Post by: duckfvr on July 16, 2009, 08:19:50 AM
Just wondering if anyone was willing to share some info on the taneum unit 336  my dad and i r hunting it this year for archery, trying to find some cows for the freezer. We hunted rimrock last year and this year its time for taneum. We r heading this friday and r spending all weekend up there scouting ofr elk and a good place to put a big wall tent, so any info would b much appreciated, no honney holes just maybe some good starting points, and we do not have horses all on foot

I've never seen elk in the Taneum in the early season.  (Although don't hunt it much during the early season.)  Late season however, if there's snow the area around Elk Heights will have all sorts of elk moving through there on the way to the feeding station.

I've shot two spikes and a 4pt bull in that unit.  We hunted the area around fishhook flats.  The area has not been as good the past few years. The group I hunt with will be hunting the nile and bumping units this year.  We got two bull permits in camp and I have one of them.  I've shot all 3 elk out of that unit from the same tree stand.

hunted it last year. if you get in there aound the first good snow you should see alot of elk. we hunted five point ridge. it was hit or miss we basically chase the same little herd all over that ridge for three days. but we were a lil late. almost all of the elk were already done at the feeding station. the year prior we went up, there was about 3 feet of snow and we could only drive half way up, not fifteen minutes after reaching the top my buddy jordan shot a nice cow. we spent the next two days packin her out. deep snow sucks. you will know if your too late if when you drive through town the fire station is overrun with elk.

Unfortunately they are not gated.  They are closed but there are ATV tracks all up and down the closed roads.    >:(
