Title: Montana Elk Last Ditch Effort
Post by: pickardjw on November 23, 2025, 05:52:08 PM
I pulled a big game combo in MT this year and tried to combine deer and elk into one trip last week. Had private access near Lincoln for two days that didn't pan out (no weather to push elk onto the property). Our plan B spot south of Missoula was also a bust. Lots of bighorn in there though. I'm thinking about spending Thanksgiving out there trying to get the tag filled, cow or bull. But now I'm starting from square one on research with this having been my first out of state elk tag.

If anyone has any suggestions on a region I should focus my now somewhat frantic research on I'd appreciate a personal message. Daunting task to get started on with a short turnaround!

The other thing to keep in mind is that Montana also has shoulder seasons that run into next year so you have about as much opportunity as any state.  The available land and strategy changes quite a bit but it's an option.  The closer to the end of the season, the more likely you are to get access to private for a cow tag on ranches that have feed laying around.

Good luck, hope you find one!
