Well I made it home alive last night trough the snow storm. 6 long hard days of hunting and no work was just what the doctor ordered. I saw lots of critters; deer, elk, turkeys. Man, if I only had a big bull tag. Anyway back to the deer hunt. I dont have time to post all the pistures right now but here are a few. The first one is a buck I passed on, just not what I was looking for. Then a few elk and turkey pictures. I will finish my story later. Thanks for reading. ;)
-
:bash:
the sooner the better please
great pics.
-
Ya, Thanks for posting. Show me the cows though!
I hope in that list of photos there is one of you and a big buck.
Thanks for sharing, thats my weekend destination.
When your posting the rest let me know if getting a 30ft trailer back to 29pines lookes feasable.
Thanks
-
Great pics and really looking forward to more. Thanks for sharing. Man I love that area up there!
-
Passing one like that hope you where successfull. Great pics.

Day 6. 3:00 pm. 2 hours till I have to pack up and head home for a few days to work. I am dragging my feet thinking of the bucks that I should have killed, yata yata. There he was, not exactly what I had hoped for, but he would be worthy of my tag. 27-28" wide, nice deep forks, long mains, tall. He would definately do. I slikenked into position. As a peeked over the little brushy hill I saw a doe had me pinned. The buck was 30 yards but walking away and I had to freeze. Finally the doe looked away I got into position to draw. The buck is at 52 yards. I am confident at 50. One small detail. A doe was lined up broadside with the buck. I can only see his spine and a slight miss smacks the doe. I know I could likely make a spinal but should I wait......
-
27-28", thats a good teanaway buck, I dont know what you were exactly striving for, sounds like all the characteristics of a tag worthy buck to me. And you're seriously going to make us wait for the rest of the story and pictures, you're killing me.

on with it!!!

I'll have to finish the story on Sunday. The stupid buck never would give me an ethical shot. I passed twice when my gut was telling me to shoot as we played cat and mouse for an hour and a half. If I had only found him a day or two sooner I would have more chances at him. The nine does with him did not help at all. I did talk the wife into letting me go back though. Pretty sure he will still be there. Hopefully round two ends with a little better luck. Sorry for the suspence to a crappy ending :chuckle:
-
At least there is an ending now! Not the one we wanted to hear though. Was expecting a success and 300"+ pic :tung:
Good luck on your trip back in.

300 inches? Man, I thought he was hunting deer. :dunno:
-
So are you seeing quite a few deer though? Is this latest buck encounter the biggest one you've seen out there? This new snow hopefully will only better your chances of encountering some biggins out there.
-
I was seeing lots of deer every day. Mostly dink 2, 3 & 4 points. The close encounter on Wednesday was the biggest buck that I got a good look at and put the sneak on. There were a few that were far far away or on the run that I really never got my glasses on. I had a heck of a time finding bucks up high. Even after the snow I couldnt hardly cut a fresh track above Beverly, Bean, Standup, Iron Creek, and other areas of similar elevation. Seems like most of the activity was already lower. I could have been missing something though because I dont think 10 inches of snow moves a big buck off of the mountain. I will give it one more go this weekend. Might have to shoot a dink so I dont eat tag soup this winter. We'll see.

We all wish!
-
That's just mean leaving people hanging like that wastickslinger. Hope you find that buck again and get a good shot at him this time.
-
I will take the bull from above!
-
Hey, I'm a lurker coming out of the closet. Sorry to hijack but the picture of the last bull made me do it. I drew the Teanaway any bull muzzleloader tag 2 years ago and I'm 90% sure that is the bull M_Ray and I chased for 8 days. That was the last time it was a rut hunt. I had him broadside at 150 yds and passed! Too far for my confidence. Any way good luck on the deer, there are some nice ones in there. Maybe some day I'll post about that hunt it was crazy.
-
Welcome tmike it's about time! Slinger nice report and pics good luck!
-
Hopefully those boys didn't get snowed in, I hear in Cle Elum they got close to 2 feet of new snow over night. I remember the one guys asking about towing a 30 ft trailer and camping at 29 pines, he may be stuck.
