Well yesterday was the opener, I have been putting in for 22 years and this tag has not disappointed and it was only the first day. Weather was raining, foggy and Smokey, I started the day up high at the receding snow line. Saw 4 bucks early in the morning , first one was a spike, the second one was outside the ears, he was walking away from me and barely visible in the fog, he was only 60 yards away but he gave me the slip. Then I had a goofy barely 3pt jump across the road in front of me his rack was barely above the ears. Then an absolute toad for a 2 pt stepped out w the most ridiculously jacked neck I’ve seen on a deer in person, he had a doe w him and a face that looked like attitude. Later further east in the unit saw a nice 3pt thrashing some brush on the side of the road and I’m not going to lie I was tempted but ultimately let him go. Then in the last hour of day light I had a tall deep forked 3 pt walk in front of me at 40 yards w his harem of does. I must’ve flipped my safety off and on half a dozen times. My dad was w me and reminded this was only the first day and I’ve taken a bigger buck in the general season. Fast forward 20 minutes or so and a basket buck 4pt w some broken tines from fighting and a huge 3 pt w shallow forks and short tines stepped out and I thought they were going to fight the way the snot was dripping but they never did. I’ve never passed on a legal mule deer before, today I passed on 10. What a great start to the season. Looking forward to next Saturday when I can get out.

Ha, I am sitting on 22 points and can't draw it. So leave a good one for next year in case I draw.
-
Oh the way I was sweating on the big 3 should be no problem 🤣, I’m a sucker for giant 3 pts
-
Nice! Good luck!
-
Hey Crunchy, we got you beat, all 3 in our group have 28 points! But we'll hope for the best next year all of us.
-
Awesome! Good luck.
My son drew this year, I'm still trying. We're headed over Friday to find a place to park the trailer.
We plan on being there to the end of season.
-
Good luck out there! Enjoy your hunt! Sounds like a good start!

That’s awesome! Maybe I’ll see ya around I’ll be over that weekend as well and I took the last week of the season off. I was more snooping around checking the rut activity, it’s early but saw a 3pt show a bush who was boss and did see a 2pt w a humongous neck, next weekend should be exciting! Was a little bummed that the snow line was receding but play the hand we’re dealt

Enjoy every minute of it! I could have shot a good buck on day 2, but didn't want the hunt to be over last year after waiting 19 years to draw the tag. Never saw another one as big after spending 11 days in there, but no regrets. Still got a decent buck and all the experiences each day was worth not pulling the trigger early in the hunt.

Absolutely agree! I’ve never had the opportunity to hunt mule deer in the rut before and it’s absolutely incredible. From watching that 3pt thrash a bush to a 4pt and his does going in to an apple tree and two other bucks showed up and you could cut the tension with a knife. It was incredible to watch I’m loving every moment of it, wish I could’ve gone out today

Enjoy it all!!! Where is the snow level right now?
-
Hope you find the one you like! Sounds like so much fun!

Saturday it was around 4,400’. I can’t get back out till next Saturday it’s killing me lol. Saw a nice 4pt got taken out of there yesterday
-
Its down lower now. I am up Nahahum canyon and there was snow a couple hundred feet above us this morning

Just a few inches of snow along the devils backbone last Friday. Found a few rutted up bucks, heading back over this Friday for the rest of the season. Looks like we might get some higher elevation snow this week, it’s gotta help! Good luck to everyone

Yeah it was old snow, the rain on Saturday made it squirrely going up even in 4wd. I don’t think deep snow is going to be in our favor this year unless something drastic happens quickly but that’s okay we will take what snow we can get!

Tagging to follow along!!! Good luck out there!

My son and I just got back and had a blast!!! Having trouble putting pictures on

Now that is a great set of bucks! Being that I'm old I remember when the regular season ended the first part of November and that is what many would tag!

Solid bucks.
The forks on that first buck are quite impressive.

Great bucks! Saw those on FB too. Fantastic and thank you for posting them!!
To the OP I hope to see you adding to this post real soon with a brute of your own! The glassing conditions should be about as good as it gets without snow!
-
Wow, those are a couple of really good ones!

except for no snow, what’s the good word? Headed over Thursday morning.

How’s the rut going?

The rut is out of control right now. All day long.

Well Nov 8th I ran over for the day and my vacation was the following week for over there, but then I found on the way there that was the last day I had to hunt-life happens ugh. I made the best of it, passed on some incredible bucks that morning, one for sure migratory buck 2x3 w eyeguards and probably a 28-30” spread. The bucks were chasing each other and gathering their harems and rutting hard. The weather was nice and no snow in the forecast, I passed on 15-20 bucks that day.drove between a small 3pt and his does and that sucker jumped up on the road and squared up for a second before crossing over to his does it was an incredible experience. Fast forward 1.5 hours of daylight left, I passed on a small crabby 4x4 and a wide 3x3 that was crabby. Lots of does lots of bucks. Last hour of daylight at this point I’m realizing I’m going to eat my tag lol. Then we spot a group of does and pushing them looked to be a nice buck they were on the move. Last hour of daylight I decide this is the one, I was after the experience of hunting rutting mule deer bucks and I felt fulfilled w the limited amount of time I had. I felt like I was moving pretty quickly after them as the went up a steep draw. Then I spot a deer, throw the binoculars up and I can see a deep forked 3 on one side, he was a ways out there, i ranged him at 280 yards, and he was on the move I had seconds before he would be out of sight. I throw the rifle on him standing offhand w no rest, I’m probably going to miss-he’s walking quickly now. I squeezed off and he jumped vertically at least 3 feet off the ground, and tumbled down 150 yards. It was a steep ravine and a steep angle shot I was shocked I hit him. Double lung across the heart. Perfect shot. Not the biggest mulie I’ve killed but by far my favorite

Congrats!

Nice work! It was a tough year in there without the snow. Searched high and low day after day. Plenty of deer around but just couldn’t find that next level buck. I ended up shooting a decent one towards the end, actually was the biggest buck I found all season.

Did you have a rifle tag or one of the auction / governors tags? We met a raffle tag guy in there when we were up there archery hunting......curious how he ended up doing. Real nice guy.
-
I had a rifle tag, killed my buck on the 18th. How’d the archery season go?

Seeing and shooting them in the archery season is two different things. We saw some decent bucks (nothing super huge) and I ended up killing a super old regressed buck. I’m gonna get his teeth aged but am guessing he is 8+ years old. Had to be pushing 300lbs on the hoof…..biggest bodied deer I have ever killed.
