Title: A little scouting...
Post by: littletoes on July 24, 2009, 08:22:42 PM
Made a big loop today on some ground I haven't seen in a few. Although I did see some sign, I didn't see any bears. The weather was hot at first, but turned to wet and cold, the way I prefer it!

Rained hard for a bit, then turned to hail. Tore up leaves on quite a few plants, especially the thimble berries.

Some on here might recognize this spot, its a big meadow in the middle of a great expanse of trees..this is actually a massive marsh, with standing water at the far end. A few elk tracks leading into it, but I couldn't find the animals.

Checked out several old clear cuts, but either I didn't spend the time, or I wasn't in the right place at the right time!

Some might enjoy this one...

Good looking country.  I had to take a second look at the pics, they look just like my hunting grounds in the SW part of the state, lol.

Thanks Guys, forgot to mention, didn't see ANY huckleberries above 4000 to 4500 feet, although there were big numbers of healthy plants. I know the berries can be hard to see when green, but still no berries above that mark.

There were quite a few below 4000 ft., but not all were ripe, just past the "red" stage, and the bad part was the hail knocked quite a few berries off of the plants.

Not good for bear futures if you ask me.
Thimble berries were looking thick and promising and was surprised to see a few red ones too!

Happy Hunting Guys!

Hey Tinkletoes !!! Nice photos I would like to suggest you get a more recognizable vehicle! Such as mine. You have any reports on the skeeto's.
I know where you were.  In the woods

I knew you'd has a good idee-ers where I was! :D

Told you when I passed you on the road, your rig was to "identifiable". Like I said before, its a cross between a State Patrol, and a Game Warden's rig! hehehe
Would have needed the 4-wheel capacity in the woods, muddy as hell up there, and lots of rocks on the way in. Anything smaller wouldn't have cleared the rocks in the road.
Did see Bear Sign in a couple of spots, but the rains washed most of it out.

Skeeters were just as bad as when you went out, only I didn't stay in one spot long enough to get eaten up like you did! HAHAHA! Seen them legs of yours, and yes I was dumb enough to wear shorts too, but I DID have the wind on my side.
