There have been some real winners that always break down when you are farthest from home or just don't seem to get you through the tough stuff. What do you think are the worst 5 hunting rigs ever made?
GMC should be considered as Chevy, Plymouth as Dodge, Lincoln as Ford, and so forth.
-
Never owned a volvo, but always heard they were such good rigs, what is their problem? :dunno:
-
bearpaw, are you bored or something? :chuckle:
-
the thread that gutpile started on guns was so good, i thought i would see what everyone thought about hunting rigs..... :chuckle:
-
Jealousy is a powerful emotion :chuckle:...OK, I will toss in a few votes...
Chevy Suck. So do Subaru.
-
Don't know which ones suck? Only have one so far and I love it "F150 Crew cab".
-
gotta love the F-350 crew-cab BRUCE T
-
american full sized rigs (-ford powerstrokes), and toyota 22r/re powered rigs... the only way to go.........
-
ID RATHER BE CUMMIN THAN STROKIN!! :P
-
Glad to see the infamous AMC Eagle atop the list! I always wanted to see one of those things tricked out and jacked way the hell up, but I guess nobody would bother with such a worthless ride.
-
gotta love the F-350 crab BRUCE T
For getting stuck. I saw three of them get stuck on one road. Driver error and I am just guessing that the heavier Diesel engine had something to do with it and poor stock tires?

my friend's dad from high school had a gremlin on a CJ chassis. that thing was (not)awesome.
volvos are too expensive to fix, #2 in line behind saabs if you ask me.
subarus are good cars, it's just that most of us don't like subaru's because they portray the REI tree hugger crowd. the fact is they are good cars. probably one of the least common in my shop.
chevy's suck just as bad as fords suck, ice, which both suck just as bad as dodges suck.
i'll also venture a guess that says F-350's don't get stuck anymore than any other vehicle when the driver puts them in a place they don't belong. this is always a great discussion. remember it's not guns that kill people, it's the people operating the gun. same goes for trucks.
-
for the price I payed for a rig it doesn't bother me a bit to park and go shanks-mare . I guess if the rig get's u close , we can run em' down . I once saw a honda accord coming out of the n. fork of the auhtanum with a branch antelered bull!
-
I've always liked chevy, just disappointed with the newer independent front axles, they just don't last worth a darn if you use them a lot. Never had many problems with the old straight axles on the front, however, I will admit they were rough riding.
I agree with jackelope on the subarus, I know some doggers and trappers that put a ton of hard miles on them and they just keep going.
Of course there are not many votes against toyotas. The older ones are darn tough rigs, 300,000 miles is common, I don't know much about all these new toyota models???? :dunno:
-
nothin beats my 83 chevy burb 3 speed. big heavy sucker hooks up anywhere and turns on a dime :chuckle:
-
I can't really cast a vote. I have had several trucks- all ford except one Chevy s-10 and they all drove me wherever I needed to go.
-
Honda Civic or Geo Metro is the way to go. You arent hunting until your out of your truck so these vehicles guaranty you more hunting time. ;)
-
cant believe every one is hatin on the trackers good lil rigs put a lil money into one they will go anywhere

just saty away from the v6's they arent worth a darn... :twocents: but i do like the NEW tacomas, aspecially the four door ones... might make one of those my next truck?
-
Anything MOPAR!!!!
-
My old Ford f100 was junk! Switched to Toyota, first landcruiser,then2000 tacoma. Best move I ever made. Now the Tacoma is going to my son and I am buying a new one Rock On Toyota. :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:

Blasphemy!!!!!! :yike: Wash your mouth out with soap!!!!!! :(
-
Yeah, I voted Hummer too! :chuckle: They look good at the malls. I can't even believe Jeep and Toyota are an option!!
MS
-
Give me my 82 CJ7 or 42 Ford GPW (WW2 Jeep built by Ford, under license from Willys) any day of the week. Twice on Sunday. :chuckle:
-
.... I miss both of my brats :'(
-
I was trying to be fair and list most everything.... :chuckle:
Hummer was one of my picks too....I don't think they will fit between trees on some jeep trails... :chuckle:
-

Have a funny story about Brats.
Were over hunting the Manastash one year. Our friends son, Gene has a Brat. Well, late one evening, were cutting up some wood for a fire, and we hear "HELP!........HELP!"
We all look at each other, and head off towards the noise. We get up there, and Gene has his Brat wedged between two trees. I, to this day, do not know how he did it. We ended up cutting one tree down to get the Brat out of there.
The next time you at Whiteside towing in Clearview, WA, and you see the owner, Gene, ask him if he has any Subaru Brats, but not wedged between trees. :chuckle:
-
my subaru hatchback (+4 inches) did manastash okay.
-
Eagles and Binders
-
binders was one of my picks too.......... :chuckle:
-
Chevy K5 Blazer with a 6.2L diesel engine, good fuel mileage and weight when it counts
-
Well I will start out by saying that I love my F-350 crew but man what a piece of crap for off roading. too much torque and too heavy can't even go up cravel anything with an incline without using four wheel drive and if it muddy or snowy forget it. It will tow a house and sure can haul wood though. Side note, don't ever buy a crew cab because you always get stuck driving everywhere.
-
I had a '97 F350 Crew Cab 4x4, Powerstroke. Much of the battle with the bigger trucks is tires. A good mud terrain tire works well. But the biggest mistake people make when traveling off road with a truck like this, is tire pressure. The 60+ psi street pressure makes the tires as hard as a rock and reduce the footprint of the tire. I used to drop mine down to about 35psi and it would go anywhere. Especially in the snow. :twocents:
-
the crappy part about tires on the diesels is they wear fast because of the weight. So you either buy mud tires every 30,000 miles or a street or all terrain and get 50 or sixty thousand. I'm too cheap to buy tires that often. Thats why I have my mountain goat, 87' Nissan long box. It went through all three of us brothers has 270,000 miles, three sixteen year olds worth of hard miles and is still running strong. I love that truck more than my wife :chuckle:
-
That's why you better not sell the Nissan. That thing is family. :)
-
I had a 76 VW Rabbit in college - doors didn't lock and you had to carry everything with you when you went hunting. Looked awesome when 4 guys and 2 dogs went bird hunting. I also borrowed an old VW Bug when mine broke. I wouldn't start right, but it was fine to compression start, so we alway parked on a hill and rolled down it to get going again.
I generally hunt in an old F250 (rough ride but happens to be what I own) but go over the pass a couple of times a week in my Subaru Forester. I stop to hunt a couple of places on the way home sometimes in Sept when there is enough light. I think it would be awesome to strap a deer to the top of that thing...:)

