Feel free to update it!!!
48 Days

I've been making lists of food & stuff to bring for a pack in trip, I just hope the area don't get hit with a fire. It will be here in no time.

I think the high buck hunt is the best of all. haven't been able to go for a few years because I have been deployed each summer though. Me and a buddy hunted the Paseyton a few years. The high buck is definately not the easiest, but by far the most enjoyable. Back Packing in,setting camp, great views from the ridges, big bucks, doesn't get any better.
-
I sure hope it cools down before the season.
-
I sure hope it rains!! >:(

Unless someone beats me to it. Feel free to update it if you get in here first. :)
I have been doing the rain dance so they don't shut down the woods.
I am so pumped about this hunt as well. My brother is flying out from Washington DC to spend the week with me up there. He has never experienced high country hunting, being from Iowa and all.

any one going guieded?
Who is DIY on horses?

I'll be missing the high hunt this year... finally figuring it out and I go and get my ID residency... oh well I got lots of hunting in ID to do this year, but I'm still gonna miss the high hunt!

hoping to do this too.
(If anyone wants animal reports along the pacific crest trail my brother should be rolling through 1st week of sept)
-
We are doing a drop camp. There will be three of us. I haven't been able to go for a few years and I AM PUMPED about this year!! I can hardly wait. I've lost 100 lbs so far and should be down another 8 or 10 by the 18th of Sept. I know that sounds like alot, but I was pushin 380 lbs. For many years we did the regular season via drop camps. It's been 20 plus years since I've done the early high hunt. Not as many deer as the regular season, but quality is almost always better. Plus it is such a great time of year to be in the woods. Good luck to everyone that is taking in the high hunt!! :hello:

Spent some time on the PCT a couple weekends ago. No animals spotted but it was a beautiful day. It wasn't really a scouting mission. I will post a couple of pictures.

Do the deer like to hang out near the rocks up high :dunno: I always seem to spot them in or near rocky places during the general season?

The days are ticking down. Slowly but surely.

Im gettin way too antsy :bash:

antsy doesn't describe it

The last 3 months I've dropped 25 lbs of winter fat for this hunt.
I'm doing 8 mile training hikes with a 40 lb pack 3 times a week.
The better condition your in I figure adds a lot to the quality of the hunt.
So what are you doing? ;) :)
-
36.
Spinning classes and trips to Mount Si.
Not enough of either of them.
-
dang it u beat me to it haugenna

I want to do this hunt but also want to survive it so I have been doing as much as I can......
6-7 days a week I do 30-50 minutes on the elliptical machine and treadmill, 3 days a week I take a water aerobics class, I lift weights daily alternating muscle groups...the hubby and I either go out and walk the woods or lately go out after the bear this can be 1 hour to 8 hours depending on his schedule.....I always carry a pack and it often has about 30 lbs of crap in it....we do that 4-6 days a week usually. When it was really hot we didn't as I get heat sick way too easily so i just put in more time at the gym on the treadmill.
I also quit smoking over 4 months ago and quit drinking back in Feb..... I've ended up gaining weight...but I feel a whole lot better.....now if they would hurry up and get more classes at the gym I am stoked about taking a kickboxing class ;)
I also have a trainer who helps me tweak my routine so I don't get bored or stuck in a rut.
we were going to go out scouting this weekend but a job loss screwed that up so we stayed home and hunted bear ;)
-
runamuk,
try a spinning class. That will get the heart rate going for a good hour.

don't those use a bike? my knee does not like the stair climber or the bikes.....and our gym doesn't have any classes yet other than the water aerobics thingy that I do for the stretching element ;)
I love the elliptical machine and the treadmill when set to full incline if I walk about 4 mph is also good.....I don't run/jog due to my back I will do occasional short sprints but thats it.....

Haugenna-
My buddy and I do a nice little circut of climbs if you have a whole afternoon. Mount si, little si then hit tiger on the way back down. All three make quite a work out.
Granite mountain off exit 47 is a lung buster too if you feel like going that far up the pass.

