Title: What did your dog chew up?
Post by: h2ofowlr on August 03, 2009, 07:42:35 AM: I had to take my lab to the vet as he stopped eating. The vet took an x-ray and he had swallowed a 6 oz decoy weight. They had to open him up to remove it. I had placed a nice white cone on his neck so he wouldn't chew out the stiches. I went to visit my parents and left him in there bathroom on his mat while we ran to town real quick, as there yard isn't fenced. When I got back I could hear him whining and digging at the door. When I opened the door he had nearly dug a hole threw the side of the door, chewed the counter top, crushed the door knob and dug a hole through the linoleum near the door. Man my dad was pissed. And he managed to get the cone off his head and chew it up real good. I think we were only gone a ½ hour. I spent the rest of the weekend remodeling there bathroom for them. It was one expensive weekend.

Next, I have a cousin who manages a machinery rental place and as a family member I get free rentals. I was putting in a new backyard and he loaned me a brand new backhoe, it had maybe 2 hrs on it. The next day morning I look out the window to see black and yellow pieces all over the yard, he chewed the entire seat into little pieces. I freaked not knowing how much that would cost and whether or not I would ever be able to "rent" anymore equip for him again. I called him and explained the situation and everyone in the place died laughing. Ended up costing me $100 for a new seat. This high dollar lab pup barked all the time as well and after a year and a half I gave him back to my wifes uncle.

Post by: sisu on August 03, 2009, 07:55:14 AM: h2ofowlr, welcome to my world. All my dogs as pups chewed stuff up, but labs have chewed of stuff as adults. We constantly try to monitor Gus so we don't have more vet bills or bill to pay for materials to fix stuff he has chewed up!!!!!

Post by: rasbo on August 03, 2009, 08:02:09 AM: Ive got a red heeler{rat on acid} thats eats everthing,shes been eating gravel and pooping rocks,she ate a rug,caught her running around with a turd hanging by threads about 12 inches long looked like she was trooling. :dunno:

Post by: CP on August 03, 2009, 08:11:30 AM: Mine would chew on lamp cords when she was a pup. There is a natural consequence to chewing electrical cords but it took a surprisingly long time for her to learn not to.

Nothing like going out to clean up the piles in your yard, only to find Barbie staring back at you from one of them.

Crayons make for a creepy sort of art, but 150 yds of fishing line just plain sucks.

A coffee can half full of cigarette butts didn't even make it to the other end. Puked up in the kitchen. He did keep down a lit cigar once though.

Started at the back window and then finished the job out of frustration. (We had left him in the car to spend the morning in goose blinds and he was too much of a spaz to take along!)

My current Lab chewed the toe off my Tony Lama cowboy boots when he was a puppy. That was the end of them! Glad they were a gift, if I knew what they had cost I'd have probably killed him!

Never had a problem with adult Labs chewing. The GSP's yes, but after the Lab's finished being puppies, it stopped. My Bulldogs don't chew... they try to swallow crazy stupid things, but chewing isn't an issue!

Back before I was married I was "entertaining" a young gal and had "Finished up". I removed the "protective device" and attempted to throw it into the wastebasket in the corner. I was unaware that my lab was sitting at the base of the bed and just as I released it I hear this "WOMP" he swallowed it before I could pry his mouth open :yike: I was worried that it would back him up inside and I would have to explain how it got there to the Vet. :chuckle: Never did find it.

hmmm wonder if his poop was bagged up when it hit the lawn... :dunno: patent idea

And for the record Rasbo - yes it does hit the lawn all bagged up, but the problem is they can't pass the last little bit, so you get to help them after they are done scooting across the yard trying to shake it loose. I got the honor of pulling with my chubby little fingers a nylon 1/2 full of poo, because the last few inches wouldn't let go on its own. He was about 5 months old at the time.

He has eaten 2 pairs of my leather dress shoes. One was repairable the other was not.
He has eaten several pairs of flip flops.
He has eaten a pair of the neighbor kids crocs
he has eaten a brand new sweater of my wifes
He likes to eat the Kong toys they sell for chewing dogs, but he some how gets them down into little pieces.
golf balls
base balls
beach balls
pine cones by the dozen
house insulation
handles off my wheel barrow
He now likes to snatch graham crackers out of our 18 month old son's hands

He is almost 2 years old now and has mellowed out quite significantly in the last few months. You still have to watch him though.

She is 2 1/2 and shows no signs of slowing down. What hasn't she ate? Its always fun picking up the poop, we like to call it mystery poo. You never know what you are going to find. The best advice is leave nothing where they can get to it. If its something you cherish or is important/ expensive and you leave it where they can get it its not their fault, you left it there. Boo has done walls, base boards, clothes, shoes, my pay checks, calls, our log furniture, fishing gear, food, toilet paper (whole rolls), toys, phones and her favorite is newspaper. My wife is the one to blame for that because when she was a pup the Mrs. thought it was cute to let Boo tear up the paper now we don't get a paper! :chuckle: I have had to call poison control a dozen times on her.

By the time they were 5 months old they were huge, with a mouth that could swallow a basketball whole. Nothing on the table or counters was safe from their reach. One of them snatched a 4 pound ribeye off the counter when my back was turned and in one gulp it was gone, no chewing just swallowing.

One day they ripped the screen off an open window, jumped through the window into the house and played tug-o-war with my couch; ripping it apart and dragging it up a flight of stairs. They had to go. Nice dogs, just too much dog for suburban life.

Post by: h2ofowlr on August 04, 2009, 05:29:48 PM: I had to finally confine my dog to a dog run. It is plenty big enough for him, but he was on a destructive course. Dug holes all over the back yard. Chewed off every sprinkler head at least once. Chewed the rails on the deck. Ripped out all of my wives bushes out of the ground along with the new Japaneese Maple, chewed the handles off to the wheel barrel, several handles off shovels, most of the kids toys that were left in the sand box. About a dozen decoys and I still wonder why I have kept him. Great dog as long as you give it full attention. Killer hunting dog out in the field.

My yellow lab, Bubba, he's a big boy. 110lbs at his prime, he's old now so he's down to about 95. Anyway, he has a ball fetish. (To put it mildly!)

I pulled up to my brother's place once and let him out of the truck. He took off like a shot across the yard! I looked up expecting to see a pheasant or a coon or something... not hardly! There sat one of those beach ball sized bouncy balls belonging to one of my little nieces/nephews.

Well, there it stood for a second anyway! Hilarious tackle, followed by a big explosion, and a confused dog holding a rubber rag in his mouth!

I remember going back to BC's house after hunting and walking thought the door to find that Diesel ripped apart the house. We looked at each other and decided to go get a burger.

My Pitbull on the other hand doesn't eat or chew anything... he just steals it for the Shepherd to eat.

All the Labs, without exception are chewers!! All good dogs, but chewers.
Had a friend that had a Bassett Hound that got ahold of one of his wife's toy's when they went to the airport to get the wifes parents.
When they got back home and the in-laws walked through the front door, the dog was chewing on said toy in the middle of the front room!!!! :chuckle:

He took him to the vet and he swallowed 20+ feet of string off the blinds in there house. They had to open the pooch up. What toped this off is that he had called two days ago to complain about how his dog had destroyed several window blinds in the house. :hunter:

2 couches - one leather, one upholstery
1 love seat - found rottie with large piece of fluff in her mouth - with a very excited and proud look of "LOOK what I've done" when we returned home. The rotties houesemate - our dumb lab mix dug craters to China - we could have hidden Jimmy Hoffa and the rest of ALL union members in our back yard.

Possessed dog - we call him Lucifer - some called him Rusty - but we will NEVER get another Brittney as long as we live: Lucifer tried to eat his way out of the house via the dryer vent, ate large swathes of roll out vinyl flooring. Ate several door jam trims, broke his way out of 3 crates.

Disembowlment of several stuffed animals to the point where I think we had more animal stuffing than dog fur around the house.

But we love them Despite that.

All in all - they destoy LESS things than the kids do.

When she was really small she would chew on the siding of the house.

Laptop cord $110 for a new one ouch

Brand new Motorola walkie talkie $59 for the set. Came one day UPS set them in the charger on the floor in the living room, did not notice untill later that she took one into the yard and chewed it up.

They say a new puppy on average does $2500.00 in damage growing up.

Previous lab? Not so great..... TV remote, picture frames, leather couch, shoes, license plate, eye glasses, lots of food from counters. Funniest was he and his co-conspirator, a shepherd mutt, chewed through a half-rack of MGD once when we had gone to the store. We came home and they were both passed out on the living room floor with a scattering of now-empty cans with canine punctures in the sides.

