One of the 15 females for Stevens/Pend Oreille quota was poached this weekend and seized by Fish and Game. >:( We're down to 8 females or 21 total cats left before the harvest is closed. They took 3 females and 3 males this weekend.
-
that sucks.... did you hear the particulars?
-
Thats no good, how do you mean it was poached? Guy had no tag or shot it in the lights or something?

A friend of mine was running his hounds when the Game Warden stopped him to check tags and permits. He had a female lion in the back of his truck he'd just confiscated from someone who did not know the season was open only for permit holders. I believe (not 100% sure) but it sounded like a chance killing and the guy might have even been checking it in when he got the bad news and had the cat confiscated. I'll try to find out more details and let you know.
-
is every unit only aloud so many cats?
-
yes...but it's so many females first, then so many lions in the end. if the limit is 20 cats, but 5 females, as soon as the 5th female is killed, it becomes pursuit only as i understand it regardless of how many males are left till the quota is met.
i pulled those numbers out of my ass, but you get the idea. machias, if i'm wrong, please correct me.
-
Actually you are mostly right on the money :) The five counties doing the hound permits is the only ones under the quota system. The rest of the state is open to lion hunting till 15 March.
-
and there is no boot hunting in those 5 counties?

like you gotta wear sandals?
-
:chuckle: :chuckle: Barefoot!
Right on jackelope, no boot hunting in those five counties.
-
Thanks for the info Machias. Too bad the guy got lucky with a chance killing and then found out the season was closed and open only to permit hunters. Also too bad it removed one from the quota for the special season.
-
Yea it's a sad situation all around, now there's a beautiful animal that won't be displayed properly as well. I'll find out the details and let everyone know what I find out.
-
>:( Cant believe that. >:(
Hey fred, how do you know this exactly number was caught.
I am sooo happy they got caught!

Sounds like the guy made a mistake...a costly mistake. The rules are hard to figure out sometimes, but it is our job to learn them.
-
Coonhunter, you have to call the hotline each day before you go hunting and they tell you how many females and total lions are left.
Billythekidrock it can be confusing and your right it is our responsibilitiy. I once almost shot a huge muley buck, but couldn't quite make out the third tine. His size was massive and I was positive it would have been there had I shot in the low light, but didn't. Got home and checked the regs and realized mulies had closed two days prior. I would have been in deep shinola!!
-
Do you guys ever tree the collared cats up there?
-
im goin crazy, i still havnt been out yet! soon though, winter break is just round the corner
-
cougeyes YES one TOM was killed by a hunter I know who with a okanagon permit and Game warden of okanagon was tracking the cat with collar on and found it at campsite it was on neck still. Hunter already report it before Rick the SEG. arrive. Rick did measure and Weight 155lbs. He got a NICE cat! congt on him!

Fred, Yes I know about that but how do you know they poaching. Does it say in hotline. I better call and find out! ha. When are you going up?
Billythekidrock, its NOT HARD to figure! just read harder and IF YOUR NOT SURE then HOW DO YOU PASS HUNTING SAFETY COURSE? :dunno:, Then dont HUNT until you ask any futher better question with wfd..
;)

If you are not confused by the rules and regs then you aren't reading them...lol

HA. :chuckle:
-
haha agreed upon with that statement!

My understanding is the one currently displayed at the Vancouver F&W office was aquired under similar circumstances :chuckle:
-
I think it usually depends on whether or not the G&F boys have somewhere to put a mount for display or not, but I do believe mosty of the animals you'll see posted up at a G&F display will be confiscated game.
-
Well I spoke to the guy whole told me about this and he said the warden did not get into the specifics, other then the cat was taken without dogs and he got the impression the fella that shot it thought the season was still open. I talked to another fella last night who had some outstanding trail camera pics of a lion and bobcat and wanted to know if I could come up and help him kill it. He was also under the impression the season was open till 15 Mar. He was suprised to find out it was only open to permit holders with dogs.
-
I don't hunt for cats in those five counties on foot, but was unaware that during the hound season you only can use hounds. Kinda of a crazy law IMO. I think it is a great stroke of business to implement hounds back into the system and should probably add several counties to the already five. I guess are you guys saying that if I want to go call in cats in one of the five counties I can't???? Just curious.

the season would be closed in those 5 counties, unless you're a hound hunter:

That is correct WACATHUNTER, I believe it is because of the quota. We have to call each day and find out if the harvest is still open. That is not required in any other unit.
-
I guess, I don't understand why they make it open only to houndsmen, anyone can check the quota, Correct??? I am all for giving the houndsmen a season especially with what it take to train, feed, raise, etc. Do they think general cat hunters will have that much of an impact???
-
I guess my outlook is a little different.
The more dead cats the better.
-
to me, the more dead cats the better female or male. but i guess if i keep goin its just gunna start up another argument that we've already had. but i dont want all the females shot up first, cause then i wont be able to kill this year
-
Hey houndhunter if you wont kill any this year GIVE me your DRAW permit :dunno:
coonhunter
-
haha :chuckle:
we now a guy thats got several thousnd acre game ranch. its 8 miles across, it is all fenced in but the cat can climb out, so we may go take care of that cat for him i thinks its still fair cause the cat can climb out but hopefully we tree him before that
-
so you're going to run hounds on a lion inside a high fence??
wonderful.
:bash: :bash:
to me, the more dead cats the better female or male
and you are/want to be a hound hunter??
come on, kid. you like running hounds, right? you better change that opinion while you still have a choice.
-
Anyone heard about Okanagon caught 3 and cited houndmen for poaching with no permits and they took cat by Game warden Officer in okag county. I heard from a buddy today. ANYONE heard about it. NO KIDDING whats wrong with people! :bash:
coonhunter >:(
-
to those of you who have permits, I am sad this chap was caught and you lost one cat. I do hope that he can fall under the loophole that the bear baiters have used. I have never in my life seen more cat sign and I live and hunt in cat country. I look at myself as a pretty ethical hunter, but I might have a tough time passing a cat up if it was close to homes or livestock.

well right now there are to many lions running round, so yes the more cats dead the better, until there numbers go down
-
I'm with you guys, the more cats killed the better, maybe the deer numbers will go back up to when hound hunting was legal. And I'm not just talking about the permit units, I'm talking about the whole damn state. Hopefully one of these days the wdfw will wake up and re-instate hound hunting. I'm sure they can put all kinds of hard to understand regulations and permits on the season, but just give it back. >:(
-
You will have to convince the voting public in this case, since they outlawed the hound hunt. Good luck with that... :dunno:
-
I know there are afew attorneys on here so maybe one of them can set me straight on this.
My understanding is that the houndhunting, bear baiting, and body gripping traps was introduced on the same bill, which is a violation of the states constitution. that is where the bear baiters were getting off the hook.......someone clear it up for me please.
-
Bear baiting, and hounds, ie chasing bobcats, lions and bears were on the same bill. Trapping was outlawed on a later bill. The bear baiters got off in one county...Jefferson (I think). You will still get prosecuted, property and dogs confiscated and have large legal bills in the rest of the state. Also only works if you get the RIGHT judge, not some liberal POS. Yes IMHO (which really means nothing) it is unconstitutional, but there have been several legal challenges to the constitutionality and they have been shot down at every turn.
-
whats the deal with running foxs with hounds in mt adams area?? how does that work?
-
Fox wasn't mentioned on the bill so go for it. Let me know how it is, who knows maybe I'll start running those damn things
-
well i dont know anything bout it, just have always read in the regs that you can hunt them in mt adams area year round. so do you just run down a fox till it tires out? i think you can hunt yotes with hounds too, but im not sure