Sounds like a nice climbing day. Do you do those with weight or just a light pack? The last time we did Si I put about 50 lbs on my back, which is what I will be carrying on the way in for the high hunt.
My wife is a workout nut and she goes with on the day hikes. Some of her girlfriends that are just as dedicated do a Triple Si. Thats one hell of a workout.
-
I usually walk with a 30 lb pack, my buddy is not a hunter so he just takes a day pack. Last week I ran the Pratt lake over to lake Malakwa lake then back down to the Pratt lake trail head. That's a good loop with good elevation gain and loss. Maybe I will bump into you sometime. I usually hike with a white shorthair pointer, if you see us say hi.
-
I will have hot blonde with me and a little kick me dog that looks like a doberman pinscher with a tail. (toy manchester terrier) Her dog not mine. I will let you know next time we hit up Si.
-
What pack will you be using for the High Hunt?
I'll be using a Mystery Ranch NICE 6500.
-
Keilty Tioga hard frame pack.
Lightweight, durable, and plenty of room.
-

Uh, Not no, but hell no! That ain't happenin here. (the drinkin anyway)
Sure wish I had time for the high hunt.

Depends on how long I go for...Arcteryx bora 80 for longer then 5 days. Badlands 2200 for less then that.

My wife and I really wanted to try that this year. Not sure really where to go but sounds like fun. Not sure we can afford to take the time this year though. :(

this is going to be my first high hunt, im planning on hunting the glacier peak. im not sure if i should head up past lake wenatchee or take off up a trail head coming off chiwawa river road. what do you guys think would be a good choice. :dunno:
-

Better bring your socialization skills if you head up chiwawa. The crowds are thick.
Only in spots... its crowded out of almost every major trailhead heading into the GPW.... I know where I would go though...

not like youll be hunting the high hunt anyway, you gotta focus on that unit 11 bull tag and idaho deer this year, are you gonna buy a wolf tag?

that will make the mountain house meals a little dry :)

So I realize this is far from best case,...but I'm having a hard time waiting all the way until October 17 for rifle season. It's darn-near crazy, but I can't get the idea of trying the high hunt out of my head. The problem is I haven't been to any of the wilderness areas ever, and I just figured out where they were tonight on the map. This is markedly different from what I'm doing to prepare for the general season--been out scouting, have ordered topo maps, and so on.
I'd like to get out the weekend of the 19th with my daughter, and the only area that's probably close enough (we're in northern Clark County) is Alpine Lakes. Now we get out a fair amount, and we're both good hikers (we're doing St. Helens next Friday), and we're willing to do a backpack hunt in the wilderness.
So the question is...does this sound crazy? Are there trailheads/parking areas along the edges where we could start from and hike into some good country? Any suggestions? Or do I just take my lumps, keep scouting, and wait for October?

If it were me ( I want to do a high hunt as well) I would want to scout it first. Some of these areas are rugged and some are heavily used by hikers. Alpine Lakes is one that I know has a lot of hikers in some areas. We've done an overnight in The Brothers steep steep terrain.... I've done a quick day trip into another area up there can't remember just now which it was ..... if you were reasonably familiar with the wilderness area I would say go for it.
-
Why not try it, just don't expect success, this is one of the hardest hunts in the state, the rewards are primarily the scenary and the fall colors, for those lucky enough to score its a bonus.
-
I would go without scouting. Just look at it as a backpacking trip, you just happen to have a rifle along just in case. Just plan on getting up as high as possible. Not many bucks in the lower or middle elevations. There are quite a few spots that you can get into with a 5 mile hike. But those 5 miles will most likely be all uphill.

Ridge u beat me to it. I should be expecting an email from you soon shouldn't I?
-
Can you road hunt this area? :dunno:
-
If you work at a body shop...
-
It is only in official wilderness areas, so there are no roads.
-
What motel can I stay at? :dunno:

I do some of my best scouting with a rifle and tag. Nothing quite like seeing what the animals are doing under normal hunting season conditions. Go have fun.

I am off to the high country solo after work coming home on Sunday night. Hope I can pinpoint a bruiser.
-
Awesome, man. Good luck and take lots of pictures (without showing too many identifiable land features, of course :)).
-
I'm getting the itch bad. Me and my hunting partner are getting the horses geared up to go. i cant wait.
-
haugenna.........where are you?
I hope your uploading a bunch of pics of BIG Bucks.

Nope no big bucks. A few smooth heads and couple degenerates and one nice forky. Long hike in and a few :tree1: up there. Somewhat disappointing. This is the first time I have been in this particular area.