That there be a cadillac ;)
-
I must say I love my nissan and it can go and fit almost anywhere
-
My CJ7 has been our hunting rig since I was a kid. I learned how to drive in it on logging roads. Took my drivers test in it. When I was in the Army, I flew home from GA and drove it 3,522 miles back. Still have it.

-
I have to say that the Nissan and Jeep are probably some the "best" hunting rigs - I definitely don't think that they fall into the "worst" category.
-
theres probably the least amount of votes against jeep
-
It's a Jeep thing, some people just don't understand. :chuckle:
-
Took my car out once, didn't work out very well. About 5 inches of clearance :bdid:
-
that nissan looks like it would get stuck on a speedbump
-
Well get that damn coffee can sized muffler off the back and you might be able to haul an elk out!!
-
Last year we had a problem with our 2002 f-250 crew cab. 7.3 diesel. Way too heavy. they like wallering in the mud. they are like pigs, big and heavy. we were going up around a switch back at 4 in the morning for the late hunt. it was 6-7 inches of mud and the back end just got sucked into the ditch. It was either that or flying over a 50ft revene. we chose the ditch and the back end got burried in the mud in the hillside and mud was sliding onto and in the back. Had a heck of a time trying to chain up.
Not saying its a bad hunting rig. lots of room. just not that good for deep mud and snow unless you got chains.
-
Let about half the air out of the tires, makes a HUGE difference offroad.
-
;
-
Hmmm, it seems that I am a minority here. Yes I own a Volvo Suv and yes it is my dog transporter and YES it was just fine in the snow that seems to befuddle a great number of washingtonians that I witnessed this last winter! I am from Michigan...hear me roar! :stirthepot: :kneel:
-
worst hunting rig=FORD
-
F'ed Over Rebuild Dodge....F.O.R.D. :chuckle:
-
While yer Cummin and Stroken I'm doing her to the Duramax baby!!!!
Kris
-
this is my newest hunting rig. 87 325i automatic. it drives pretty nice but if its more that 65 degrees outside it tends to overheat ;)
-
somebody actually voted toyota's ?!!! are you out of your mind, yotas are hunting machines. i'll put mine up against a full size any day
-
seriously?! who would do such a thing? are you retarded?! come on!!!! COME ON!!! AHHHHHHH!!!!!
-
I have to admit the F350 sucked not so much as a bad hunting rig but with the diesel they're so front heavy and fords are alway light in the ass they dog track on wet grass....plus even with out chipping my 7.3L or hot rodding it like a youngster it still SH%^ out trannies like they were refried beans.
First one burnt the Converter coming over Snoqualmie pass with a 2400# camper doing 55 no OD. Had a 120K on it so I let that one slide. 2nd lasted 20,000 pulled an 8000# trailer three or four times again babied it for diesel anyway, 21K :dunno: then had ford put in one from their recomended tranny specialist, hauled that trailer once over Sno Pass again not pushing it, 45MPH going up the main pull at the summit in 2nd. That tranny lasted 6000 miles. Something's up with that motor/ tranny combo. Most tell me it's the oil galleries back in them 4th and OD gearing, not big enough and it heats up no matter.....SO no more auto for me and onto the 6.7L Cummins with 6 speed from now on. Duals though so it looks like a lot less road hunting with that width ;)
-
sometimes i think fords are like government conspiracy, i sware!
-
I have 140k on my hot rodded F-350 with a 7.3 and its still pulling strong. One thing I did add was a manual torque converter lock up. Just flip the switch and its direct drive, no slippage. Keeps the heat down and pulls like a manual. Just make sure you disengage it before stopping... or its like a manual with the clutch out. :chuckle:
-
looks like volvo is the kid nobody on the block likes.... :chuckle:
-
I'm suprised the VW got so many votes. I drove a golf in college and that thing was awesome. It went anywhere, fit 5 guys and 2 dogs all and did it at 40 mpg. I think that car saw every dirt road in south eastern Washington and central Idaho.
-
Apparently not very many of you have experience the the 2.8L S-10's, Blazers and P/U's.
It falls under the "Worst hunting rigs" category.
-
I agree, I would rather have a volvo than an s-10 blazer.
-
the 2.8L in the s-10 series is a horrible engine, but the 4.3 i think is one of the baddest V6's you can get around...
-
Full size fords. Just cause I hate fords.. Id rather drive a Volvo
