Post by: tmike on July 05, 2009, 09:12:35 PM: I've got to tell the neighbor to quit feeding the squirrels! This won't end well if we don't keep a clean camp.

Besides putting all the garbage away and not feeding the birds or squirrels what would you suggest? The dog keeps it at bay. I thought about a paintball gun :dunno: I know it's not a good situation.

Looks like he's about 75 lbs? A good size to eat and yes he will continue to cause trouble...
..at least you can get a seccond tag. Need help on Aug 3?? :EAT:

Post by: tmike on July 05, 2009, 10:44:04 PM: I've done that in the past. They trapped one and hard released it in my back yard. That may be an option if it really truly becomes a trouble maker. The first thing they will say is put your garbage away and quit feeding the birds and squirrels. Then when Aug 1st comes around other options are available, but trapping isn't one of them. It's a young one, hopefully when the berries get ripe it will be gone. I've had lot's of offers for help with the problem :chuckle:

They seem to think there are not that many. At least that is what they will tell us when they try to take our season away next year.

We will wheel the trap into a position so it can see the house, then they will raise the gate. As the bear emerges they shoot it with bean bag loads out of shotguns, light off something like an M80, then turn Mishka the Bear dog on it. Hopefully it will get the idea this isn't a place it wants to be. They will tranquilize and ear tag it first.

how about just bring in a licensed bonded and ultimately a "good shot" hunter to take care of business?? .....no no, must waist taxpayer dollars!!!!! :bash:

Who's money is going to pay for the license/bonded shooter :dunno: If someone shot you in the ass and sicked a dog on you you might think twice about returning. I could have waited 3 weeks and taken care of it myself but I didn't feel like shooting a 75 pounder and I want to let my kids and dog go out without worrying about it.

(relocate)
as far as bringing in a shooter, that "will" happen once that bear starts becoming a threat!! remember bears are very intelligent animals, and once he's figured out "bean bags" don't kill!! let alone hurt :chuckle: he will lose his fear of man and gun

Post by: cohoho on July 09, 2009, 10:53:14 PM: Quite opposite BK Dave, I watched my F & G bud pound a couple Griz 2 year olds in similar fashion in Eagle River Ak, never returned that year. Those bean bags come out of a similar gun to the old M-79 (for all you older Military guys) in 38mm size though... They litterally knock the *censored* out of the bears with them. They didn't have the dogs like here, but what I saw worked for 350lb griz, I sure the 70lb blackie will feel it in the morning when he gets pounded.. And not want to return... Also the guys that worked for me in our Fish and Game section utilized same method for problem trash bears on Ft Richardson, something about getting thumped by a 2 lbs bean bag that kept them from returning.

On the flip side AK F & G released a collared blackie and tracked it and posted it over the internet several years ago, it actually swam across the Turnagin Arm from the Kenai Pennisula and was back in Anchorage garbage cans three days later, talk about a GPS system...

The younger the better is what I've heard. Still, I'd like to see the numbers of success. He's too little to kill. If there's a way to make him afraid of humans and not go for the easy food of bird feeders on the decks of homes, I'm all for it. One try, then relocation to a far away place where little Bears can grow up to be bigger Bears. We are encroaching on their habitat. Give the little guy a chance.

Photos, we want a slide show or video of the whole thing. Please....

They came and did the release before I got home :bash: Hopefully the neighbor got some good pictures and Yogi doesn't come back in August.