Woo hooo 22 days left. No cell phones, no traffic lights, no traffic, no shedule, no bosses, no honey do's. Just eat, sleep, hunt, hike, hydrate, :whoo:and hunt some more.
The best part is sittin on the side of a slope and the sun hittin you in the face for a mid afternoon nap. Ahhhh true relaxation. Zzzzzzz

haha, or snow and wind and fog hittin you in the face... ever been on the high hunt? i'll admit it does vary, been on a few trips where i didn't need shirt if not for the bugs! but more often than not its cold, snowy/rainy and windy. at least above 6500k... very unpredictable above the tree line in mid sept. to say the least. im hopin for a skiff of snow and no moon this year! can't wait...

13 to go. 13 Loooong Daaaays.

just got a call from a friend who went up to alpine lakes to hunt and do some scouting for me for the high hunt.
seen 5 legal bucks, two 2pts, 2 bucks he never got to see, and a handful of does/fawns. he ended up missing a 4x4 with eye guards. and later that day seen the same group and took 2x3.
says one group has a 4x4 with eye guards, the 2x3 that he shot, and 2 other bucks he never got to see what they were, and a 2pt.
i know the basic area. now i just need to get my truck fixed or find someone who wants to go that has a truck.
*note* i dont know how exact his numbers are. but they sound great to me

yes archery of course. 30yd shot with a 51lb recurve. buck ran 30yds before it fell dead. something like a 1/4 mile pack out with him and his girlfriend.

1/4 mile would be nice.....I usually end up 2 days into the deal.

i say a couple...maybe 3.
it will be interesting to see.

Saw the forcast at break and they are predicting 2 FEETof snow above 6,000 feet TODAY That ought to spice things up a bit.
-
2 Feet :yike:. Hope that doesnt get them migrating out. YIKES!
-
National Weather Service forecast for the Cascades.
TODAY
RAIN AND HIGH MOUNTAIN SNOW SHOWERS LIKELY IN THE MORNING...THEN RAIN SHOWERS AND A CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS IN THE AFTERNOON. LITTLE OR NO HIGH MOUNTAIN SNOW ACCUMULATION. SNOW LEVEL 6500 FEET. HIGHS IN THE 60S. SOUTH WIND 5 TO 15 MPH IN THE AFTERNOON. CHANCE OF PRECIPITATION 80 PERCENT.
TONIGHT
CLOUDY. A CHANCE OF RAIN SHOWERS AND A SLIGHT CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS IN THE EVENING...THEN RAIN AND HIGH MOUNTAIN SNOW SHOWERS LIKELY OVERNIGHT. SNOW LEVEL 6500 FEET. LOWS IN THE LOWER TO MID 40S. GUSTS UP TO 20 MPH IN THE EVENING. CHANCE OF PRECIPITATION 50 PERCENT.
Nice to get all this rain!
-Lowedog
-
Lowedogs report sounds more likely what will happen as opposed to the news geeks.
I'm not sure what two feet would do. I think the animals would hunker and then it would melt. thats what happened to me in Montana last year. I bitched about the heat while I was up there, but not sure I'd have liked to have had that dump. :chuckle: I wouldn't have been burning my pants, thats for sure. LOL
-
The way it always goes for me is it gets like this 2 weeks before the season and gets me all pumped then by the time opening day comes it's 95 friggun degrees! :bash:
-
was up above 6500 ft last night on a little one night over nighter. . . .we got maybe a quarter inch of snow mostly it just poured rain and low clouds made for poor visibility
-
How about some photos of your bags yall will be hauling in? If you are up to it what specifics of whats in those bags? Weight?

Walking out the door :) With a heavy back pack :o

Just got home today from the mountain, had to come out early due to my partner falling and twisting his knee up. Passed on a color phase bear opening morning on the way to the canyon we were going to be hunting, slipped over the edge and spotted a group of four deer about 700 yards away with one buck in the group. Formulated a plan and started to slip down the hill when I spotted 4 orange dots on the canyon floor. :bash: They were camped down in the bottom of the canyon I was hoping to hunt and did not see them the night before while glassing. Oh well, the fishing was good!
Good luck to all you guys out there...knock something down!
