OK TOM, SHOW US YOUR BLACKTAIL
-
Why? So you can take that spot to! :chuckle: :chuckle:
Just kidding brother, hard to harvest a blacktail if we are putting all our time in whitetail country.
-
you might try the west side of the state :P.
i have seen some bruisers in the coweeman as well as the toutle (only areas i have hunted) while hunting for elk. i think most of the areas have good bucks in the deep dark hell holes. there is a lot of thick country over there where nobody wants to go!!!!!
i accidently passed a nice (110" 4x4 with eye guards) because i thought he was just a spike. i was only seeing his eye guards. another guy killed him

Come down to Lewis, or Thurston county, find a gate, make sure, I mean sure, that you have Oct 28th, -31st off, use good glass, know how to use it, and you should have a chance at a goodun.....

COOL, I WILL STAY AWAY, BUT JUST SO I DONT ACCIDENTALLY WANDER IN, WHERE IN VAIL? ;)
-
Vail is only the highest blacktail producing unit.
-
It may be the highest producing blacktail unit, but 90% of the bucks that come out of their are spikes. Hope they do close it up this year. That place is an absolute zoo. Great country though, will be good again in the future.
-
Yes, tons of spikes and two points, but there are some monsters in there if you are willing to put in the time and learn the area.

257 hit the nail on the head. If you want to kill a blacktail be in the woods from the 28 - 31. I'll take those four days over the four days in november anytime.

your crazy :chuckle:, nov is where its at. i'd say hit some national forest or wilderness, lots of areas in the stormking unit that are closed off but you can still walk in
if your lucky you could come out with one of these

North of hwy 2 anyware from Gold Bar to the Stevens Summit. Steep....Steep....Steeeeeep :yike: and not a ton of roads, but some of the biggest blacktails I have ever seen. I bow hunt and missed a heavy 4x4 that was probably 20 inches wide and 24-26 high. It was a toad. A lot of bear over there as well. Also, I have very rarely seen a doe that didn't have a buck in tow. So be pt when you see the bald ones, the head gear will be somewhere close. Good Luck.
Google the Gold Bar Buck. There are good genes out there.

A lot less people in oct. than nov. and the bucks are just starting to rut. My absolute favorite time to hunt blacktails. If the weather is bad, it makes it that much better. And another thing that makes it better is when the 28th falls on a monday or tuesday. You will have the woods to yourself.

i just love that late season ;)

I think he said he is a bow hunter.

You can still bow hunt with a rifle tag.

oh ya well that kinda sucks, but if you can get a big one with a bow more power to ya
-
I would look into some of the units that are over ran with the blacktail and check out the ones that are open shortly after the rut. Nov.24th We used to get some nice bucks or with the late archery tags.
-
hound...that is a killer blacktail....I have never taken a blacktail either....but I know what a good one looks like, and I like that one you have there.....
-
unfortunetly it aint mine, i got sick and coulnt go with my old man and my uncle but it was taken in the sweet spot
this is what i average (shot this 2 years ago), not bad i guess. i missed a good one this year and didnt find one that i think woulda been my best

That buck was actually not a blacktail. The guy ended up getting in quite a bit of trouble. He was buying them on E-bay and cutting the skull plates out of smaller deer and slipping in the new skullplate and then taking pictures. He sold them to a guy in Colorado and another guy in Cali. I think. Neither one ever got the antlers and they were proven not to be a BT. There are no deer at all off of Hwy 2, they have all been hit by cars or killed by wolves and cougars! :chuckle:
