Has anyone hunted Montana in the end of September or beginning of October for upland birds? I am planning a trip with the pup for a week and looking for any ideas or suggestions? Looking for Huns, sharpies, and sage grouse. I have some private property already lined up but looking for any advice.
Thanks.

Not much help but minus the private land lined up, I'm looking at something of the same idea.

We used to hunt near the Great Falls area. We would just drive and drive until we located a covey or work the brushy draws that were known for birds. Seems we found the most Sages and Sharptails in old abandoned orchards tho. Huns were where you found them and pheasants were in the brush choked coolies near a grain field or just along the fence rows.

I did a bit of freelance upland hunting in Montana last Fall. I found the information on private land access from the Montana Fish & Game Dept. to be very helpfull:

Many of the Wildlife Refuges have upland bird hunting, as well. A web search on each one can usually provide you with a map of the hunting areas.

Thanks for the link
Am planning on taking my dog to hunt Montana public land this year

I Got my GWP pup from a hunter from Montana who is also a writer. He wrote a book called "Training the Versatile hunting dog" and also one called "Wingshooters Guide to Montana". I haven't read the book but his Wingshooters Guide should be pretty good because he hunts birds over there on all of his free time. You can look at it at www.wildadvpress.com
Maybe that will help you.

i'm sure you can get to it by the link t-bone gave you. i just signed up to get the block manegment maps for the units i hunt in today. i'll be in the 400 series units in late oct., nov. have lots of water for the dogs and good luck :)

Try block management stuff. Usually decent numbers of birds. Watch for snakes and the heat that time of year.

For the most part, anywhere 50 miles any direction around lewistown has good pheasant hunting. ;)

Thanks for the suggestions. That is good about Lewistown because that is where I am headed. Pheasants don't open until the 10th of October but I will be there.

Lewistown does have pleny of birds but mostly private land. I deer hunt just north of town and see and hear a lot of birds in late october/early Nov.
Not sure if you have access lined up there yet but if your interested in paying a little to play I can give you a good contact. PM me if interested.
