying right where he previously stood. One .308 Accubond suppressed to the neck, "didn't even go 1"

Drove to a friend's house and his wife watched her while I took care of it. I had came prepared with her dinner and snacks. She did great with a new person for the first time without me. Definitely the most epic blacktail hunt I've had to date.

Congratulations to everyone, especially the kids and first timers. Thanks for sharing.
I saw 14 bucks and 2 does during general in pursuit of my target buck.
I saw him once from my stand but branches and brush foiled my opportunity as he cruised through. Late buck I was in meat mode and hadn’t seen a deer until this afternoon. I thought I was going to get tag soup. The rut appeared to be over and the deer were hiding out recovering. No fresh tracks on roads or trails. At 1:00 I let my wife know I still hadn’t seen a deer, she replied “ you still have time.” Lucky for me I did. He’s a younger buck. Didn’t smell rutty and neck hardly swollen. He was hanging with a smaller two point. My grandpa gave me his bike the year he passed. It is way too big for me but I enjoy using it during hunting season.

Super happy with this coastal blacktail. Got him an hour before dark looking into openings between 25 foot high jackfir. Battled sheets of rain and fog all day. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20251117/d11f4da175af0cb58e5b88d4c4daf4d8.jpg)

Damp and dark always looks so sweet. Love it.

Had a pretty good season. Used a new to me saddle for several hunts, saw two nice bucks but had no shot on them, both from the same tree, one morning one night. I really like to still hunt on the ground or sit on a padded stool in one spot. The Friday before Halloween with the monsoon washed me out and I missed the next day which was a good one. I was down to late season and on the second day found this big girl, as big as some bucks. I am all about meat so I have no problem taking a doe when bucks are not around. I hunt on private land on Vashon Island and that usually makes it a bit nicer, but its still no easy thing as Blacktail's are not called ghosts for nothing...
-
Stepdaughter settled for this one today

Pretty nice for a consolation buck.
