Title: AR15 for hunting rifle
Post by: fishcrazy on July 21, 2009, 04:24:40 PM: We are selling my wifes 300 wsm. She just isn't happy with it. It's not that she don't like the 300 wsm she don't like the Weatherby Vangaurd.

She has a reciever for an AR she thinks she might wanna biuld a hunting calibur gun on it. We are not sure what cal. yet but are looking at a 270 wsm or maybe .308.

We are open to other ideas on the cal.

Can she biuld something for $550-$600 plus the reciever she owns now? I havn't priced parts yet?

has anybody shot one in a legal hunting cal. and what did you think?

Post by: Straight Shooter on July 21, 2009, 06:11:40 PM: On an AR15 lower, I'd go with the 6.8 SPC. A great deer/predator/varmint caliber. A little pricey for factory ammo, but can be easily (and cheap) reloaded. The .223/5.56 and 6.8 bolts are not interchangeable, so you'll have to have separate bolts for your different uppers.

On the AR10 platform, the 6.5 Creedmore looks very interesting.

Don't forget to drop in a match trigger. I just installed a Timney #3 in my DPMS predator rig... awesome trigger!

So probably 10+ pounds with a scope, rings and bases, and a sling. Probably more like 10.5 ish? Guess thats not too out of the ordinary.

Post by: bucklucky on July 29, 2009, 03:04:05 PM: Mine weighed in at 10 pounds,and it has a scope on it already. My hunting rifle (1963 Belgium Browning 308 Norma Mag ) weighed in at 8.5 pound and my 270 was at 8. My AR has a 20 inch barrel also.

Mine has a bull barrel also. Now the K-16 has a 16 inch barrel right?

We plan on biulding the gun as light as possible colapsible stock and short barrel. She will mostly be hunting from the truck or real close to it.

We are thinking about tradeing or selling the AR 15 reciever for an AR 10. Kinda intrested in the 338-.308. Not sure what reciever I will need but thought my buddy said the 15 will work.

We want to use a small scope. Maybe a red dot scope. We are in no hurry as she won't be hunting this year.

If you go with the ar10 they are more $ and tip the scales a lot more. U can get a 300-338 cal on the ar-15 platform and there is the 450 bushmaster 50 beowolf too.

This is gonna be my everthing gun (coyote, bob, cougar, deer, black bear. . .maybe some elk. . .the 6.8 is a .270 after all). . .it should end up being lighter than my bull barreled Weatherby Vanguard .22-250 with sling, bipod, and scope. . .I get tired of lugging that heavy thing around.

Post by: Shootmoore on January 21, 2010, 09:45:51 AM: For the price of the build, if you are looking for a deer rifle (that you might use for elk) I would look at a savage bolt gun if you want the lower price. If your willing to pay 6-800 I would look at one of the new Winchesters in stainless.

On a side note I got to shoot one of the new Winchesters in 270 wsm the other day. I have to say it has proably the nicest factory trigger I have ever shot out of the box.

you can build a 30 Remington AR....been looking into that...its like a 30-30 ballistics