Get a Chesapeake. I love my lab, but there are so many health issues with labs now a days because of indiscriminate breeding I'll be getting a Chesapeake next time around.

We have had little things like kid's toys left out, a flip flop .... that's all I can really think of but, we crate ours when they can't be watched. The cost of a $65. crate sure beats the cost of the stuff they could chew up.

We have a pup who did swallow a rock while outside...that wasn't cheap!!

Post by: Elliott on September 07, 2009, 03:22:56 PM: several pairs of shoes, some that were brand new, whore twice and then found them in the back yard... now come to think of it, i think my pup got every single pair of shoe that i own, still wear half of them too, flip flops seemed to be his favorites, didnt matter whos they were he just grabbed one of them took it into the back yard and chewed the straps off of them and then he was pretty much done. One time he got into a box of computer hardware, hard drives, wifi routers, programs cds, he only chewed the packaging, left the hard stuff alone. hes been good lately but today he just learned that he can jump over the fence if he wants to :yike: :yike: hope he forgot it already

I didn't realize they were aggressive chewers. This thing tears through stuffed toys like they punched his momma.

Post by: Gutpile on October 06, 2009, 06:34:56 AM: Mine chewed the handles of of my wheelbarrow, the plastic handles off of shovels (2), The pull handle from my lawn mower, 4 or 5 hoses, countless toys, every bed I ever got him, garbage bags (he loved diapers - YUM), a kiddie pool, trees, firewood, shoes, boots. The worst was when a friend put his flat bed in my garage for a 3 day bus. trip. He got under it and ate all of the wiring under the bed. I was just beside myself. That S.O.B. cost me a lot of money the first 5 years of his life. I wanted to kill him on several occasions. He chewed absolutely everything for the first 4-5 years. Our back yard was nothing but lawn. No toys, shrubs, sprinklers, nothing or he'd destroy it. :bash: :bash:

Our one Dachshund likes to find the foam ear plugs that are in my pants pockets from work. When you walk around the back yard, you see little turds with ear plugs the same size as them. :chuckle:

The thing that urks me the most is the antique furniture that her great grandma bought and has been passed down through the family. Beautiful cherry wood that now is worthless because all of the legs have chew marks. My wife seems to think it will be easy to replace the legs but boy is she in for a surprise.

My rott when she was a youngster got into the recycling in the garage and ate 2 aluminum pop cans! I searched the garage for hours looking for reminence but all I could find was the top. She never had any problems because of it, and I never saw it come out in her poop either.

My lab has only chewed a few items. The power cord to my dads chop saw, the ground wire from the Directv antenna, and some other small things. My big problem with her is digging. If I ever leave her outside with a ball or a kong she digs giant holes. I don't think she does it on purpose she just pounces on the ball and makes a divet and continues to put the ball in the same exact spot everytime.

I stitched him up and put him in the back seat of the truck and continued to hunt with a freind and his dog. My male apparently felt that he was still in the game so he chose to eat a portion of my headliner in the back seat of my P/U truck.

Between the vet bills and the damage bills from that season. I figured it cost me an average of $55.00 per quail. OUCH :bash: :bash: :bash:

awhile back a neighbor i sold a puppy to called us over because something was wrong with their dog. The was laying on the ground foaming out the mouth. we opened her mouth and her toungue was burnt in half. we found the cord right next to her after that. she ended up being alright. just had a funny shaped toungue lol

I watched the little critter trying to reach around and bite the dog as he was carrying it back. I had to take care of it quickly and make sure I didn't have to stich up the dogs face. Man those things have some long teeth.

When I got the remote, it was toast. I had to find the spare to get the alarm shut off. That will be over a $100 to fix. Damn.

She will peel a tennis ball, destroy almost any toy or stick you give her. I guess we will count ourselves lucky. I don't count crayons and other little things the kids leave laying around, but I do find most of it.

Then she figured out that she could pull the stalks up and shred them, you should have seen our yard. She recently discovered she likes potatoes as well luckily they are all dug now and stored for winter. She just turned one year old some I'm hopeful the chewing will slow down soon.

My son finally grabs it and pulls it and comes out all wet and yucky it was 1/2 way in his stomach I'm sure.

I say "where's the other one?"

We found it on the living room floor about 6 hours later in a steaming pile that included the dogs dinner!!
