Title: Berries
Post by: Jeremy S on August 02, 2009, 02:22:18 PM
No Berries, No Sign, No Bears.  :'( The area I hunt is pretty high. It seems like the berries were thick at this time of last year. Anyone else noticing this?

I'm still glassing the areas.... I know there are bears in there. It's just nice to see a little sign, you know? I've been super busy with my new house for the last month so haven't been out to scout yet but I plan on hit my areas pretty hard until deer season when I go to the eastside.

I have only seen berries up at around 5,000 feet this early once. I shot a bear on August 11th I believe, 3 years ago and his stomach was full of them. It does look like it will be a good crop this year though, just going to be later. Will probably be 3 or 4 weeks until its decent up where I go.  :twocents:

They sure are thick over here in the Blues. In fact, my family and I have picked about 8 gallons of huckleberries over the last two weeks. The area we hit the most often is at 5,560 ft.

Unfortunately, I have another month to wait for the opener here.

Blueberries were not in much this weekend. Suspect 2 more weeks will be better. Some patches were in but I'd say on the margin of less than 5 percent were ripe. I was up about 5500 feet north of Highway 2.

+1
Berries up high aren't going to be ripe yet even with the hot summer we have had, give it a few weeks.

I agree.  Saw plenty of berries lower - where it's much harder to see the bears amongst the brush.

Yes, I should quantify my reply, "high" bear hunting up this way is 5-7000'.

4,000 ft, and lots of ripe berries, but no bears, and no bear sign at all..   :bash:
