Title: Pink humpies...
Post by: bennybooboo on July 23, 2009, 10:23:47 AM
Has anybody been catching the pink salmon yet?  I heard they were starting to run up the rivers, just curious which ones.  And for that matter, when they'll start getting a bit up-stream.

early-mid august on the "S" rivers. i haven't heard of any yet and the sky was almost void of fishermen the other day. if the humpies were there at all, they'd be fishing by the hundreds.

What are you guys doing with them when you catch one?

Total dog food IMO.

I used to give mine to some Indians so there dogs would have enough food.  They would freeze them in a chest freezer and just get one out every day for the dogs :dunno:

I always through them back.  However, I did keep a couple 2 years ago and smoked them up for the heck of it.  They weren't too bad.  Fun fish to catch on light tackle.

When I was growing up my friends and I would have humpie tournaments almost every day in AK.. there were some days I landed 200+ fish mostly just kicked them loose.  I was just wondering if they were considered table fish in washington :chuckle:

if anything i think they're considered good in the smoker if they're from the salt or down low in the rivers...my neighbor catches a ton of them in the snohomish and smokes them. they're still bright with little to no "hump" and they smoke up good. i've tried them on the grill and they're mediocre at best and only from the salt. not worth keeping if you ask me.

they're also a ton of fun for kids. i took my buddy and his 9 year old boy 2 years ago and floated the sky. we caught so many fish the kid was sleeping in my boat while we were floating back to the take out. he was shot.
he didn't care if they were good eating or not.

We nailed a half dozen or so of the Humpies off of Sekiu a couple weeks back.  BBQ'ed on the first night we were there, it was pretty good eats.  Nothing like the chinooks we caught of course, but hey not too bad.  Am smoking the rest of them.

In the salt I think they smoke as well as any fish. In the river I like flyfishing for them and might smoke a bright one. Usually, our contests are for the biggest, ugliest buck of the day.....Broke my humpy Cortland 6-7 previous run. Replaced with an older Orvis 7. Looking forward to it. I think I've found some new slots for casting close to home for quick trips on the river.

I crack up at all my buddies that ask if I'm going pink fishing!! Why in the hell would I target those little nasties when there are Kings right now?! Like some of you others are saying, Im sure its a kick to catch em on a fly rod, but I wouldn't go out just targeting them. Shoot, silvers should start showing up pretty soon too.

The tribe has been netting across the creek at the Hoodsport hatchery this week.  Today they had it completely blocked off with their nets.  That is great, we pay to raise the fish and the tribe steals them from us at the hatchery.

I here hay bails do a pretty good job on "cleaning out" nets! :chuckle:
The problem is that the nets are literally within 50 yards or less of the hatchery and in a creek that couldn't move a bale of hay if it wanted to.  The hatchery workers were standing on the bulkhead watching the Skoks work their nets right in front of them.

The ones I've had smoked were as good as any smoked salmon I thought - just a lot smaller.  I'd be awful tempted to bleed and gut them when caught and stuff them in champagne ice, before I'd write them off.  Never fished for them, though, suspect they need a lot more care to be palatable.

I have smoked humpies, and canned them for sandwich spread, they are good that way.  They do not last long in the freezer though,

humpies are as good as any other salmon, just different. the key is you HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF THEM. gut them and throw them on ice IMMEDIATELY and they will eat up excellent when caught bright in the river or salt. they are very oily and do well on the barbecue and in the smoker as well. I just got back from a trip to neah bay and we nailed 36 salmon total of 3 kings 5 silvers and the rest humpies YUM

If any of you ever snub your nose at Humpy fishing, you don't like fishing. :yike:  If you want the one the best times for a family to go and have a blast go to Valdez AK on the 4th of July time frame.  Literally you'll catch a 100-200 each in the course of a day.  Me- as much as I liked catching Kings, I didn't eat them either, maybe toss one in the smoker, but I was spoiled for years with fresh Reds so everything else was just that fishing for fun.  I got pictures of my kids when they were 3 and 4 with literally stringers full of Humpies, they would catch them on their little rods, one every cast.  Remember a few times having to really hold their hand while they crossed the river in Hope, cause they kept stepping on passing fish and falling.  Heck yea, humpy fishing is a blast....  From big ho daddy ones that interfer with Rainbow fishing to the motley crew getting ready to take on the river..

The way I see it is when the humpies are running, you can catch fish all day and pick and choose which ones to eat.  I always bleed any fish I catch, it makes the meat taste less fishy.  When I rip the gills out, I always shoot the blood all over my Dad and little Bro, gives them a little luck :chuckle:

Spur_Ride and I have gone over to the puyallup river the last few seasons and never done real well. People all around us were catching fish, but we only would get one or two every 4 hours! The river is milky white, and we used corkys with pink yarn, with pencil lead sinker about two feet below the fly. Dose this sound right to the veteran humpy fisherman? Guess the weight would skip along the bottom a little slower that the current. Dont know what we were doing wrong!!!

with gear i always use pink jigs like the one in the pic i posted or a little tiny 50/50 brass/chrome dick nite spoon with enough pencil lead about 30" above it to make it tick the bottom.
don't reel it in, just let it swing. if it gets stuck on the bottom or stops, get rid of a little weight a little at a time.

They are good to smoke.  I will eat a fresh one, but if you freeze it, you will need to hide the taste in tarter.  I have heard of a few being caught on the Skagit, but it is early for them.  End of August and Sept they should hit good.

 :yeah:

Try Chartreuse (green) yarn and a pink or orange corkie, very visable in murky water. The combo works well for me, and you can catch silvers, kings and humpies at the same time.

I use 18" leader, but I dont fish for the humpies,Im fishing for silvers.I only fish one hole its the edge of a cliff with some brush on it..I let it drift under the brush, the silvers  like to lay there.I like to barley touch the bottom with lead..If I using a noodle rod I just float a chunk of eggs no weight..The body of water I fish is only about 20 to 25 feet wide
