Title: Does anyone have any experience with a Pudelpointer?
Post by: arintime on July 23, 2009, 12:18:40 AM
I have been looking for a dog since the beginining of july. I saw the pudelpointer on the t.v. show on American Gun Dog and I was wondering if anyone has that breed or if somebody has hunted behind one. From all the research I have done, it seems to be a pretty versitile breed. I am new to hunting and I want to hunt pheasant, quail, chukar, and duck. Any imput would be great!

I have a Pudelpointer. Best dog I have ever owned. The main dog on American Gun Dog that featured Pudelpointers is call named Tukr and registered name is Cedarwoods First Offense and he is my dogs sire. Bob Farris is the breeder and he was the guy on the show. He is probably the #1 breeder in the US right now and knows his dogs. PM me for any specifics.

Another versitile breed is a lab. ;)  A good lab can do all the upland and duck hunting you mention.

If I was going to hunt pheasant and ducks in Eastern Washington 95% of the time I would go with a lab. If I was going to hunt ducks in Western Washington and chukar/quail 95% of the time I would go with a pointer. The average lab can't cover as much terrain all day that the average pointer can and the average pointer can't take water retrieves in 20 degree weather all day like a lab can. With my pudelpointer the only thing I have loss to my labs is the hours of below freezing water work. I hunt in Western Washington for ducks so I really haven't loss anything but I have gained a fair amount with the chukar/quail hunting. I like both breeds a lot but my next dog will be another Pudelpointer.

Pudelpointers are great dogs, I thought about getting one but went with a GWP instead.  No real reason why they are both great dogs.

I will dig up some pictures of mine. Here is the breeders website that I bought mine from. www.cedarwoodgundogs.com I will say my Pudelpointer is pretty slick coated so her coat isn't as good for cold water work as some other Pudelpointers. The breeder used to raise Chessies and swapped over to the Pudelpointer about 30 years ago and says they are as good in cold weather as his Chessies. Mine is not but her coat is more like a GSP

My father-in-law got one about 9 years ago. He would swear by them. The dog he got started having arthritis, so he got another one. I can find out the breeder if you'd like. They are in Idaho I believe.

I would bet it is cedarwood kennels out of boise. I looked at the breed and he that was the big one in ID

I researched all the versatile breeds and think they are all quality breeds. My next will be a DD, I just like the ones I have met.
