I was fortunate to meet a new friend and share in his success on an incredible bear in the lewis river unit. He had an opportunity at this same bear in the same clear cut last year but was unable to connect. (I think he just wanted the bear bigger and older). He did'nt waste any time redeeming himself. He made a perfect shot at 286 yards with his .270 and hand loads. We estimated him 300 lbs or better. He was'nt but half way up to his treestand when he saw the bruin already feeding into the cut around 7 pm. Thanks Jim for the memories, thanks ILV2HNT for the invite to bear camp. We'll be sharing the same camp together again come archery elk season. Hopefully Jim will check out this site and join our forums. I'll try to post some more pics when I get some.

True story, not a good photo for this site and it's reputation. It would be best if we keep our reputations beyond reproach.
-
I LOOKED EVEN CLOSER AT THE PHOTO ITS A BEAR BAIT WITH A BEAR ON THE FRONT GO FIGURE NOT GOOD FOR THIS SITE AT ALL
HOPE WDFW DONT SEE THAT HE`S DONE
-
I can't see pics at work. If its true, then I HOPE WE LEAVE it on here and they DO SEE IT. ITS POACHING! I hope someone turns them in. I hope they lose their trophy. Again, I can't see the picture to pass any sort of judgement.
-
I have copies of the picture so it can't get too lost. Even if it wasn't his bait, it is still illegal. I can't believe he was naive enough to include them in the picture.
-
I didnt notice the bags before. They do appear to have a bear on them. Admin needs to lock the poster out so he cant delete the picture until this is resolved. Very sad if this is poaching.
-
This is the best I could do for getting it cleaned up. Anyone recognize this?
-
those are probably horses, senior horse feed is used alot
-
I was hoping it was salt for the hide but I dont know. But bags of salt could be bait as well. Sure looks like a picture of a bear on that bag.
-
That would be a lot of salt...
-
When I magnify the picture and fiddle with the contrast, it looked like a horse and a cow on the bag. I am no expert, but it could be grain for the horses, if they packed in. :dunno:
-
Yea I see a cow and a horse now also.
-
a gave it a try, may not be any better but another view
-

Looks like a horse and a cow to me. :dunno: Maybe instead of throwing stones, we should ask the guy what the bags were.
-
Not throwing stones unless he is guilty of something bad. I can't see any pics so couldn't tell you. I can tell you that it doesn't matter if it is a Cow or a Horse. Thats a number one feed for bear. It could be two bags of dogfood. :dunno:
-
I am almost positive they aren't game bags though.
-
Actually, feeding horses cattle feed can poisin your horse. If it is hoese and cow on the bag it is a special blend.
-
HE`S -UCKING BAITING WDFW IS ON ALERT IT`S BS THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL THATS FOR HIS HORSES BEARS LOVE GRAIN
IT WILL BE VERY HARD TO GET OUT OF THIS SITUATION BUT THE DUMB -UCKER TOOK A PICK WITH FEED IN THE BACK GROUND HE`S BAITING
100000000000000000 PERCENT I HOPE HUNTING WASH BLACK BALLS THIS GUY AND TURNS HIM IN..IM ALL FOR IT IM SOOO GLAD I POINTED THIS OUT
LETS NOT BACK DOWN WHATS RIGHT IS RIGHT WHATS WRONG IS WRONG THIS IS WRONG..........................
-
Before anybody starts flaming away, this is a picture of an aquantance of a Hunting-Washington Member, not an actual member. Hopefully, Elkburger can shed some light on this. If not, we may never hear the full story.
-
NO IT JUST NOT RIGHT OK
-
HE SHOULD BE IN JAIL FOR POACHING
-
Looks like salt bags of this brand http://www.americanstockman.com/
Seems pretty incriminating that bait was involved. :bdid:
-
You nailed it. Wonder what the salt was for?

I agree you nailed the product.
-

Not necessarily salt, but for sure a mineral nutrient or supplement of some kind. We all know that animals and game animals love salt. It is still unknown why it is there and why they took a picture of it.
-
From the 2 animals on the bag and that website's product page it appears to be one of the bags of salt. I guess I'd give them the benefit of the doubt and say it might be for salting the hide. They do appear unopened.
-
They are innocent until proven guilty.
This does however serve as an example to how things can be construed by the words and pictures you chose to use.