-
We got about 14 inches at my place near Eburg. Had a Christmas party today and a good friend from out at Lauderdale where HWY97 and 970 meet tell me that they got 26 inches of snow that started at around 8pm Saturday night. You can bet that anyone up the Teanaway was dealing with getting out.
-
We were up Weilh road yesterday all day and got out of there just in time. We were in in the morning and then went back in in the afternoon, and didn't get back to our rigs till after dark. Couldn't see our going in track, when we were coming back out. Coming back over Snoqualmie Pass was fun, but Tiger Mtn, on Hwy 18 was pretty scary actually. Hell it was almost a friggin whiteout in Maple Valley, but raining 2 miles down the road in Covington.
My buddy is a Master Hunter and has another anterless elk tag that we were trying to fill, (I was cougar hunting, since he shot one of those last weekend), and all we saw was deer.
-
That weihl road is good when the elk are in there, it seems to me either they are there or they aren't, but when they are they're all over the place. Did your buddy shoot that cat up off the weihl road?
-

Buddy of mine who lives near town says there is no way he could get that 30' trailer back in there. Too much snow at the end of last week and ifin he did get in there, he's stuck now or had to dig his way out. Pretty deep from what he's saying. Hope wastickslinger got his buck!
-
i came over blewett about 6 this morning. i have a feeling some folks might be a little late comin' home if they were very far up in the teanaway. it was pretty nasty, but begining to turn to rain. i bet its POURING rain up there now. roads will be s h i t t y comin outa there to say the least, with as much snow as they got, now with mass rain on top of it there could be some real problems. i can't imagine the hunting up there being anything more than a total bust. there is way too much snow and wind and now rain for the animals to be out moving, or let alone the hunters for that matter. oh, and good luck to the trailer guy... :o
-
Goose egg. Sorry guys, i just couldnt find the big one. Oh well I had fun and saw lots of critters and I cant say I didnt have opportunities. From the sounds of it, most of the tag holders had issues. I could have killed a cow on Saturday if I wouldnt have had a stupid west side tag this year.
-
I thought you were going to stick a small one.
-
Sorry you came up empty there. Is there any chance you could email me that picture of the 6x7 in the field? or do you have any others of him? I would appreciate that. Thanks
-
Just right click and "save picture as"
-
hey at least you had fun, and knew what you wanted, and stuck to your goal. Congrats on having a fun hunt, and getting to see all those animals.
-
Thanks for that Cougeyes.
-
On a more positive note I did fill one tag. Chrismas tree tag that is. Best part about that hunt was that is was only $5 and I road hunted. :chuckle: :chuckle:
Cougeyes- I really liked that last buck I saw. I spent the whole day looking for him the last place I saw him. I just coudn't round him up.
I do have a few more days of general archery here near home. I may still get one. Kinda burned out though.
-
Yeah I wish i were actually back home when you were there, I would have tried to locate some big bucks for you, i've never actually gone out much during this time of year to locate deer, but next year may be a different story. Well good luck, we all know getting a deer isn't everything, at least you had fun and hopefully learned some newer areas.
-
Sure did have fun. Thanks to everyone who sent me a message every now and then with tips. I sure appreciated it.
There was a monster shot in the unit with a bow. Another tag holder I spoke to saw it in the back of a truck. I guess it was a pig. Wish I could have seen it.
-
I'm really debating for next year on putting in for the rifle tag out there. I know its not the most productive unit as the Entiat and Obviously the desert, but I know that area really well. I have 8 deer points..maybe 9 not sure though. The only downside is the late rifle hunt is only 6 days out there, so if the weather is not there you may not see any migrating bucks at all. I"ll probably keep putting in for the desert in hopes of some day drawing it.
-
Thing of it is, the Teanaway has some local bucks that would challenge your heart. So far one of the biggest bucks I've seen taken this year in the state was in the general there. He's on here somewhere.
-
Yea Bighorse was the one taking the 30' trailer up to 29 pines. Haven't hear from him on how they did.
-
The 30ft trailer guy is out and back home in Bellingham just fine. Thank god for full ton trucks and a full set of chains.
I can honestly say that the big bad 7x8 elk in the photo is officially dead. I saw a guy take it with his bow. I even got the honor of handling the rack.
I won't say the score but I did get a green score from the guys........Any guess.
By the way, What is the WA state Archery record?
I was able to put the stalk on one group of cows, busted.
I also got up a trophy size bull but isn't that how it works when you can only shoot cows and spikes.
All I can say it despite the weather it was a good hunt. I saw at least a hundred deer but not a single buck. They must be worn out after the rut. With all that tail around there.
-
I will officially have a toast to grumpy. I got to know him on a personal level a few years back. :'(I'm not good at scoring but I was guessing 370 a few years ago, by the photo 350 plus? I'd love to see him in person. That's a great kill with any weapon.
-
Did he shoot that thing Saturday morning by chance?
-
I can honestly say that the big bad 7x8 elk in the photo is officially dead.
:brew: Here's a toast to grumpy :brew: He was one fine bull and a ton of fun to hunt!
-
If it is the same 7X8 I took pictures of I would say he is over 350. No very good at scoring though.
-
By the way, What is the WA state Archery record?
off of nwbiggame.com....not sure of the accuracy of the site, but it is what it is...
Washington - Rocky Mountain Elk, Typical (Archery) [maps]
1. 375 4/8 Skamania County 1990
2. 368 2/8 Kittitas County 1987
3. 344 6/8 King County 1989
4. 340 7/8 Yakima County 1986
5. 332 6/8 King County 1987
6. 331 4/8 King County 1998
7. 331 3/8 King County 1995
8. 327 4/8 Yakima County 1989
9. 316 3/8 Lewis County 1986
10. 311 1/8 Pend Oreille County 1986
-
Well if they scored it right.........416 :chuckle: :o
-
I believe that there was a bull taken out of the Teanaway several years ago that is the state record arhcery bull. I don't remember the score but I think it was 390 ish. Anybody remember this as well.
WACAT
-
When i saw the records posted on this page i thought for Kittitas county there was a bull shot a while back that was in the 390 range, maybe those people just dont turn them into the record books, who knows.
-
there's got to be lots of people that don't enter their animals into the books.
nwhunter on here killed a 370 bull this fall with his bow
-
The year before I drew the muzzleloader tag there was a bull killed that netted in the 390's, killed with a bow. Supposedly it held the world record for non typical a few days before Chuck Adams and someone else beat it. I saw the bull, the fronts were incredible. I'd have to see a few more picts of this one. It doesn't look to be a 400 bull to me. Either way congats to the hunter.
-
one of my relitives is like that, his whitetail is #3 in washington and he wasnt the one that entered it, his son did it for him. he said he could care less bout it, he also shot a record book moose last year from washington that they wanted him to enter but he doesnt want to. i should post some pics of it, its really big for a shiras
-
post up some pics of the moose for sure...and you might as well post the YT too.
start up a diifferent thread though.
-
next time im up at his place i will get pics
-
I believe that there was a bull taken out of the Teanaway several years ago that is the state record arhcery bull. I don't remember the score but I think it was 390 ish
Actually it scored 421 7/8 and netted 407 and is the WA state record and # 7 in the world for NON-TYPICAL not typical. Killed by Jeff Thorpe
-
Yeah that's the one, i thought it was in the 400's, i think it was shot in the wilderness if i wasn't mistaken, either that or above Masterson's ranch.
-
above Masterson's ranch
Supposedly not close to Mastersons.
-
well i cant call him cause he's running lion right now, but i believe it was the 49 degrees tag not for sure though
-
That doesn't look like the Thorpe bull as best as I can remember. I couldn't remember who killed it, but that a monster was killed in the Teanaway. There was an article in on the Western Magazines. That last bull is awesome though. Congrats on the recent kill as well.
-
That doesn't look like the Thorpe bull as best as I can remember
It's not ... this must be a rifle kill not archery Thorpes bull has dark choclate horns.
Here is a link to the only pic I could find when I googled it. It's from the RMEF banquet in Kittitas.
www.kittitascountyrmef.org/banquet.html
And according to the internet it scores 421 7/8 gross and 407 net non -typical which places it:
No.1 in Wa
No. 7 in the World
And I think No. 17 overall
what ever that means? Is overall between all methods Rifle Muzzle and Archery?
