Title: Moose Veterans
Post by: elksnout on September 12, 2025, 10:07:42 PM
Throwing this out here to see where it lands… I drew a Colorado anterless moose tag for this fall as a nonresident. There will be just two of us on this hunt. I’ve spoken with successful Washington moose hunters who have used portable chainsaw winches. Like many of you I’d rather not purchase something I’m likely to use once (I’m getting old) and was wondering if a guy can rent one or even if someone here is interested in renting out there’s for my trip? Leaving 11/5-11/15.

Thinking a gas unit but my son found a 24V winch with extra battery but man I’m not sold on a battery unit.

Thought I’d ask. Thanks guys.

I've got a gas one, I don't use it much anymore, we usually either pack out or pull out with a long mule tape, it's less work than the chainsaw winch. You are welcome to use it on one condition, if you damage it or lose it, you fix or replace it. I'm probably right along your way to Colorado.

Hell of an offer! I absolutely would repair/replace or even offer leaving a cash deposit. This will be my first ever moose hunt and realistically my only one given poor draw odds and getting on in years. I have football games today for two of my grandkids then I’ll reach out privately. Thank you so much.

It's amazing what you can do with a 3000 foot roll of 2500 pound mule tape and a couple small snatch blocks!

👍
And with a couple two way radios so you can tell the driver when to hold up for a few seconds.
