I got into my spot about an hour before light, just sat and listened for the first couple hours and heard nothing. With the early start to the season and the dry woods my plan was to just sit water for the opening weekend and get a feel for what the elk were doing. About 715 or so I hear a few far off bugles so I give a few cow calls, a little time goes by and I get another bugle but closer and I give a real light cow call. Few more minutes and I hear the unmistakable snap of a stick under an elk that we all know. I see a heavy dark rack ducking threw the branches and blow down and realize it’s a pretty good bull, he comes straight in and hits the water hole and drinks for what felt like five minutes but I have no shot, finally he picks his head up and turns to leave and I give him a little chirp, he stops and turns broadside and I let loose. Arrow felt perfect but he was a touch farther than I thought but I’m pretty sure he’s heart shot, bull blows up and takes off. I immediately give a few more cow calls to hopefully calm him down. As I’m waiting and replaying the shot another decent bull shows up. I watch him for a bit and get some pics, eventually he leaves. About ten minutes later a spike rolls up! I wait a total of an hour and a half and take up the trail, it’s raining now and the thunder is getting really close. Took the blood trail about 80 yards and there he was. Ended up hitting him perfect, heart and lungs. Pressure is off and I get to just play caller for the rest of the season!

Congrats Ivan, just a start of the killing for you guys!!

Thanks it was very emotional for me. My 24 year old son remarked recently he has never been with me I got an elk which shocked me. At my age I knew it would a challenge to make it happen. He is having wrist surgery this morning and may lose mobility in his wrist. I feel blessed to have shared this harvest with him. I was proud of the prayer he said afterwards thanking the elk and the Lord for this harvest and memory. He showed great respect.
-
Thats awesome! Glad this worked out so well for all of you! Will be praying for a successful surgery, and complete recovery for your son!
-

So far mines been the complete opposite of success >:( sick 2 + days :o, dead camper battery :bash:, and then today 6 hours of trying to fix a water system leak in 2 different parking lots :bash: :bash: :bash:.. Back home now from Grays Harbor County and will give the repair one more shot before throwing the towel in. If so, may try some local deer/ bear hikes... or fix the boat and chase some bass.
:hello: Regardless, good luck folks. Some good critters so far

Love this time of year!
Congratulations guys.

I just got back from round 2 in eastern Oregon and still have a tag in my pocket. Bulls are very nervous and not bugling much at all. You might get a few bugles out of them and that is it. Then found some fresh what appears to be wolf scat that might explain things.

Got this guy to come in to a bugle September 14 last day of my hunt. I hunted since the opener and they were quiet, and just like that after 4 years I got my first elk. The wife thinks I scratched that itch but I’m more obsessed now than I ever
-
Dandy bull! Way to stick with it and harvest your first bull. Awesome stuff!