-
from the b/c site
green score:
Officially scored by Glenn Abbott and Sam Wilkins on 11/22/03, 430 6/8 gross, 421 7/8 net non-typ.
-
I agree there are a lot of people with book animals that don't enter them... And as m-ray and I were talking about yesterday - washington hunters seem to be more conservative about what they take and post.. I know in my household alone we have 4 animals that would be well up in the book that we haven't entered..
As for thorpe's bull.. the bottom pic and the one link googled by m-ray are the only ones of his bull.. and I thought it netted 421 and 7/8"??? Oh well, its a hell of a bull!!
-
You know I never did find a net score where I looked when I googled :dunno: but for some reason I went by a magzine that I have at home here that say's it's 407 net and # 7 for archery kills. Maybe the publication is wrong ... I don't know at any rate it's a MONSTER!
-
My archery bull this year can now be officially scored after the 60 day wait period. I had a guy green score soon after the hunt and he has it at 380 gross so I am anxious to get the official score and see where it will land in the state book . Net score should be mid 360 which would put it in the top four for sure and I will enter it. My taxidermist called a few days ago and has the cape back so I will be taking him the horns in a week or two to get it mounted up. He offered to rush the mount so I can have it for the Puyallup Horn Show. I know score doesn't mean much to most guys and to me the score is just a bonus for being lucky enough to harvest such a great bull. Scott
-
Hey you wanna post those pics up again of your bull, or at least the link to the thread you had them posted on, on here.
-
I just looked at your pics and wanted to share with you that the big bull you took a picture of out in the field. My buddy shot the week after you took that pic.
We scored him at 384P&Y.
-
Was it the same bull a guy shot who was from Elk Heights? I guess there was a write up in the local paper. I'd sure love to see it in person and get my hands on the bull I came so close to getting a few years ago. If it's the same one. I can still hear him screaming!
-
Do you have any kill pics of the 384 bull to share? Thats an awesome bull anywhere but really special for a Washington bull. Was that 384 gross or net? Scott
-
Here is a pic of the 384 bull taken in teanaway.. yes it is the same bull taken by the guy from elk heights.. He is a great guy . We have hunted many years together and he has taken lots of animals but this was his first bull.. Its all down hill from here. Ha ha
-
Tell your buddy congatulations, that's a great bull.
-
Yep a great bull for sure, tell your buddy congrats!
-
looks like hes got arrows strewn everywere.Must have been a tough bull..............
-
Thanks for the picture , great bull. If you can draw a tag this state does have some big bulls. Cougeye you can see a pic of my bull on the general discussion part of the forum under the winterkill skull subject. Scott
-
Great bull!! The last Saturday that I saw the bull in the field was right after daylight. He looked sick. I told my buddie that I bet someone at the other end of the field stuck him. We didn't stick around to see, I had a buck to chase. I guess I should have stuck around and I might have got to put my hands on him. Little did I know that the last time I saw him he was a dead bull walking.
384 sounds right. There were some 400+ numbers flying around and I thought it was a bit high. That is him for sure. Good to hear a good guy stuck him. I sure enjoyed watching him for a few weeks.
-
nice bull congrats!!!!
-
Way to go JD!! That is a great bull, I cant wait to see it mounted.
-
Great elk! Thats alot of horn!! Hope he has vaulted ceilings!! Did he get him on Private or public land?
-
Did you draw the regular any bull tag or teanaway ranch landowner tag?????
-
First off the guy in the 30 ft trailer. I am glad you got out sorry we could not stick around longer to help. Also JD would like to know who whackem is?
He drew a any bull tag for that unit. but the bull was shot on private land but with a little sweet talking by Jd he got permission.
-
I remeber 3 years ago on my way to entiat for late archery .We saw 7 bulls in that field under the powerline area past the teanaway river road.None was smaller then a 5x6 the biggist was a 7x9 monster that had about 5-8 feet of some wire of some kind hanging off his rack.I about sh$t myself when i saw that herd. Not a cow anywere to be seen......Is that the ranch that has the landowner permits???? I havnt seen elk in there since
-
Tremendous Bull! tell your friend Congrats. Hey tmike if it isn't fatty it's his gene pool ... ya think?
