Title: which caliber is better
Post by: bankwalker on July 28, 2009, 05:28:45 PM
i have 4 rifles to choose from.

h&r 243, with 4power scope
remington model 722 in 257roberts with 4power scope or pull the scope off and use open sights.
winchester 30-30 with open sights
enfield 303 british with peep sights.

which one would you choose for shots 150yds or less. accuracy is not an issue. im comfortable shooting out to 150yds easy with both the 30-30 and 303 with open sights.

thanks.

id say the 243 but.... h&r's are single shots, so the 257 gets my vote  :twocents:

I say .30-.30 a vital part of the redneck trio: .30-.30, 12 ga, .22 rifle. Don't leave home without it.  :P

The best thing is to go with what ever gun you are most comfortable with or accurate with.  When it comes nut time and you have to make the shot if you are not comfortable with the rifle this will have an affect.

What are you shooting at deer, bear, coyote?  If something is running at you open sights make it alot easier to find the target than thru a scope. If you are thinking 1 shot animal down then we start getting into loads bullet types etc and everyone has their own opinion.

To officially make it the redneck trio, you have to fire at least a magazine worth of ammo from each gun into the El Camino sitting on blocks in the front yard.

For hunting bear: the 30-30.  It's quick follow up shots would be handy on bear.  In my opinion the 243 and 257 is to small of a caliber for bear.
