Title: AR15 for hunting rifle
Post by: fishcrazy on July 21, 2009, 04:24:40 PM
We are selling my wifes 300 wsm. She just isn't happy with it. It's not that she don't like the 300 wsm she don't like the Weatherby Vangaurd.

She has a reciever for an AR she thinks she might wanna biuld a hunting calibur gun on it. We are not sure what cal. yet but are looking at a 270 wsm or maybe .308.

We are open to other ideas on the cal.

Can she biuld something for $550-$600 plus the reciever she owns now? I havn't priced parts yet?

has anybody shot one in a legal hunting cal. and what did you think?

Kris

Might look into a 30 Remington AR, their new round.  figure 30-30/300 Savage ballistics in an AR platform.

Pretty sure you need a AR 10 reciever, at least for the 308

Here for the 30 Rem AR (wish they built one in 6.8 SPC)

Or for 243, 7mm-08 or .308:

6.8 SPC is a good deer round out of the AR.  It can be handloaded for 90-130 grn bullets. Not sure about factory loadings?

.243 would be a good caliber for light hunting like for deer.  for elk a .308 or 7mm-08 for both. depends on what kinda hunting.

I have a 243wssm in an ar15 upper. Love that round!

On an AR15 lower, I'd go with the 6.8 SPC.  A great deer/predator/varmint caliber.  A little pricey for factory ammo, but can be easily (and cheap) reloaded.  The .223/5.56 and 6.8 bolts are not interchangeable, so you'll have to have separate bolts for your different uppers.

On the AR10 platform, the 6.5 Creedmore looks very interesting.

Don't forget to drop in a match trigger.  I just installed a Timney #3 in my DPMS predator rig... awesome trigger!

243/25wssm or the 6.5grendel would be my choice for an ar 15.

The AR's are picking up popularity wise for hunting rifles.  May see a lot more in the future.

I wonder what an AR hunting rifle might weight? I know mine is fricken HEAVY. Could be an issue for her. I just thought of that  today.

There is the 7mm, 300, 338, and 358wssm that dtech is working on that would all work of anything in this state. I think the 243/25wssm uppers are like 6-7lbs.

No, I just know his wife and didnt think she would like to pack something that was too heavy for hunting. Just something to look into. Add the scope in there too. I'll just weight mine and see, maybee I am just a wouse  :chuckle:

So probably 10+ pounds with a scope, rings and bases, and a sling. Probably more like 10.5 ish? Guess thats not too out of the ordinary.

Mine weighed in at 10 pounds, and it has a scope on it already. My hunting rifle (1963 Belgium Browning 308 Norma Mag ) weighed in at 8.5 pound and my 270 was at 8.  My AR has a 20 inch barrel also.

Since you are using it for elk i would avoid .243. Just my  :twocents: :twocents: But i am a huge fan of the 7mm-08. Great all around gun. Have used it for deer and elk. (and its yote friendly)

Mine has a bull barrel also. Now the K-16 has a 16 inch barrel right?

Just got info from a client of mine that built a 30-30 AR? and it weighed in at 7 pounds with scope and sling, unloaded. So that is pretty good.

Ya bucky we know yer a pwoozy. I have the video to prove it!!

We plan on biulding the gun as light as possible colapsible stock and short barrel. She will mostly be hunting from the truck or real close to it.

We are thinking about tradeing or selling the AR 15 reciever for an AR 10. Kinda intrested in the 338-.308. Not sure what reciever  I will need but thought my buddy said the 15 will work.

We want to use a small scope. Maybe a red dot scope. We are in no hurry as she won't be hunting this year.

ar 10 for the .308 class cartridges

Yeah the k16 has a 16in barrel.

If you go with the ar10 they are more $ and tip the scales a lot more. U can get a 300-338 cal on the ar-15 platform and there is the 450 bushmaster 50 beowolf too.

what .308-.338 can you get in an ar15 platform besides the .30 RAR and the whispers

Well dtech has them in 7mm-358 based on the wssm case. I know Olympic arms is working on the 300ossm which is from the wssm too.

I'm starting to build a 6.8 Rem SPC AR right now. . .I've got the Mega Arms M4 billet upper and lower receiver set ($375 for billet vs. forged) and I'll be using the RRA 2-stage lower parts group, Mag Pul PRS stock, AR15 Performance 16.5" 6.8 Rem SPC barrel w/alloy bolt assembly and carrier. . .the only thing I haven't decided on yet is which forend rail system I'm gonna use. . .so many to choose from!

This is gonna be my everthing gun (coyote, bob, cougar, deer, black bear. . .maybe some elk. . .the 6.8 is a .270 after all). . .it should end up being lighter than my bull barreled Weatherby Vanguard .22-250 with sling, bipod, and scope. . .I get tired of lugging that heavy thing around.

For the price of the build, if you are looking for a deer rifle (that you might use for elk)  I would look at a savage bolt gun if you want the lower price.  If your willing to pay 6-800 I would look at one of the new Winchesters in stainless.

On a side note I got to shoot one of the new Winchesters in 270 wsm the other day.  I have to say it has proably the nicest factory trigger I have ever shot out of the box.

I want to do the AR build. . .I want a semi-auto (faster follow-up shot if I miss a coyote). . .

. . .price isn't the issue. . .I already started off on the wrong foot there by buying a billet receiver set instead of buying the cheaper forged units. . .

. . .this will be a top of the line all-purpose AR for hunting pretty much everything up to elk. . .be nice to take down to Texas to my GF's papa's place and shoot some pigs with it too. . .I hear the 6.8 is an awesome hog caliber especially in the AR platform.

Here is a link that allows you to design your own AR.  It comes as a kit, which means it has everything except the lower reciever.  Thought you might find the info usefull.