-
Ya, I was glad he got that trailer out! I'm suprised my old Jeep was able to help at all in that situation.
I got close to a large bull in the woods behind where we got the trailer stuck the next day. Two of em actually but only got to get close to one the other crossed the fences into property I didn't have permission on. Of course thats how it works when you have a cow tag. I never did find another cow after Friday. I acctually skied back in there.
Thanks for stopping to help.
I'll be throwing my name in the hat for that unit next year and many after that. Its got potential.
-
Hey guys, Im the one that shot that big bull in teanaway, thats the second time ive ever been drawn for a big bull, I also shot a monster buck in the same unit ....Must be my year
-
Awesome Buck! I love that mass! You really are having a great year!
Congratulations!!!!
-
roughyeye looks like you got a bit of a taxidermy bill this year! Nice buck too Congrats on both.
-
Thanx we saw some big bucks this year, must have been a good year for horn growth I also saw another huge bull in the early season 7-8 but couldnt find him after rifle season hmmm
-
Are you guys saying that bull scores 384? I must not have a good read on it. That seems way high.
-
gross score is 384
-
rougheye check your pm's if you don't mind. I had a few questions.
384 gross sounds right to me. Nice Bull!!
-
Here u go mray
-
I'd go into debt for that taxidermy bill any day! :)
Congratulations! On both the elk and the whopper of a buck...
Regards, Guy
-
heres another one
-
That's gunna look great on your wall! Are you going to mount the deer also?
-
yes but i dont know where to put him yet
-
I'm glad someone had the honor to harvest this bull. His seed is still alive and well. You know those images that are burned in your memory from being in the field? I have that with this Bull or at least his twin. After several days of trying to get on him I had him ranged at 150yds, broadside with my muzzleloader. He was real close to some private land so I wasn't going to shoot, not yet. (please don't tell me you can drive tacks with open sites at 150yds with your ML) He would sit there with his 20 cows, belly hanging low, screaming to let everyone know who had kicked their asses. While set up, I had a spike and a 5 point feed 40yds through my lane. The 5 point is feeding towards this bull and I'm thinking, perfect, when he runs the 5 point down the hill he is mine. Not! He could care less about the 5 point and never moved. After what seemed like an eternity a tuft of wind hit the back of my neck and I knew it would be over soon. As happens one of the cows comes to full alert, barks, and takes the herd with her into the private. Fatty was the last one gone. That's one of those images I won't forget. Way to go rougheye. If you get a chance post some stats. Mainbeams, spread etc.
-
yes but i dont know where to put him yet
Wish I had that problem :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
I dont have the sheet in front of me but I know his main beams were 60 and 62 outside spread was about 51 I thought he was a 6-7 but as u can see he has an 8 point I didnt really know how he would score before i shot him I just knew he was huge still cant believe how big he is
-
6x7 or 6x8? Who Cares ;) Just build a bigger room to put him in. :brew:
-
That is a great bull, the score does seem high though, maybe its just the pics. I saw pics of a friends bull that looks much bigger but doesnt score that high, optical illusion I guess.
-
Thanks for that rougheye!
I saw pics of a friends bull that looks much bigger but doesn't score that high
I know who's bull you are thinking of Huntnphool, But if you look at the 2nd and 3rd pics everything else being equal rougheye's bull has a little longer 1st and 2nds and all you need is 2-3" more per those points and it will add 8 maybe 10 more inches overall. Where I really think he (rougheye) gets him is mainbeam bull you are thinking of had 54-55" main beams and rougheye's is 60-62. So 10" on the front and 8" on the mains theres your difference.
-
Hard to top that year, dandy bull and a dandy buck. What are some stats on the buck, he is no slouch.
-
Beautiful animals, particularly for Wa.. Much congrats.
-
My buck green scored 167 26 inches wide my biggest yet
-
Lucky S.O.B if you ask me....
-
WOW VERY NICE CONGRATS!!!
