Title: 190 Bergers
Post by: jjhunter on July 18, 2009, 07:01:19 PM
I wanted to switch to 190 Bergers for hunting season this year (was using 168's) in my .300 win.  I finally got to head to the range today and they performed just as I thought they would.  I jammed them pretty hard and worked my way up to max load.  I was pretty happy how they performed.  It looks like the max charge will be a very good load.

Components:

Nosler Custom Brass
Federal 215 Gold Medal Primer
H4831 Powder
190 Berger VLD

Those are some great groups and some good shooting.
I shoot the 185 VLDs in my 300 WSM and I'm getting between .3 and .4 MOA at 300yds with them. When you get a chance, try them at longer ranges. My 300yd groups are acually the same size as the 100yd groups. The VLDs seem to stabalize at about 200yds so they shoot better at longer ranges. At least for me.

I shot the 168's out to 600 and shot some scary good groups.  I shot one 5/8" group at 600!  These 190's should do well, too.  What kind of speed are getting out of the 185's and the WSM?

Why did you scrap the 168's?

You get an extra .070 or so in BC jumping to the 190s (.512 vs .583)... the next logical step is the 210 (.630) or the 208 Amax (.645)... but I think he spun his pipe 1/11"... so I don't know if those two pills are an option or not.

Correct.  Actually, 1/12".  I am maxed out with the 190.  I wanted more BC's as Josh stated.  I need to Chrono the last load - I am hoping for 3050 fps out of my 27" pipe.

So I guess the 240 Sierra "football" is out too...

I'm thinking 3050 with a 190 ought to leave a dent in whatever it's pointed at... I'm running the 208 Amax at that same velocity with a nice mellow load (92 grains of Retumbo) in the .300 RUM... it don't shoot as well as your rifle though.

Josh - I gotta thank you for putting Mike's number on here.  He is really good guy and cleaned up a few things on the rifle and added a DE brake.  I love this rifle, now!  He is going to put my BAT 243 together for me in a couple months.

He's a good 'smith... and very reasonable. I see a lot of his rifles at local ranges. Glad it worked out for you... we should take the rifles up in the hills and run them out to 1k or so one of these days.

We'll have to do that!  Mike told me there was a 600 yard range close to his place.  I would like to check that out some time as well.

It's a nice range... have to get permission to shoot at 600 though... and we both know that 600 is only the beginning of where shooting gets really challenging. And... the range is one thing... doing it across a canyon... in a fickle little breaze... slightly downhill... off a bipod is where the men are seperated from the boys. I've got plenty of milk jugs that need shot... and I'm headed up on Wednesday evening to get the .300 wrung out.

Damn nice groups!!  I don't doubt you, but they look smaller than the  measurements.  Impressive groups either way.

Give us some more stats on the gun,

What loads are you all using?

I put it on here last year when I had it built.  Added a DE brake this spring.  Blueprinted 700 action, hs precision stock, hart barrel, jewell trigger, nightforce 5.5x22/rings/bases.....The loads data is on the targets.  No turn necks.

No turn necks.

Ohhh... it'll turn necks, and heads, and flat-green rifles into actual rifles. Shame on you for posting gratuitus gun porn like that on a family site... shame, shame.

My bad....... :chuckle:  I know pics just make people spend more money.  I had to have a DE brake after seeing yours on here.

That brake is sweet, huh?

I love touching off a 208 with 92 grains of powder behind it... and being able to watch the show when it hits schitt. Not to mention the fact that my nose is still in the same place it was when I got the gun... don't know if the same could be said had I chose to touch off a few of the 240 Sierra loads sans brake!

Yeah,  I shoot this thing nearly "free recoil" at the bench!

nice looking setup.  What is the weight on it?

I'm not pushing them very hard, so I'm getting 2940fps from a 28" tube using H4350. The groups are good enough that I don't see any need to mess with it right now.