I would like to know who packs in a 110lbs of salt for a hide, but I do agree with innocent until proven guilty
-
I'll weigh in on some of this.
First and foremost I do not personally condone any illegal baiting activities in the forum. Known illegal pictures and stories of illegal activities will be deleted. You may be reported to the authorities.
As to the picture and story on the bear... I am not a police officer and I was not there when the bear was harvested. I cannot comment on what is inside the photo one way or another and why it was there. I do believe that people are innocent until proven guilty. This might be a lesson for both sides - the bear hunter, the story teller and the critics in the end. Time will tell. Let's hope that nothing ocurred which was illegal. I will personally assume innocence at this moment in time. The law is upheld by the game wardens in this state and the court systems. Not by me.
I do have an inherent responsibility to remove anything which is illegal and which I believe is damaging to the sport. I am fully aware of that.
-
Hard to figure why someone would bait a bear and then be that much of a dumb A@# to take a picture of the bait............but then again we have all seen the dumb criminal show's on TV....I hope it was just for the hide but at the very least someone has some explaining to do.
-
"SHAME ON YOU........"
Yes, shame on you for breaking the law IF you are guilty.
"IM NOT VERY IMPRESSED AT ALL TRY TO KILL A BEAR WITH OUT BAIT"
There was a time when baiting bears was legal in this state and many people, including myself, legally participated and enjoyed the sport. I'm still a little bitter that this state passed an initiative in 1996 to ban bear baiting. I don't think anyone who legally participated in bear baiting prior to 1996 was trying to impress anyone. They simply enjoyed that form of bear hunting.
-
I'm very curious as to why so many people are assuming that the individual in the picture was involved in baiting for bear.
This was a bear camp as stated in the text of the story.
Possibly more than just one hunter?
That means possibly more than just one bear could be harvested.
Possibly more than just one hide that needs to be salted?
:twocents:
-
i agree....its just hard to believe that a *censored* would put a pic of himself with bait bags behind him.
I say salt for the hide.
:twocents:
-
I wonder who would use salt with other minerals in it to salt a hide. :bdid:
-
presuming it is for salting the hide isn't even a consideration for me. If you saw the same bags at a person's house would you think it was going to be used for salting an icy sidewalk? The bags specifically contain nutritional supplements. I am not saying it was being used as bait just saying it was not likely to be used for anything other than ingestion by some mammal. Feed is too expensive these days in my opinion.
-
I think most of us were trying to figure out what the bags were. I think that shows that we really dont want to believe that they were baiting. Opening day was very hot and they had a few guys in their camp. It is very possible they brought the salt for the hide or hides if they were successful. I think the fact that they were not concerned about the bags in the picture might also show no illegal intent. :dunno: I think we all hope they were not breaking the law.
-
I just looked through American Stockman's products and not all of their salt have minerals added. I could see going to the feed store and grabbing a couple bags of salt for hides. :dunno:
-
Maybe they had horses in camp? Maybe they used the bags to transport something else to camp....maybe a heck of alot of different reasons for those bags to be in camp. Maybe we all shouldn't rush to judgement so quickly? Also Baiting, although illegal in this state, is a HONORABLE way to harvest a bear, so ease up on the "IM NOT VERY IMPRESSED AT ALL TRY TO KILL A BEAR WITH OUT BAIT SHAME ON YOU" Sheesh
-
i agree, give the guy a chance to explain why they were there, before accusing him of anything.....but who knows how long that will take????
-
I read the post when it first came up and didn't even notice the bags til it was pointed out. I'd definitley like more details, outdoorsman work on the honor code, it's our ethics that set us apart from those who break the law. If we are going to claim the highground, which is ours and we should, we have to help to hold those accountable for their actions.
More details please elkburger!
-
First off, I apologize for posting a picture with content that can be so easily be misconstrued. I too did'nt notice the bags in the pic's. I certainly do not want to destroy the reputation of this site, in fact I refer the site to many folks as a great resource and I'll continue to do so, despite some of its boisterous members. The bags were mineral salt intended for salting a trail cam spot in scouting elk. This is completly legal. Many folks do it but it takes a while to dissolve into the ground. Salt blocks or licks are also commonly used. Since there was no illegal activity going on, we had nothing to hide. If there are still some doubts on the subject, please contact the WDFG region 5 office @ (360)696-6211. Thank you to those members who gave this issue 'benefit of the doubt'.
-
Thanks Elkburger for clearing that up. It is appreciated by all of us.
-
Once again to your firend, congrats on a nice bear!
-
Thanks Guys
-
Appreciate the clarification, besides if your going to bait gummy bears work better :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
Elkburger,
Thanks for clarifying and I apologize to you and your buddy. I jumped the gun and without full knowledge I came to my own conclusion and was wrong. Again, I'm :sry:.
BTW Nice bear!
-
I think WASHBCBOOK owes an apology, he was already hanging the rope from the tree.
I think i agree.
-
This is locked. If you don't have any proof of illegal activities then you should consider being respectful about what you say. Especially if you were not there. Otherwise talk to the game wardens. Oh and salt can be considered bait so be careful out there and think about what you are doing.
